Glenties Notes on July 29th 2004

Miriam Ward and Declan Gallagher came from Philadelphia to celebrate their special day at home in Ireland. They were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 17th July 2004. Miriam is a daughter of Charlie and Kathleen Ward, Buncrubog, Glenties and Declan is a son of Michael and Mary Gallagher, Donegal Rd. Ballybofey. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Her father gave the bride away and her sisters, Rose Langan, Lucielle Kelly, Carina Ward and a friend, Bethann Mc Pharland attended her. Leo Gallagher, the groom’s brother was his bestman and another brother Michael and two cousins, Conor Brady and Brian Gallagher were groomsmen. Chloe Langan, niece of the bride was flowergirl and Shane Bell, nephew of the bride and Gareth Culloo nephew of the groom were pageboys. Readings were by Pat Ward, brother of the bride and Sheena Culloo, sister of the groom. Adam Langan, Ryan Ward, nephews of the bride, Brendan and Aisling Gallagher and Amy Martin nieces and nephew of the groom read Prayers of the Faithful. Lisa Mc Gill read a Reflection after Communion. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties and the honeymoon was spent touring Europe. The happy couple will make their home in Philadelphia.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Frank Gallagher, Main Street, Glenties, John Gallagher, Strasallagh, Glenties and Kathleen Boyle, Shallogans on the death of their niece, Celia Mc Fadden (nee Loughrey) who died recently in Letterkenny.

Congratulations to Caroline and Daniel Mc Loone, Maas on the birth recently in Letterkenny of their first child, a baby boy.

Congratulations to Miriam Ward, Buncrubog, Glenties and Declan Gallagher, Ballybofey who were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday last.

There was a big crowd again this year at the Mass in the New Graveyard in Glenties last Sunday and thank God we were blessed with a good day. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties assisted by local men Fr. John Mc Loone P.P. Frosses, Fr. Denis Quinn P.P. Falcarragh and Fr. Adrian Gavigan Chaplain in Letterkenny Hospital concelebrated the Maas. Fr. John recited the Rosary before Mass during the blessing of the graves.

Prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery to our Parish Priest, Fr. Prendergast who is recovering after an operation.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Mary Ita Boyle, Letterilly, Glenties on the death of her brother Teague Harkin, Rosbeg, which took place recently in Sligo Hospital, and to all the family, relatives and friends.

Donegal Local Development Company is in the process of planning its first Farmers Market for Mid August 2004 in Letterkenny. There are a number of places still available for stallholders in the following areas; dairy products, organic products, bakery products and unusual foods. There was a good crowd at the Official Opening of the 24th annual Patrick MacGill Summer School, last Sunday evening in the Comprehensive School, Glenties. Former Taoiseach Dr. Garrett Fitzgerald gave the Fourth Annual John Hume Lecture this year. You can still catch the last few days of the school, which ends on Friday. All morning and afternoon events are in the Highlands Hotel and all evening events are in the Comprehensive School.

A Mass for the late Cormac McAnallan RIP will be celebrated in Drimarone Church on Friday 23rd July. There will be refreshments in the Blue Stack Centre afterwards and people will have an opportunity to have their photo taken with the Sam Maguire Cup.

On Friday 2nd July 2004 Danielle Mc Kelvey and Gavin Kelly were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Danielle is a daughter of Peter and Olive Mc Kelvey, Stranaglough, Glenties and Gavin is a son of Seamus and Marion Kelly, Strabane. Danielle’s parents gave her away and her cousin Kelly Gallagher was her bridesmaid. Gareth Kelly, a brother of the groom was bestman. David Mc Kelvey, brother of the bride and Conal Kelly, brother of the groom were ushers. Readings were by Rory Kelly, brother of the groom and a friend of the bride, Emma Mc Cracken. David Mc Kelvey, Conal Kelly, Eimear Vaughan, Seána Vaughan, Conan Lundy, Lauren and Nicola Gallagher read Prayers of the Faithful. The groom’s parents brought the Gifts to the Altar. Aileen Scullion read a Reflection after Communion. Music was by Eileen Carr, Margaret Rhatigan, Tara Gallagher and Ruth Gallagher. The reception was held in Harvey’s Point Hotel, Lough Eske, Donegal Town and the honeymoon is being spent in New York and Florida.

Congratulations to Jean and P.J. Campbell, Ard Patrick, Glenties on the birth last week in Letterkenny Hospital of their second child, a baby sister for Mark.

Mass will be celebrated in Glenties Graveyard next Sunday 18th July at 3.00p.m. and in Edeninfagh Graveyard on Sunday 8th August at 3.00p.m. Mass in Kilclooney Graveyard is on Sunday 25th July.

Edwina is a daughter of Eddie and Anne Bonner, Ardconnell, Glenties and Martin is a son of Eugene and Kathleen Bennett, Ardara. Her father gave the bride away and her sisters, Tara Mc Devitt, Noelle, and Linda Bonner attended her. Aodh Brennan, a friend of the groom was bestman. John Damien Gallagher, a friend and Derek Bennett, brother of the groom were groomsmen. Chelsea Bennett was flowergirl and Peter Bennett was pageboy. Readings were by Gavin Bonner, brother of the bride and Jeanna Bennett, sister of the groom. Colin Bonner, Michelle & Stephanie Bennett, Charlie Dooley and Ciara Hennigan read Prayers of the Faithful. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in the Lake House Hotel, Clooney, Portnoo and the honeymoon is being spent in Jamaica.

Congratulations to Danielle Mc Kelvey, Stranaglough, Glenties and Gavin Kelly, Strabane who were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday last.

Congratulations to Edwina Bonner, Ardconnell, Glenties and Martin Bennett, Ardara who were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday last.

The death took place at his home on Wednesday 30th June 2004 of John Gallagher, Ard Patrick, Glenties. His remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Thursday evening, where Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties received them. Fr. Ó Gallachóir assisted by Fr. Adrian Gavigan, Chaplain Letterkenny Hospital celebrated Requiem Mass on Friday afternoon at 3.00p.m. Burial took place afterwards in the New Graveyard. John is survived by his wife May, sisters, Mary and Annie, sister-in-law Annie Devenney, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Five brothers predeceased him, Neil, Jimmy, Pat, Hughie and Con.

Writer and broadcaster, Olivia O Leary will perform the official opening of the 24th annual Patrick MacGill Summer School on Sunday 18th July. The theme this year is “Politics and Democracy in Ireland in the 21st century. Among the high profile speakers who will attend this year is former Taoiseach, Garrett Fitzgerald, Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness, Justice Minister, Michael McDowell, Labour Party Leader, Pat Rabbitte, Finance Minister, Charlie McCreevy and Minister for Education, Noel Demsey. The school runs through until Friday. The list of speakers and guests is subject to change.

Mass will be celebrated in Glenties Graveyard on Sunday 18th July at 3.00p.m. and in Edeninfagh Graveyard on Sunday 8th August at 3.00p.m.

Glenties Medical Hall (Chemists) is now open Monday to Friday from 9.30a.m until 6.00p.m. and on Saturday from 10.00a.m. until 6.00p.m. There is no lunch hour closing. It is now under the new management of Garrett O’ Donnell who has taken over from Paddy Lalor who has served the community for a good number of years. We wish Paddy a very happy retirement and Garrett the best of luck with his new enterprise.

There is a Special Pilgrimage to Knock celebrating 150 years of Devotion to the Sacred Heart on Saturday 24th July. A coach will be leaving Dungloe at 7.30a.m. and Glenties at 8.15a.m. Contact John Mc Kelvey at 087-6410676 or 074-9546257.

Kathleen Bonner and Chad Lefler were united in marriage at an outdoor ceremony on Saturday 29th May 2004 at 4.00p.m. at Storybook Farm, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Pastor Johnny Boggs and Ordination Candidate Phillip Shoe officiated at the Ceremony. A reception followed the service on the grounds. The bride is a daughter of Barbara and Neily Bonner, Dry Arch, Straboy, Glenties and the groom is a son of Judy and Dale Lefler, Rockwell, North Carolina. Her father escorted the bride and her sister Aisling was bridesmaid. Thomas Bonner nephew of the bride was ring bearer. The bride’s family travelled to North Carolina to be part of the special day. Thank you to all our friends and neighbours in Glenties for your kind wishes and gifts. The couple has made their home in Durham, North Carolina.

Congratulations and best wishes to John and Aggie O’ Donnell, Ard Patrick, Glenties, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, last week.

Congratulations to Nora and Phil Gallagher, Buncrubog, Glenties, who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last week.

The death took place at her home of Mary Craig, Buncrubog, Glenties on Friday 18th June 2004. Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Sunday where they were received by Fr. Prendergast P.P. who also celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by Mary’s granddaughters, Emma Craig and Kathleen Bonner. Her great-granddaughter, Andrea Molloy read the Psalm. Maria and Pat Craig, Tracy Devine and John Paul Molloy brought the Gifts to the Altar. All are grandchildren of the deceased. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Mary is survived by two daughters Julia Molloy, Buncrubog, and Mary Doherty, Stranaglough, three sons, Terence and Joe, Glenties and Packie in Dublin, one sister, Annie Donovan, Portlaoise, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband, Packie predeceased her ten years ago and her grandson, Pat Molloy in 1988. Mary had a long life – she celebrated her 94th birthday earlier this year and enjoyed good health for most of those years.
