A public meeting will be held on Thursday 29th September in Mullanmore School at 8.00p.m. to discuss the ESB’s proposal to use the Glen of Glenties as an optional route corridor for a high voltage line from Binbane to Letterkenny and as a location for a switching station. The proposed line will consist of double wood pole structures with lattice steel towers at changes of direction. This development, while being of no direct advantage to the Glen, will constitute a serious health risk, devaluate property and clutter the Glen with additional pylons and poles with consequent damage to its natural beauty. It is important that the residents of the Glen, including the Glen Road should attend this meeting.

The past pupils of Glenties Comprehensive School will host a celebration concert ‘Thank You For The Music’ on Saturday 1st October at 8.30p.m. with Jim Rafferty as guest of honour. Tickets are E 10.00 (usual concessions) and are on sale from the school at 9551172. This promises to be a unique night and we hope as many past pupils as possible will be among the large attendance.

Matt Mc Granaghan from Castlefin in Co. Donegal has been playing the fiddle since the age of 8. He received lessons for about a year, and from then on taught himself. Although his early musical influences were the great Irish players, Matt’s interests soon expanded to a variety of styles, including Shetland, Bluegrass and Classical and lately also Latin American and Jazz. He has performed at the Shetland Fiddle and Accordion Festival in 2002 and 2003 and has been invited back for 2005. Matt has given performances throughout Ireland as a traditional player and in the past year as well, has performed at the Harvey’s Point Summer Cabaret. In Chicago he has shared the stage with great players such as John Daly, Tommy Peoples and Dennis Cahill. In 2004 Matt formed his own 22-piece orchestra which has been receiving standing ovations wherever they performed. Matt has released two CD’s: ‘Flames before the Fire’ in 1999 which included two of his own compositions and ‘Goldfiddle’ in 2003 – which features three pieces that he composed himself. This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear Matt Mc Granaghan perform Solo with accompaniment on piano by Gordon Speer from Co. Tyrone. For anyone who appreciates an eclectic selection of music, this is an evening not to be missed!
