Glenties Notes on July 28th 2005

The marriage of Olivia Hegarty and Eamon Oates took place in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 16th July 2005. Fr. Adrian Gavigan officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Olivia is a daughter of Christy and Una Hegarty, Mullantyboyle, Glenties and Eamon is a son of Tommy and Gabrielle Oates, Sligo. . Her father gave the bride away and her sister Muriel Hegarty and friend, Francine Connaghan were her bridesmaids. Tomás Oates, brother of the groom was bestman and another brother Donagh was groomsman. Readings were by Frank Mc Mahon, friend of the groom and Olivia Mc Nelis, friend of the bride. Gary and Owen O’Donnell, Anne Connaghan, Eileen Rafferty friends, and Charles Sweeney, cousin of the bride read Prayers of the Faithful. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by Pauline Glackin and Joe Rodgers. The reception was held in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town and the honeymoon was spent in Lanzarote.

On Saturday 16th July 2005 John Paul Gallagher and Pauline Mc Devitt were married in St. Conal’s Church, Kilclooney, Portnoo. Fr. Martin Delaney officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. John Paul is a son of Eileen and the late Cormac Gallagher, Glenties and Pauline is a daughter of Connell and Beatrice Mc Devitt, Loughfad, Portnoo. Her father gave the bride away and her friend, Maryann Boyle, sister-in-law, Ann and cousin, Martina Mc Devitt attended her. The groom’s brother, Niall was bestman and his friends, Kevin Mc Elhinney and Neil Byrne were groomsmen. Catrina, Natalie, Emily and Danielle Mc Devitt were flowergirls and Caoilum Gallagher, Shane, Kevin, Connell and Frankie Mc Devitt were pageboys. Readings were by Michelle Hanlon cousin of the groom and Frankie Mc Devitt, brother of the bride. Stacey Mc Devitt, Amanda Mc Daid, Patricia Mc Devitt, Sharon Gallagher and Douglas Gallagher read Prayers of the Faithful. John Paul’s grandmother, Sadie Sweeney and the bride’s brothers, Pauric and Michael brought the Gifts to the Altar. Janice Mc Nelis read a Communion Reflection. Music and Singing was by Cliona Heena and Yvonne Slowey. The reception was held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties and the honeymoon was spent in the Canaries.

The death took place on Thursday 14th July 2005 in the Donegal Hospice, Letterkenny of John Boyle, Meenalig. His remains were brought home on Friday and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday. Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties and Fr. Adrian Gavigan, Chaplin Letterkenny Hospital concelebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by Chloe Keeney and Lorna Murphy. Martin and Kevin Fallon, Darren Murphy, Sean Keeney and Stephen Henry read Prayers of the Faithful. Cathy Boyle and Paul Henry brought the Gifts to the Altar. All are grandchildren of the deceased. Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’ Donnell. Burial took place in Kilraine Graveyard. John is survived by his wife, Peggy, daughters, Mary Murphy, Lutton, Anna Alt, Castlebar, Patricia Henry, Lutton, Theresa Keeney, Ardara, son, Timmy, Straoughter, sisters, Mary B. Boyle, Ardara, Theresa Gaughan, London, Rose Wood, Knock, brother, Connie, Suffolk, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His sister, Kathleen Mc Laughlin and his brother Dinny predeceased him.

Collette Mc Hugh and James Carberry were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 9th July 2005. Fr. Pat Prendergast officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Collette is a daughter of James and Margaret Mc Hugh, Drimnacrosh, Glenties and James is son of James and Fionuala Carberry, Bomany, Letterkenny. Her father gave the bride away and her sisters Karen Lorraine and Emma Mc Hugh and the groom’s sister Fiona Carberry attended her. Stephen Carberry, brother of the groom was bestman and his brother Edward and his cousin, Pauric Carberry were groomsmen. Alise Cunningham and Rachel Mc Hugh were flowergirls and James Carberry was a pageboy. Readings were by Declan Mc Hugh, brother of the bride and Lucy Carberry, sister of the groom. Paul, Martin and Pauric Mc Hugh, brothers of the bride and Stephanie Rutherford, Rose and Celine Carberry, sisters of the groom read Prayers of the Faithful. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by the O’Callaghan Family. The reception was held in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town and the honeymoon was spent in Thailand.

Congratulations to Elaine and Barry Fee, Letterkenny on the birth of their first child, a baby boy (Adam), on the 20th June 2005. Elaine is a daughter of Sean and Una Boyle, Ard Patrick, Glenties.

The death took place in the Donegal Hospice on Monday 11th July 2005 of Patsy Herron, Mill Road, Glenties. His remains were brought home on Tuesday and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Wednesday. Fr. Pat Prendergast assisted by Fr. John Mc Loone concelebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by nephews, Arthur and Ronan Mc Loone. Patsy’s sister, Alma and nieces Gemma and Siobhan Mc Loone and Mary Carson read Prayers of the Faithful. Music was by Sr. Immaculata on the organ. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Patsy is survived by his wife, Eilish, sisters, Kathleen, Eithne, Brenda and Alma, brother, Michael, aunt, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife, family, relatives and friends of John Boyle, Meenalig who died in the Donegal Hospice, Letterkenny on Thursday 14th July 2005.

Mass will be celebrated in the Old Graveyard on Thursday 21st July at 8.00p.m.

We were blessed with a lovely afternoon for our Mass in the New Graveyard last Sunday. As usual there was a big crowd. Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties, Fr. John Mc Loone P.P. Frosses and Fr. Denis Quinn P.P. Falcarragh. Rose Molloy recited the Rosary during the blessing of the graves.

The recent Cake Sale in aid of Glenties Playgroup and Afterschool raised 671.30 Euro. Thanks to all the parents and volunteers who baked and helped organise this successful fundraiser and also those who supported it.

The first Disco in the Playgroup Building was a great success. Profit on the night was E118.00. Thanks to all the adults who gave their time to supervise. Disco will be continuing weekly. An Auction and Bring and Buy Sale is being organised for Saturday 30th July. Anyone wishing to donate furniture, toys, books, clothes, electrical items (in working order) please contact 074- 9551032 or 074-9551904 before 25th July. Collection of items can be arranged.

A Computer Class will be commencing shortly in Mullanmore School. Anyone interested ring 074-9551192.

Monday 25th to Saturday 30thJuly is Water Safety Week at Narin and Portnoo. A bus will be provided which will leave Mc Guinness’s at 10.30a.m. on Monday 25th. This will bring children to the swim classes. Water Safety Classes will begin on the Pier in Portnoo on Monday afternoon. Times will be publicised next week. Cost for the week is 15 Euro per child and 2 Euro each day for the bus.

The Nationwide team was filming in town earlier this week and the programme will be shown on television on Friday 22nd July at 7.00p.m.

The Gum Doctor came to town last week to remove the chewing gum from the footpaths. He and his team have done a great job.

Best wishes to our new Post Mistress, Edel Breslin, who took over her new position on Friday last. Edel is from Cork and is married to local man Michael Breslin, Glen Road, Glenties. Best wishes also and many thanks to her predecessor, Nancy Mc Loone, who has retired due to ill health. Nancy served the community well for many years and has always been more than helpful during those years.

The 25th Annual Patrick MacGill Summer School & Arts Week will be held in Glenties from Sunday 17th – Friday 22nd July. The Theme this year is ‘A Plan for Ireland 2005 – 2030’. All events on Sunday take place in the Highlands Hotel. During the week all morning and afternoon events are in the Hotel and evening events are in St. Columba’s Comprehensive School. The Official Opening by H.E. The French Ambassador M.Frederic Grasset is at 8.30p.m. followed by The Fifth Annual John Hume Lecture delivered by Mrs. Nuala O’Loan, Police Ombudsman for N. Ireland will be in the Ballroom of the Highlands Hotel. Patrick MacGill Poetry Awards is at 5.30p.m. and the Opening of Exhibition of Paintings by Johnny Boyle is at 6.15p.m.

Among the well-known names on the guest list this year are – Dr. Diarmuid Martin, Dr. Robin Eames, Joe Little, Brid Rodgers, Seamus Brennan, Fr. Peter Mc Verry, SJ, Dr. Mick Loftus, Joan Burton, George Lee, Michael Mc Dowell, Liz Mc Manus, John Gormley, Noel Demsey, Ruairi Quinn, Mary Lou Mc Donald, Dr. Garret Fitzgerald, Martin Mc Guinness, Mark Durkin, Mary Hanafin, Pat Rabitte and many more. As well as the Lectures at night there will be lots of things to do during the day, Art Classes, Painting and Sketching Courses for adults and children, Exhibitions and Workshops. Among the exhibitions will be a new exhibition of Donegal Photographs by local man Denis Tynan.

Colm Melly, Glenties has written a book about life in Donegal from the thirties to the present day. It will be launched on Monday 18th July at 5.30p.m. in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties at the MacGill Summer School.

On Saturday 25th June 2005 Mary Ford and Brendan Gormley were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties. Fr. Larry Crowe, a friend of the groom, officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Mary is a daughter of Michael and Peggy Ford, Letterkenny and granddaughter of the late Andy and Mary Mc Nelis, Ardconnell, Glenties and Brendan is a son of Tony and Marie Gormley, Tallaght, Dublin. Her parents gave the bride away. Jean and Paul Gormley, sister and brother of the groom were bridesmaid and bestman. Readings were by Sean and Michael Ford, the bride’s brothers. Her friend, Julie-Ann Somers, read Prayers of the Faithful. The parents of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in Harvey’s Point Hotel, Lough Eske, Donegal Town and the honeymoon was spent in Dubai and Thailand.

The Swimming and Water Safety Classes in Narin and Portnoo have been rescheduled to avoid a clash with the GAA Summer Camp in Ardara. The week will be running from 25th – 30th July. All are very welcome.

Congratulations to the boys and girls from Fintown who received their First Holy Communion on Sunday 29th May 2005. They were – Conal Mc Geehan, Siobhan Mc Devitt, Catherine Mc Gill, Sarah Timoney, Liam Brennan, Liam Mc Devitt, Catherine Bonner, Pádraig Ó Baoill, Edel Ellis and James Mc Kelvey.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family, relatives and friends of Joe Coyle, Jnr. formerly of Tangavane, Glenties, who died in Scotland last week.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Mary Ita Boyle, Maas, Glenties on the death last week of her brother, Seamie Harkin, Rosbeg and also to his family, relatives and friends.
