Glenties Notes on February 24th 2005

Congratulations to Christy Hegarty and Pat Walsh who were the winners of the Laghey Pairs Tournament and were Quarter Finalists in the Gortahork Pairs Tournament.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Johnny Boyle, Highlands Hotel, Glenties on the death of his uncle, Hughie Mc Cready, Corr Point, Lettermacaward, which took place last week, also to Hughie’s wife and family and to all the relatives and friends.

Glenties has been nominated this year for the Entente Florale, a European Competition for Towns and Villages. A meeting was held in the Community Centre on Monday night. Glenties Tidy Town Committee is organising a ‘Big Clean-Up Day’ on Saturday 26th February. Please come to the Community Centre at 10.00 a.m.

As a result of a meeting held in the Highlands Hotel. Glenties on the 10th February a new committee was formed for the Glenties Community Television. New equipment is required so that a better reception can he had by those who receive the transmission from the mast. To cover the cost of this a ‘Door-to-Door’ collection of fifty Euro will be made by members of the committee. Payments can also be made to Eunan Mc Glinchey at the Mace Supermarket, Main St. Glenties.

Congratulations to Glenties Bowling Club players, Paddy Boyle and Fr. Adrian Gavigan on winning the Burtonport Pairs Tournament and to John Hegarty and Pat Walsh who were Runners-Up. Congratulations to Christy Hegarty and Pat Walsh who reached the quarterfinals in the recent St. Johnston Tournament.

Sincere sympathy is extended to John Joe Melly, Main St. Glenties on the death of his sister, Annie Crawford, which took place recently in Scotland.

The 24-hour Shoe-the-Donkey Marathon sessions organised recently by Denise Boyle in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties raised 4,391.00Euro for the Tsunami Relief Fund. Denise wishes to thank all those who were involved in the event.

A Barn / Céilí & Set Dance will be held in the Community Centre, Glenties on Friday 18th February. Dancing is from 10.00p.m. until 1.00a.m. Music is by Art Mc Nally and admission is 7.00 Euro.

Congratulations to Susie and Francis Houston, Co-op Glenties and Ballykilduff, on the birth of their first child, a baby girl.

Congratulations to Angela and Terence Molloy, The Limelight, Glenties and Ardara on the birth of their third child, a baby brother for Mary Ellen and John Ross.

Congratulations and best wishes for many more years among us to Mary B. Mc Gill, Glen Road, Glenties, who celebrated her 90th Birthday on the 2nd February 2005.

Congratulations to John Hegarty, son, Paul, Ard Patrick, brother, Christy, Mullantyboyle, Glenties and Pat Walsh, Kilkenny, Glenties, who won the National Rinks; to Christy Hegarty and Pat Walsh, who won the National Pairs and to Christy Hegarty, who was Runner Up in the National Singles in Laghey recently.

Congratulations to Martina Mc Dermott, Meenagrubby, Glenties and Patrick Hanlon, Dungloe who got engaged recently.

Many thanks to all the parents, relatives and neighbours who sponsored students from the Comprehensive School, Glenties who participated in the 2004 24 hour fast for Concern. A total of just under 4,000 Euro was raised. The fast was organised by the 2B CSPE class and teacher Gerry Moore.

Congratulations and best wishes for many more years among us to Anna Mc Dougall, Ardconnell, Glenties, who celebrated her 90th Birthday on Friday 28th January.
