Glenties Notes on January 31st, 2002

The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Saturday 19th January 2002 of Mamie Sweeney, Gortnasillagh, Glenties. Her remains were brought home later that day and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Monday. Fr. Patrick Prendergast assisted by Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir and Fr. Neilie Boyle, Dungloe celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by Martina O’Donnell and Antoinette Sweeney. Tony O’Donnell, Amanda, Sean, and Cornelius Sweeney read Prayers of the Faithful. The Gifts were brought to the Altar by Liam and Amanda Sweeney, all grandchildren of Mamie’s. Music and singing was by the Loughlin family. Burial took place in the New Cemetery. Mamie is survived by sons, William and Jimmy, Gortnasillagh, Martin, Galway, daughter Mary K. O’Donnell, Dungloe, sister, Bridie Heron, Letterilly, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband, Cornelius predeceased Mamie and her grandson, Conor Sweeney died last November.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Anne Doherty, Mill Road, Glenties on the death of her mother, Sarah Mc Cole, Dungloe who died in Dungloe Hospital on Thursday 24th January 2002.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Margaret Quinn, Doonan Court, Donegal Town and formerly of Fintown and Meenmore, Dungloe, who died recently in Dublin.

Congratulations to John Francis and Patricia O’Donnell, Letterkenny on the birth of their second child, a baby brother for Dáire. John F. is a son of John and Aggie O’Donnell, Ard Patrick, Glenties and Patricia (nee Hanlon)is from Lettermacaward.

Congratulations to John A. Glynn who recently graduated from the University of Westminster with a Masters Degree in Clinical Chemistry. John is a son of Michael and Rosemary Glynn, Narin Road, and grandson of Maggie and the late Bill Glynn, Ard Patrick, Glenties and is currently working as a Senior Biomedical Scientist at Mayday Hospital, Croydon.

Congratulations to St. Columba’s Comprehensive School U/14 team who won the quarter-final of the Ulster Schools Competition last Wednesday. They beat Kilkeel, Co. Down at the Derrylaughlin GAA pitch at Washing Bay near Dungannon to secure their place in the semi-final.

Congratulations to Dave Mulhern, teacher at St. Columba’s Comprehensive School Glenties who was recently presented with the Handballer of theYear Award.

Congratulations to Sharon Foley, Lifford who recently won the Donegal Athlete of the Year Award at the Sport Star ceremony in the Silver Tassie, Letterkenny. Sharon is a daughter of Mary and Alan Foley, Lifford and granddaughter of the late Dinny and Ellie Doherty, Ard Patrick, Glenties.

Congratulations to Mary Mc Loone, Cleengort who added to her collection of medals when she won silver at the Scottish Senior Indoor Championships in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow.

Congratulations to Patsy Mc Gonagle who was selected as Donegal Person of the Year 2001. Patsy taught for some years in the Comprehensive School in Glenties.

Glenties Notes on January 24th 2002

Terence O’Donnell and Catherine Loupy were married in S.M.A. Church Blackpool, Cork on Saturday 5th January 2002. The bride’s sister, Mary was bridesmaid and the groom’s brother, Aidan was bestman. The reception was held in the Maryborough Hotel, Douglas and the honeymoon was spent in Rome. Terence is a son of Patrick and Mary O’ Donnell, Gortnasillagh, Glenties and the bride is from Screen, Co. Westmeath.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of the following: Mamie Sweeney, Gortnasillagh who died on Saturday 19th, Peggy Conwell, Strabane (nee Mc Devitt, Greenan’s, Glenties) who also died on Saturday, Patrick Ward, Baltipatrick, who died on Sunday, Paddy Mc Gill, Glenleighan, Fintown, who died on Sunday and Joseph Herron, formerly of Glenamohill, Fintown, who died recently in Scotland.

Congratulations to Margaret Mc Gill, and Brian Gildea, who got engaged recently. Margaret is a daughter of Jimmy and Bella Mc Gill, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties and Brian is a son of Tony (formerly Straboy, Glenties) and Kathleen (nee Keeney, Drimnacrosh) Gildea, Surrey, England.

Congratulations to Louise and Anthony Byrne, Glen Road, Glenties on the birth on Monday 7th January 2002, of their third child, a baby brother for Patrick and Tony.

The death took place early on Saturday 12th January 2002 in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin of Ann Margaret Trimble, Maas, Glenties. Her remains were brought home later that day and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Monday morning. Fr. Prendergast assisted by Fr. Ó Gallachóir and Fr. Cuffe, Chaplin at St. Vincent’s Hospital, celebrated Requiem Mass. Her brothers and sisters did the Readings and brought the Gifts to the Altar and two cousins read Prayers of the Faithful. Burial took place in the New Cemetery. The whole community was shocked, first at the news of Ann Margaret’s sudden serious illness just a week ago and then saddened at the news of her death. She had worked as a nurse in St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin after finishing her training and her twenty third birthday was on Sunday 13th the day after she died. Ann Margaret was a daughter of Patsy and Margaret Trimble, Maas and is survived by her parents, four sisters and four brothers, grandmother, aunts, cousins, other relatives and friends. Her other grandmother, Mary Kennedy lived for several years at Mill Road, Glenties.

Glenties Notes on January 11th 2002

The death took place peacefully, at his home on Thursday 27th December 2001 of Charlie Boyle, Narin Road and formerly of Ardconnell. Glenties. His remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday morning. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir, Glenties assisted by Fr. Philip Daly, Kilclooney celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings, Prayers of the Faithful, carrying of the Gifts were by Charlie’s grandchildren, Anton and Deirdre Dooley, Cathal and Emma Boyle, Roisin Ana Ní Chartaigh, Neil Charlie Boyle, Caroline Bonner, John Boyle, Saoirse Mac Cartaigh, Nollaig Ní Chartaigh, Pauric and Mairead Mc Gill. Music and singing was by Thomas Donahue, Pat O’ Donnell, Anne Mc Dwyer and Amanda Mc Guigan. Burial took place in the New Cemetery. Charlie is survived by his wife, Mary, sons, James, Glenties, Charlie, Dublin, daughters, Lena Dooley, Glenties, Mary Ní Chartaigh, Portnoo, Rose Boyle, Burtonport, Bernadette Mc Gill, Ardara, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His son Neil, brothers, Barney, Paddy and Cornelius, sisters, Helena, Rosie, Mary, Bridget Ann, Aggie and Cathy predeceased him. Charlie was ninety-two years old and was a native of Loughfad.

The death took place in Killybegs Hospital on Wednesday 2nd January 2002 of Rosha Boyle (nee Gildea), Ard Patrick, Glenties. Her remains came to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Thursday evening. Fr. Patrick Prendergast P.P. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass on Friday morning. Music was by Sr. Immaculata on the organ. Burial took place in the New Cemetery.

Sincere sympathy is extended to her two brothers, Francie, Ard Patrick, Glenties and Peter, England, cousins other relatives and many friends. Her husband Peter, sisters Maureen Ward, Bridie Gildea, brothers James and Paddy predeceased her.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Teresa Melly, Church Road, Glenties on the death of her aunt, Nellie Given, Hillhead, Ardara which took place on Christmas morning.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Josie Mc Devitt, Meenavale, Glenties on the death of his sister, Annie which took place in Dublin last week. Her remains were brought to The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh and burial took place in Edeninfagh Cemetery on Saturday 5th January 2002.

Congratulations to John and Maggie Timoney, The Rock, Glenties, who celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary recently.

Congratulations to Maria and Billy Macinnis, London on the birth recently of their second child, a little sister for Ellie. Maria is a daughter of James and Mary Gallagher, Glen Road, Glenties.

Glenties got engaged to Martin Bennett, Ardara, Eddie Gallagher, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties got engaged to Stephanie O’Connell, Doohary, John Brown, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, Glenties got engaged to Patricia Mc Cabe, Binbane and Philomena Gallagher, The Mines, Glenties got engaged to Austin Brady from Naas, Co. Kildare.

Congratulations to Mary and Hughie Gallagher, Curraghmone, Ballybofey, who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Saturday last 29th December. Mary, nee Boyle is from Glen Road Glenties.

Congratulations to Garda Angeline Ashworth, daughter of Noel and Bridie Conefry, Mill Road, Glenties who was promoted Sergeant to Cabinteely, Dublin.

Congratulations also to Chief Supt. Catherine Clancy, daughter of Kitty (nee Mc Devitt, Glenties) and the late Furzie Clancy, who has been appointed to take over at the head of Donegal Division. Early last year when she was promoted to the rank of Chief Supt. she became the first female in the history of the state to achieve the position. The appointment to Donegal will be her first time in charge of a division.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Mary Boyle, Narin Road, Glenties on the death of her husband, Charlie, which took place on Thursday 27th December and to all the family.

His remains came to his home later that day and were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday morning. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by Joe’s niece and nephew, Mary Mc Gettigan and James Breslin. Music and singing was by Sr. Immaculata on the organ, Siobhan Mc Elhinney on tin whistle, Thomas Donahue on guitar and Amanda Mc Guigan. Burial took place in the New Cemetery. Joe is survived by his daughter, Rita, Ard Patrick, Glenties, sons, Joseph and Kenneth, England, brothers, Ally, Ardconnell, Francie, Kilraine, Glenties, sisters, Nellie and Maggie, England, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His wife Mary predeceased him nineteen years ago, his son Jamsie four years ago on the 10th January and his sister Mary Noone died in England on the 26th March last year. His brothers, James, Packie, Jack, Tommy, Den, and Henry also predeceased him.
