Glenties Notes on December 30th 2004

On Saturday 4th December 2004 Caroline Hegarty and Brendan Ward were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties. Fr. Paul Gallagher, Glenties and Fr. Sweeney, Glenfin officiated and concelebrated Nuptial Mass. Caroline is a daughter of John and Paula Hegarty, Ard Patrick, Glenties and Brendan is a son of Peadar and Marian Ward, Boulty Patrick, Cloghan. Her father gave the bride away and her four sisters Nicola Cruise, Angeline, Stephanie and Natalie Hegarty were her bridesmaids. Donal Mc Elwee was bestman and Barry Mc Menamin, Seamus Roper and Thomas Óg Mc Garrigle were groomsmen. All are friends of the groom. Readings were by Fiona Ward, sister of the groom and Georgina Mc Hugh aunt of the bride. Dermot and Paul Hegarty, brothers of the bride, Fiona Ward, sister of the groom and John Mc Sweeney, a friend, read Prayers of the Faithful. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in Harvey’s Point Hotel, Lough Eske, Donegal Town and the honeymoon was spent on a Caribbean Cruise.

The death took place, suddenly, at his home of Cormac Gallagher, Main Street, Glenties on Friday 17th December 2004 and his remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Sunday 19th December. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir assisted by Fr. Adrian Gavigan celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by Cormac’s niece Magella Gavigan and his brother-in-law Terence Sweeney. Sharon Gallagher, Pauline Mc Devitt and Amanda Mc Daid read Prayers of the Faithful. Cormac’s sons, Niall, Lawrence and John Paul and his daughter Elaine brought the Gifts to the Altar. His sister-in-law, Caroline Hanlon, read a Communion Reflection. Music and singing was by Amanda Mc Guigan, Pat O’ Donnell, Denise Boyle and St. Connell’s Church Choir. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Cormac (a native of Ardara) is survived by his wife, Eileen (Sweeney), daughters Christine, Boston, and Elaine, Glenties, sons, Lawrence, Niall and John Paul, Glenties, grandchildren, Brendan and Caoilum, son-in-law, Liam, daughter-in-law, Sharon, sister Mary Gavigan, Ardara, brothers Leo, Joseph, Martin, Gerard and Ned in England, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Two brothers Patsy and Johnny and one sister Annie predeceased him.

Congratulations to Tracy Mc Kenna who graduated recently with an Associate Bachelors Degree in Computing from the University of Ulster, Coleraine. Tracy is a daughter of Sean and Rosaleen Mc Kenna, Kilraine Lr. Glenties.

Congratulations to Emma Craig who graduated recently from U.C.D. with an Honours B. A. Degree in Politics and Sociology. Emma is a daughter of Joe and Ann Craig, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties.

Congratulations to Sinéad Rafferty who recently graduated from U.C.D. with an Honours B. A. Degree in Music and Italian. Sinéad is a daughter of Jim and Maria Rafferty, Maas, Glenties.

Congratulations to Connell Mc Loone, Glen Road, Glenties and Denis Ellis, Glencolmcille, who were the winners of the All-Ireland Simultaneous Bridge Pairs Competition, which was held throughout Ireland on Monday 3rd November.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife, family, relatives and friends of Cormac Gallagher, Main Street, Glenties, who died suddenly at his home on Friday morning 17th December.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Sadie Ward, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, Glenties on the death of her uncle, Danny Campbell, which took place in Scotland on Saturday 18th December 2004.

Congratulations to our new chemist, Garrett O’Donnell and Joanne Brewster, who were married in Enniskillen on Saturday 20th November 2004. Joanne is a sister of Fermanagh county footballers, Tom and Paul Brewster. The happy couple climbed Killimanjaro when they were on honeymoon in Africa.

Congratulations to our minor team who defeated Gortnamona in the Ulster Club competition in St. Paul’s GAA grounds, Belfast on Sunday last. The annual presentation Dinner Dance will be held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Tuesday 28th December.

Congratulations to Janice Mc Nelis, who graduated recently from Sligo Institute of Technology with a Master of Arts Degree (by Research) in Sustainable Tourism Development and Planning. Janice is a daughter of Willie and Teresa Mc Nelis, Narin Road, Glenties.

The Christmas barn dance will be held in the Highland’s Hotel on Tuesday 14th December. Music by Country Traditions. Dancing from 9.30 pm until 12.30am. Supper will be served.

Congratulations to Rossana and Matt Mannering on birth of their first child Rebecca Elizabeth Mannering in Parma, Italy on Tuesday 30th Nov at 27 minutes past midnight. Matt is the son of Tony and Margaret Mannering, The Glen.

Late John O’Donnell
On Sunday 7th November the sudden death took place in Letterkenny General Hospital of John O’Donnell, Ard Patrick Glenties. His remains were brought to his home later that evening, and on Tuesday evening to St. Connell’s Church Fr Nigel Gallagher, Canon Leo Moore, Fr. John McLoone, Fr Philip Daly and Fr. Denis Quinn concelebrated Requiem Mass. The reading were read by his daughters, Mrs Anne Finn and Teresa O’Donnell. Prayers of the Faithful were read by John Frances and Tommy O’Donnell, (sons), Mary Molony, (daughter) Joan O’Donnell, Kathleen Bonner (nieces). The gifts were brought to the alter by his grandchildren, Sinead Finn, Mark and Gavin Molony, Colleen and Gemma O’Donnell. The folk choir along with Peter Campbell provided music. His son Pat sang a hymn at Communion time. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. He is survived by his wife Agnes, Daughters, Anne Finn, Sandfield, Mary Molony, Dun Laoghaire, Teresa, Chicago, Sons, Tommy, Pat, Glenties, and John Frances, Gortnacart, Ardara,brothers Joe and Frank, England, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandchildren to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His brothers Phonsie, Patrick and Hugh, sisters Mary and Kathleen predeceased him. John was in his 86th year and enjoyed life to the full attending as many music sessions as possible in the locality and always sang a few songs himself. An interview with John O’Donnell by journalist Noel Slevin was in the Donegal on Sunday on the morning of his death.

Senior Citizens Party
The Senior Citizens Party will be held in the Highlands Hotel on Sunday 5th Dec at 3.00pm, starting with Mass followed by a dinner and entertainment. Local people are asked to come along and support this function and to enjoy the evening with the senior citizens.

President’s Awards 2004
Congratulations to four senior level students in the Comprehensive School who were awarded medals and certificates at a ceremony in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran recently. The received their President’s Awards for the completion of personal challenges in community involvement, learning a new skill, physical fitness and completing a 125-mile cycle in August last. The three Bronze medals were awarded to Alyce McGrath from Ardara, Luke Cape from Glenties and Conal O’Callaghan from Kilraine, A Silver medal was awarded to Marinus Toman from Ardara. Their presidents Award leader was teacher, Gerry Moore, Glenties.

Achiever’s Awards
Congratulations to Kevin Herron, youngest son of Michael and Carmel Herron, Ballyeriston, Clooney who received a High Achiever’s Award from the Royal Irish Academy of Music at a concert and presentation ceremony in Virginia, Co Cavan recently. Kevin is a piano student and received his award for achieving a Distinction in the Preliminary Grade exam in May.
