Glenties Notes on Feburary 22th 2002

The death took place suddenly on Friday 8th February 2002 of James Melly, Strasallagh, Glenties. His remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Sunday morning. Fr. Prendergast P.P. Glenties assisted by Fr. Francis Mc Loone, Adm. St. Eunan’s Cathedral, Letterkenny celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by his son-in-law Patrick Patton, and niece, Mary Melly. Anne Manley, Cathal Faulkner and Catriona Carr read Prayers of the faithful. Music and singing was by the local church choir. Burial took place in the New Cemetery. James is survived by his wife, Bried, Strasallagh, daughter, Anne, Letterkenny, sister, Sarah, New York, son-in-law, Patrick Patton, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His brothers, Francie and Eamonn and sister Madge Mc Cready predeceased him.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Mary Claire O’ Donnell, Co-op. Glenties on the death of her brother, Liam O’ Donnell, Letterkenny and formerly Clogher, Clooney, which took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Monday 11th February 2002.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Bridie Gallagher, Meenahalla, Genties, on the death of her father Frank Brennan, who died in Scotland on Saturday 9th February 2002.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives of Frank Quinn, formerly Daraghan, Fintown, who died recently in Belfast.

On Saturday 9th February 2002 Elizabeth Mannering and Florian Fischer were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties. Fr. Patrick Predergast P.P. officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Elizabeth is a daughter of Tony and Margaret Mannering, Meenanall, Glenties and Florian is a son of Wolfgang and Margit Fischer, Ardun, Glenties. Her father gave the bride away and her sisters, Rose, Patricia and Julie Mannering were bridesmaids. Daniel O’Brien, friend of the groom was bestman and Toby and Wolfgang Fischer were groomsmen. Mary Mannering was flowergirl and Oliver Mannering and John and Alexander Fischer were pageboys. Readings were by Margaret Mannering, mother of the bride and Margit Fischer, mother of the groom. Anne Mannering and Yvonne Fischer read Prayers of the Faithful and Emma Quigley and Rosanna Brozzi brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in the Lake House Hotel, Clooney, Portnoo.

Congratulations to Gary O’Donnell, Glenties and Caroline Bonner, Doochary, who were married in Fintown on Saturday last.

Congratulations to Mary and Bartley Doran on the birth recently of their first child, a baby boy. Mary is a daughter of Peadar and Kathleen Molloy, Lacklea, Greenans, Glenties.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife, daughter, sister and other relatives and friends of James Melly, Strasallagh, Glenties, who died suddenly on Friday last.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Mary Anne Cannon Portnoo who died last week. Mary Anne was formerly Gallagher from Knockletragh.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Peter Gallagher who died in England recently. Peter’s father, Michael is from Meenahalla, Glenties.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of John Boyle formerly of Derryloughan, Glenties, who died in the Bahamas.

The new Glenties web site is currently under development so if anyone has any suggestions about what should or should not be included in the site please let us know, if anyone has any stories about the history of the town or characters past or present, send them on to us and hopefully we will use them.
