Glenties Notes on October 31st 2002

The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital, on Sunday 20th October 2002 of James Gallagher, Glen Road, Glenties. His remains were brought home on Monday and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Wednesday. Fr. Patrick Prendergast, P.P. Glenties, celebrated Requiem Mass. He was assisted by Fr. Hugh Hanlon, a cousin of deceased’s wife, Mary, Fr. Philip Daly, Kilclooney, Fr. Denis Quinn, Falcarragh, Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir, Glenties and Fr. Adrian Gavigan, Donegal. Readings were by James’ daughter Maria and son Carl. Daughters-in-law, Carmel, Fionnuala, Breid and Sandra and granddaughter Emma Herron read Prayers of the Faithful. Grandchildren, Michael and Kevin Herron, Molly, Mark and Jamie Gallagher, Priscella and Mathew Mullen brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’Donnell, Siobhan Ward and Denise Boyle. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. James is survived by his wife, Mary, daughters, Carmel, Catriona and Maria, sons, Seamus, Michael, Sean and Carl, sister, Elizabeth, twenty two grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Two brothers, Packie and Danny and one sister, Bridget, predeceased him.

Sincere sympathy is extended to John Joe Melly, Main St. Glenties on the death in Glasgow last week, of his sister, Mary Ellen Duffy, formerly of Lettermacaward.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Olive Mc Kelvey, Station Road, Glenties, on the death of her aunt, Nora Connaghan, Doorin, Mountcharles, which took place on Sunday 27th October 2002.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Frank O’ Donnell, Ardconnell, Glenties and Glasgow, who were married in Glenties on Saturday last.

Congratulations to Mary Rose Campbell, Silverhill, Glenties and Brian O’Dea from Co. Clare, who were married in Edeninfagh on Saturday last.

Congratulations to Sharon Sweeney, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties and John Lynch, Ard Mc Gill who were married on Friday last.

Congratulations to Dorothy Duffy, one of the named stars of the prize winning new Irish film, ‘The Magdalene Sisters’, showing this week in cinemas in Letterkenny, Lifford and Bundoran. Dorothy lived for a number of years with her parents, Sean and Rita (nee Gallagher, Ardara) Duffy in Lugnagillew in the Glen of Glenties before they moved to Douglas Bridge, Co. Tyrone and is a niece of James Gallagher, Ard Patrick and Rosaleen Mc Elhinney, Station Road, Glenties.

Best wishes to Michael Fitzgerald, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, Glenties who is heading for the States to take part in the New York Marathon on Sunday 3rd November in aid of Donegal Hospice. This will be Michael’s twenty second marathon but the first time to run in New York.

Anne Maguire Gallagher, formerly of Mullantyboyle, Glenties, will be celebrating her 90th birthday on November 2nd at the Doubletree Hotel in Plymouth Meeting (near Philadelphia), Pennsylvania. Over 90 guests are expected. Her 7 children, 15 grandchildren, and some of her 15 great grandchildren, with 2 more on the way, will attend. She is in great health and will dance the night away. Anne is the daughter of Barney and Cassie Maguire (nee Gallagher). She went to America with her family in 1929. Her husband, Daniel Philip Gallagher, (a Philome) was also from the Glenties area. He had lived in Carabet and Lough Crillan. Dan emigrated in 1926 and met Anne in Philadelphia. They were married in 1937. He died on Christmas night in 1988.

Congratulations to Breid Boyle Fintown and Gerard Gallagher, Termon, who were married in Fintown on Saturday last.

Congratulations to Jimmy Sweeney, Gortnasillagh and Heather Elliott, Lettermacaward, who were married on Saturday last.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of James Gallagher, Glen Road, Glenties, who died in Letterkenny Hospital yesterday, Sunday 20th October. His remains are coming home today and funeral is on Wednesday.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Bella Devenney, who died suddenly at her home in Dungloe, on Saturday last. Sympathy also to her nephew, Charlie Mc Cann, Mullantyboyle, Glenties. Bella and her family lived in Glenties for a number of years and had many friends in the area.

On Saturday 5th October 2002 Carol Hamill and Gerald Porter were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties. Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Carol is a daughter of Jim and Nora Hamill, Mullinamina, Glenties and Gerald is a son of Joe and Kathleen Porter, Carndonagh. Her father gave the bride away and her friend, Joan Mc Namara and her cousin, Katie Greenwood were bridesmaids. Shaun Porter was bestman and Cathal Porter was groomsman, both brothers of the groom. Twins, Orlaith and Kieran Sharkey, niece and nephew of the bride were flowergirl and pageboy. Readings were by Janette Hamill, sister of the bride and Catriona Noome, sister of the groom. Margaret Rose Porter and Enda Hamill, sister of the groom and brother of the bride read Prayers of the Faithful. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by Pat and John Francis O’ Donnell and Elizabeth Greenwood. The reception was held in the Silver Tassie, Letterkenny and the honeymoon was spent in Greece.

Congratulations to Nan (nee Keeney) and Charlie Harkin, Mill Road, Glenties, who celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary last weekend. Nan and Charlie spent most of their married life in England but have returned to their native land in recent years.

Congratulations to Kathleen Quinn, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties, who recently received her JEB Teacher Trainer Diploma in IT Skills from Rossan College, Letterkenny.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Mamie Mc Geehan, Derries, Gracie Mc Dyer, Mullantyboyle, and Annie Mc Dyer, Derries, Glenties, on the death last Thursday in Glasgow, of their brother, John O’Donnell, formerly of Meenacairn, Lettermacaward.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Maria Rafferty, Upr. Maas, Glenties, on the death of her brother Liam Ryan, which took place last week and who was buried in Athlone on Wednesday.

Congratulations to James and Clare Gallagher, Glen Road, Glenties who celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary recently.

Congratulations to Carol Hamill, Mullinamina, Glenties and Gerard Porter, Carndonagh who were married in Glenties on Saturday last.

The death took place in St. James’ Hospital, Dublin on Tuesday 1st October, of Mary Molloy, Rathgar, Dublin, daughter of the late Peter and Bridget Molloy, Upper Mully, Glenties. Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Thursday evening. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass on Friday morning. Readings were by Mary’s niece and nephew, Treasa and Sean Molloy. Ned Byrne C.E.O. St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin and Mary Casey, a nursing colleague of Mary’s read Prayers of the Faithful. Other colleagues, Sheila Mc Laughlin and Phil Burke, nephews Peadar and Pauric Molloy brought the Gifts to the Altar. The Reflection and Tribute to Mary was by Tom Houlahan, Director of Nursing in St. Vincents Hospital. Music and singing was by Sr. Immaculata, Thomas Donoghue and Amanda Mc Guigan. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Graveyard. Mary is survived by two brothers, Peadar, Lacklea, Glenties, Patrick, Ballybofey, one sister, Bried, Dublin, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

The marriage of Daniel Mc Loone and Caroline Mc Kinney took place in St. Mary’s Church, Cockhill, Buncrana on Thursday 19th September 2002. Daniel is a son of Eileen and the late Frank Mc Loone, Maas, Glenties and Caroline is a daughter of Harry and Mary Mc Kinney, Cockhill Road, Buncrana. Fr. Keenay officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Her father gave the bride away and her sister Joan Mc Kinney was bridesmaid. John Mc Loone a cousin of the groom was bestman. A cousin of the bride, Tanya Collins was flowergirl. Readers were Mary and Anne Mc Loone, sisters of the groom. Bried Keenan and her daughter, Charlene, a sister and niece of the bride brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in the Mount Errigal, Hotel, Letterkenny and the honeymoon was spent in Portugal.

The death took place peacefully at her home, on Wednesday 25th September 2002, of Margaret (Wee Joe) Gallagher, Tullyard Road and formerly of Main Street, Glenties. Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Thursday evening where Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. received them. Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass on Friday morning. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Margaret is survived by sisters, Agnes Gallagher, Tullyard Road, Glenties, Mary Crosse, Tipperary, brother, John Francis Gallagher, Ballycashel, Ardara, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, sisters-in-law, Mary Rose Gallagher, Ballycashel and Mary Gallagher, Donegal, brothers-in-law, Michael Crosse, Tipperary and Declan Murphy, Long Island, New York, other relatives and many friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband, Joe predeceased her in 1972, her brother Packie in 1984 and her sister Annie Murphy in 2000.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives of Maggie Billingsley, Hill Head, Ardara and formerly of Mullinamina, Glenties, who died on Monday 23rd September 2002 and who was buried in Ardara.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Sandy Mc Devitt, Glen Road, Glenties, on the death of her mother, which took place in Dublin on Tuesday 24th September 2002.
