Glenties Notes on September 28th 2002

The death took place, suddenly in London on Monday 9th September 2002 of Josephine Bonner, formerly of Mully, Glenties. Her remains were brought to her parents, Paddy Joe and Peggy Molloy’s home on Saturday 14th and to The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Sunday. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties, Fr. Denis Quinn P.P. Falcarragh and Fr. Francis Mc Loone Adm. Letterkenny concelebrated Requiem Mass. Burial took place in the New Graveyard, Glenties where her baby son, Jonathan is buried. Josephine is survived by her husband, John, sons, Mark and Shawn, parents, Paddy Joe and Peggy, brothers, Patrick and Martin, Fintown, Hughie, Station Road, John, Ardconnell, Cormac, Mill Road, Glenties, sisters, Margaret Flannery, Lr. Mully, Glenties, Geraldine Harkin, and Sadie Mitchell, London, mother-in-law, Maggie Bonner, Straboy, Glenties, sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

On Tuesday 17th September 2002 the death took place peacefully at her home of Mary Boyle, Narin Road and formerly of Ardconnell, Glenties. Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Thursday afternoon. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties, assisted by a family friend, Fr. Maurice Mc Gill, celebrated Requiem Mass at 1.30p.m. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Mary is survived by sons, James, Glenties, Charlie, Dublin, daughters, Lena Dooley, Glenties, Mary Ní Chartaigh, Portnoo, Rose Boyle, Burtonport, Bernadette Mc Gill, Ardara, sisters, Bridget Mc Groarty, Birmingham, Teresa Breslin, Ardara, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband, Charlie predeceased her on December 27th last year and her son Neil some years ago. Her brothers, Leo, James, Charlie, Peter and John Watters, sisters Annie Nolan and Rosie Watters also predeceased her.

The death took place on Monday 16th September 2002 on his way to Letterkenny hospital of Cormac Quinn (Hughie), Mully, Glenties. His remains were brought home on Tuesday and to The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Thursday. Fr. Denis Quinn P.P. Falcarragh assisted by Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Graveyard. Cormac is survived by his wife, Sarah, sons, John and Hughie, Mully, daughters, Bridgeen Gallagher, Ard Patrick, Glenties, Marion Carr, Dungloe, Bernadette Bonner, Glenfin, sisters, Kitty Hughes, Dungannon, Eileen Quinn, Wales, grandchildren, sons and daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His sisters, Hannah, Annie, Mary Bridget, Madge, Maggie, Rosie and a baby brother, John, predeceased him.

Glenties Church of Ireland will be one hundred and fifty years old this year. To celebrate this occasion a special service will be held in the Church on Wednesday 9th October at 8.00p.m. The new Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, The Right Reverend Kenneth Good will be the special Preacher on the day. Everyone will be very welcome.

Tina Campbell and John Breslin were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 14th September 2002. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Tina is a daughter of Martin (from Ardara) and the late Bridget Campbell, Monaghan and John is a son of Teague and Eileen Breslin, Ardara. Her father gave the bride away and her cousin; Joanne Mc Loone was bridesmaid. John’s brother, Patrick was bestman. Niamh Campbell, niece of the bride and Aoife Breslin, niece of the groom, were flowergirls and Oisin Campbell, nephew of the bride was pageboy. Readings were by Glen Campbell, brother of the bride and Mary Breslin, sister of the groom. James and Roisin Mc Loone, cousins of the bride and Ellen Jane Breslin, sister of the groom read Prayers of the Faithful. The Gifts were brought to the Altar by the bride’s aunt, Mena Mc Loone and Eileen Breslin, mother of the groom. The reception was held in The Lake House Hotel, Clooney, Portnoo and the honeymoon was abroad.

Congratulations to Daniel Mc Loone, Maas, Glenties and Caroline Mc Kinney who were married in Buncrana on Thursday 19th.

Congratulations to Breid and Joe Gavigan, Narin Road, Glenties on the birth in Letterkenny Hospital last week, of their second child, a baby brother for Kevin.

Local Marathon Man, Michael Fitzgerald, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, Glenties is busy training for the New York Marathon on the 3rd November, which he will be running in aid of Donegal Hospice. He needs your help to make it worth while. Sponsorship cards are in the business premises so if you see one please give Michael and Donegal Hospice your support.

Glenties Notes on September 19th 2002

There was a big crowd about town again this year for the Harvest Fair Festival, especially on Thursday, the Harvest Fair Day and on Sunday for the Float and Band Parade and other events, which were taking place. Stalls of all kinds, Clothes, Shoes, Toys and Tools etc. lined the street on both sides on the Harvest Fair Day, from out past the Church on the Mill Road, up the Glen Road, out past the Garage on the Station Road and down to Ard Patrick on the Narin Road. There were also fortune-tellers, games to play, and prizes to be won, bouncing castles, Mc Gurk’s Amusements and loads of other things to do. We had a beautiful day for the Harvest Fair and the weather was great throughout the festival.

Congratulations to Alan Kee, Butcher, who won the prize for the best float.

Congratulations to Crona Regan, representing Nighthawks Restaurant who was selected as the Glenties Harvest Festival Queen 2002 at a dance in the Highlands Hotel on Sunday night. Crona is a daughter of Martin and Mary Regan, Mill Road, Glenties. Congratulations to Laura Farren who was selected as Teen Queen in the Limelight on Friday night. Laura is a daughter of Johnny and Bernadette Farren (nee Cunningham), The Rock, Glenties.

The next big weekend in Glenties will be the Fiddlers at the beginning of October. Musicians from all over the country and beyond will be converging on the town and if you are a traditional music fan this is the place to be that weekend.

On the weekend of 25th, 26th and 27th October, Tirchonnaill Gaels GAA Club in London will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the founding of their club, which was a home from home for many Donegal people over the years. The official opening of Tirchonnaill Park will also take place that weekend. Anyone requiring further information contact Frank Mc Swiggan at 075-51698.

The marriage of Joanne O’Dwyer and Burt Kerins took place in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday 6th September 2002. Fr. Pat Prendergast officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Joanne is a daughter of Annie and the late Danny O’ Dwyer, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties and Burt is a son of Owen and Carmel Kerins, Kells, Co. Meath. Her mother gave the bride away and her sister; Marie O’ Dwyer was chief bridesmaid. Other bridesmaids were the groom’s sister, Toinette Kerins, and friends, Marita Gallagher and Claire O’ Hara. Troy Kerins, brother of the groom was bestman and two other brothers, Dean and Ian and a friend, Michael Farrelly were groomsmen. Pauric O’ Dwyer was pageboy and Jessica O’ Dwyer, Emily O’ Dwyer and Anna Kerins were flowergirls. Pauric O’ Dwyer and Hannah Molloy were ring and coin bearers. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. Readers were Katherine Kerins, Deborah Joyce, Andrew Reilly and Teresa O’ Dwyer. The reception was held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties and the honeymoon was spent in Italy.

The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Thursday 12th September 2002, of Con Gallagher, Kilraine, Glenties. His remains were brought to his nephew, Frank Breslin’s home on Friday and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday evening. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir celebrated Requiem Mass on Sunday morning. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. One brother, John, two sisters, Mary and Annie, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended, survive Con. Four brothers predeceased him. Jimmy, Pat and Hughie died last year and his brother Neil died some years ago.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Annie Quinn, Mill Road, Glenties on the death in Letterkenny Hospital on Wednesday 11th September 2002 of her sister Kathleen Duffy, Aranmore Island.

Congratulations to Brenda and James O’ Donnell, Dublin on the birth on Monday 2nd September 2002 of their third child, a little sister for Conor and James. James is a son of Mary and the late Jimmy O’Donnell, Lower Main St. Glenties.

Congratulations to Niamh and Jim Mc Hugh, Spiddal, Co. Galway on the birth recently of their first child, a baby boy. Jim is a son of Frankie and Mary Mc Hugh, Ardconnell, Glenties.

Congratulations and best wishes for many more years among us to Annie Mc Gowan (nee Devenney), Ardconnell, Glenties who celebrated her 90th Birthday last week.

Congratulations to Bridie Doherty, Mill Road, Glenties, who won 4300 Euro on the Dungloe GAA lotto and to Paula Hegarty, Ard Patrick, Glenties who won 2000 Euro on the Glenties GAA lotto.

Congratulations to Joanne O’Dwyer, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties and Burt Kearns from Co. Meath who were married in Glenties on Friday last.
