Glenties Notes on August 29th 2003

James Brennan and Alice Mulligan were married on Saturday 9th August 2003 in St. Mary’s Church, Gorthlettragh, Mohill, Co. Leitrim. Fr. Quinn officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. James is a son of Phil and Mary Brennan, Stranaglough, Glenties and Alice is a daughter of John and Mary Mulligan, Cattan, Mohill, Co. Leitrim. Her father gave the bride away and her sister; Fiona Mulligan was her bridesmaid. Raymond Brennan, brother of the groom was bestman. Niamh Brennan was a flowergirl. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in the Bush Hotel, Carrick-on Shannon.

Congratulations and best wishes to John Mc Glynn and Emma Mc Groary, who were married in St. Colmcille’s Church, Fintown on Saturday 23rd August 2003. John is a son of John and Kitty Mc Glynn, Meentymoragle, Fintown and Emma is a daughter of Seamus and Anne Mc Groary, Fintown. The reception was held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties.

Congratulations to Terry and Aidan O’Donnell, New York on the birth of their third child on Tuesday 19th August 2003. A little brother for Aisling and Aidan. Aidan is a native of Glenties.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Mark Mc Devitt, The Rock, Glenties of the death of his grandmother, Jean Maloney, Hill Head, Ardara, which took place on Thursday 21st August 2003.

Congratulations to James Brennan, Stranaglough, Glenties and Alice Mulligan, Mohill, Co. Leitrim, who were married on Saturday 9th August.

The death took place peacefully at her home on Saturday 9th August 2003 of Bridie Elliott, Maas, Glenties. Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Monday morning. Fr. Patrick Prendergast celebrated Requiem Mass. Music was by Sr. Immaculata on the organ. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Bridie is survived by one son, James, Maas and one daughter, Josephine, England, granddaughter, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband, Sam predeceased her over thirty years ago. Her sisters, Maggie, Kate, Annie and Mary and brother Dan also predeceased her. Bridie celebrated her 90th Birthday in January of this year.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the husband and family, relatives and friends of Maureen Quinn, Clonsilla, Dublin who died on Saturday 16th August 2003. Maureen’s husband, Sean is a son of the late Joe and Annie Quinn, Kilkenny, Glenties.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the husband, mother, sisters, uncles, aunts other relatives and friends of Tony Campbell, who died recently in London. Her late father, Dr. Dermott Campbell was a native of Glenties.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Virginia Coyle (formerly Sweeney of Gortnasillagh, Glenties, who died recently in Toronto, Canada.

Congratulations to Carmel and Willie Mc Hugh, Narin Road, Glenties of the birth recently of their fifth child, a baby brother for Jamie, Ciaran, Joseph and Daniel.

Congratulations to Mairead and Richard Hanlon, Kilraine, Glenties on the birth recently of their baby girl.

Congratulation to Pat and Patricia Molloy, Mill Road, Glenties who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary recently.

Congratulations to the following students who were successful in their Traditional Fiddle Playing exams held by Comhaltas Ceoltórí Eireann; Thomas Melly – (Distinction Junior 2), Thomas is a son of Martin and Noreen Melly, Letterilly, Glenties; Ciaran and Jamie Mc Hugh – (Honours Junior 1), Ciaran and Jamie are sons of Willie and Carmel Mc Hugh, Narin Road, Glenties; Seamus Gallagher – (Honours Junior 1), Seamus is a son of Mary and Pat Gallagher, Maas, Glenties; Leonard Quinn – (Merit Junior 1). Leonard is a son of Bernie and Carmel Quinn, Kilkenny, Glenties. The boys are all pupils of Phyllis Mc Nelis.

The death took place in Toronto, Canada on Monday 28th July 2003 of Seamus Mc Dermott, Toronto, and formerly of Edeninfagh, Glenties. His remains were brought to his native home on Friday 8th August and to The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Saturday morning. The deceased’s brother, Fr. Padraig, assisted by Fr. Patrick Prendergast, Fr, Francis Mc Loone, Fr. John Mc Glynn, Fr. Denis Quinn, Fr. Eddie Gallagher, Fr. Padraig Ó Baoill, Fr. Kevin Gillespie and Mons. Murray, concelebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by Conor and Kevin, sons of the deceased and his daughter Shauna read Prayers of the Faithful. Music was by St. Connell’s Church choir. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Graveyard. He is survived by his wife, Judy, sons, Conor and Kevin, daughter, Shauna, grandson, Liam, brothers, Fr. Padraig, Donal, Liam and Gerry, sister, Rosaleen, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Seamus was the eldest of the family of the late Con and Fanny Mc Dermott, Edeninfagh, Glenties.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the son and daughter, other relatives and friends of Bridie Elliott, Maas, Glenties, who died peacefully at her home on Saturday morning last.

The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Friday 25th July 2003 of Jim Harkin, Stranaglough and formerly of Strasallagh, Glenties. His remains were brought to his home on Saturday and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Monday morning. Fr. Patrick Prendergast, Fr. Eddie Gallagher and Canon Leo Moore concelebrated Requiem Mass. Readings and Psalm were read by Jim’s grandchildren, Terence and Michael Gillavan and Michelle Sharman. Music was by Sr. Immaculata on the organ. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Jim is survived by his wife, Nan, daughters, Mary, Rose and Barbara, sons, John, Patsy, Tommy and Gerry, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. He was predeceased by three daughters, Kathleen, Annie and Ita and one son, James, four sisters, Annie, Bridget, Bella and Kathleen and was the last surviving member of the family of James and Mary Harkin, Strasallagh, Glenties.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Kitty Ward, Tievedeevan, Fintown who died in Letterkenny Hospital on Tuesday 29th July 2003. Her remains were brought to her home later that day and burial took place on Thursday after Requiem Mass in St. Colmcille’s Church, Fintown.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Seamus Mc Dermott, formerly of Edeninfagh, Glenties who died in Toronto, Canada last week. His remains are due home this week.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Bella Mc Gill, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties on the death of her sister, Bried Commiskey, which took place in Monaghan on Saturday last.

Mass will be celebrated in Edeninfagh Graveyard next Sunday 10th August at 3.00p.m.

Mass will be celebrated in the Old Graveyard on the Glen Road next Monday evening 11th August at 7.00p.m.

Congratulations to Margaret and John Mc Geehan, Derries on the birth recently of their third child, a baby brother for Sinead and Claire.

We were blessed again this year with a beautiful afternoon for our Graveyard Mass in Glenties last Sunday. As usual the attendance was very big. Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Patrick Prendergast, Glenties, Fr. John Mc Loone, Frosses, Fr. Denis Quinn, Falcarragh, Fr. Adrian Gavigan, Donegal and Fr. Kevin Gillespie, Fintown. The Rosary was recited during the blessing of the graves.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife and family of Jim Harkin, Stranaglough, who died in Letterkenny Hospital on Friday last 25th July.
