Glenties Notes on November 17th 2005

On Saturday 29th October 2005 Olivia Mc Nelis and David Kelch were married in the Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh. Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Olivia is a daughter of Willie and Teresa Mc Nelis, Narin Road, Glenties and David is a son of Paul and Maria Kelch, Dublin. Her father gave the bride away and her sister Janice Mc Nelis and her friend, Olivia Oates (Hegarty) attended her. Jason Maddock was bestman and David Gaffney was groomsman, both friends of the groom. Readings were by Sarah Kelch, sister of the groom and his Godmother, Mary Bates. Karen Mc Devitt, cousin of the bride and two of her friends, Eileen Rafferty and Áine Mc Kelvey read Prayers of the Faithful. The groom’s mother and two cousins of the bride, Patricia and Rosie Mc Devitt brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by Jim Rafferty, Shauna Ward and Eileen Rafferty. The reception was held in The Lake House Hotel, Clooney Portnoo and the honeymoon was spent in Florida.

Congratulations to Ann Marie and Seamus Hunter, Meenagrubby, Glenties on the birth recently of their third child, a baby sister for Shane and Ryan. Ann Marie is a daughter of Danny and Mary Mc Dermott, Meenagrubby.

Congratulations to Siobhan and Tyrone Cooper, USA on the birth recently of their first child, a baby boy. Siobhan is a daughter of Nora and the late Jack O’Donnell, Ard Patrick, Glenties.

Congratulations to Martina Mc Dermott who graduated from the Tourism College, Killybegs with a Certificate in Culinary Arts. Martina is a daughter of Danny and Mary Mc Dermott, Meenagrubby, Glenties.

Congratulations to Deirdre O’ Donnell, who graduated recently from NUI Galway with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She is currently studying for a Higher Diploma in Applied Microbiology. Deirdre is a daughter of Patrick and Mary Rose O’ Donnell, Tullyard Road, Glenties.

The Sacrament of Confirmation for the Parish of Iniskeel will be administered in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Sunday 2nd April 2006 at 11.00a.m.

The Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Party will take place on Sunday 4th December in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties. The afternoon will begin with Mass at 3.00p.m. which will be followed by dinner and entertainment. An open invitation is extended to all the Senior Citizens of the parish.

Congratulations to Sharon and Niall Gallagher, Upper Kilraine, Glenties on the birth recently of their first child, a baby girl.

Congratulations to Liz Boyle, The Rock, Glenties and Patrick Bonner, Burtonport, who were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 5th November.

Congratulations and Best Wishes for many more years to Dr. Mc Closkey and Margaret Boyle, Glenties, who recently celebrated their 90th Birthdays in Strangriff Nursing Home, Stranorlar.

There will be an open meeting in Mullanmore School on Thursday evening 10th November at 8.00p.m. to discuss the celebrations for the Centenary of the opening of the Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh.

On Thursday evening 10th November at 8.00p.m. there will be a Rural Women’s Get Together meeting in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties. If you are interested in Crafts, Knitting, Crochet, Embroidery, Rug Making, Quilting, Lace, Painting, Pottery, Cooking, Flowers, Singing, Dancing or just chatting, come along. All ladies welcome.

The death took place in Dublin of Nan Harkin, (nee Keeney) Mill Road, Glenties on Sunday 20th October 2005. Her remains were brought to her home on Tuesday evening and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Wednesday. Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by a nephew Martin Mc Gettigan and a niece Eithne Harkin. Nan’s son Peter and her granddaughter Sarah Harkin read Prayers of the Faithful. Her Goddaughters Yvonne Crawford and Maureen Wright brought the Gifts to the Altar and her son Brendan gave the Eulogy. Music and singing was by Cliona Heena. Burial took place in Killybegs. She is survived by her husband Charlie, sons Peter, Brendan and Charles and daughter Marina, grandchildren, sisters, Mena, Glenties, Mamie, Sally and Nora in England, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her two brothers, John and Conal Keeney predeceased her. Nan, a native of Tullyhoniver, Glenties spent the most part of her life in England and only returned to Glenties about six years ago.

The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Friday 4th November 2005 of Maggie Gallagher (nee Mc Kelvey), Stranaglough, Glenties. Her remains were brought to her home later that day and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Sunday. Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by her nephew Peter Mc Kelvey and grandniece Danielle Kelly. Music was by Sr. Immaculata on the organ. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Her husband Michael predeceased Maggie 27 years ago. Her brothers Paddy, Peter, James and Neil, sisters, Bridget, Rose and Mary also predeceased her. Maggie is survived by nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. She was the last surviving member of the family of Peter and Rose Mc Kelvey of Drimconcooshe, Glenties and was ninety-one years old in June of this year. Maggie knitted Aran Sweaters up until she went into hospital a few weeks ago.

On Saturday 22nd October 2005 Patrick Roarty and Jennifer Lyons were married in St. John the Baptist Church, Kinsale. Patrick is a son of Fergus and Breege Roarty, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties and Jennifer is a daughter of Brendan and Phyllis Lyons, Ballincollig. Fr. Myles Mc Sweeney officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Her father gave the bride away and her sisters Anne and Laura Lyons and Maria Quaid attended her. Jim Mc Guinness, friend of the groom was bestman and his two brothers Raymond and Michael Roarty were groomsmen. Sarah Carroll was flowergirl and Tiernan Roarty was pageboy. Readings were by Laura Lyons and Helen Roarty. Sinead, Maria, Tony and Damien read Prayers of the Faithful. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in Actons Hotel Kinsale and the honeymoon was spent in South Africa.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Ann Conaghan, Main St. Glenties on the death of her aunt, Maureen Reid, (nee Mc Cafferty, Glencoe), which took place last week in Kilkenny.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Sonnie Hanlon, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent and Richard Hanlon, Tullyard on the death recently of their sister, Cassie Elliott, Lettermacaward; also to her nieces, nephews and all her relatives and friends.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives of Jim Molloy, formerly of Grayffy, Glenties who died recently in Canada.

Glenties Notes on November 3rd 2005

The annual Witches Fancy Dress Ball that was held last Sunday night in the Highlands Hotel has been a great success as usual. A lot of effort is put into the costumes and this year was no exception. The Glenties Traders Association would like to thank all those who contributed to this success. The money raised will go towards the Christmas Lights, which cost approx. €7,000. Fund raising Boxes for the Christmas Lights will be placed in business premises in the town in the next few weeks so please give generously as we all look forward to the town being lit up for Christmas.

Due to uncontrollable circumstances the new swimming term will not commence until Monday November 21st. The list of names will be posted in Brennan’s video shop after the Halloween break.

Congratulations to Bríd and Joe Gavigan, Narin Road, Glenties on the birth of their third child, a baby brother for Kevin and Aodhan.

Congratulations to Olivia Mc Nelis, Narin Road, Glenties and David Kelch, Dublin, who were married in the Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Saturday last.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Frank Mc Ghee and family, Doohil, Ardara on the death of Frank’s mother, Gracie Mc Ghee, Ard-Conal, Ardara who died on Monday 17th October 2005; also to her nieces and nephews in the Glenties and Fintown area and to all her relatives and friends.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Maggie Keeney and family, Tullyhoniver, Glenties on the death of Maggie’s brother, Davy O’ Donnell, Drimloughdrid, Lettermacaward, which took place on Friday 27th October; also to his family, all his relatives and friends.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Charlie Harkin, Mill Road, Glenties and family on the death, at the weekend, of his wife Nan (nee Keeney); also to her sister, Mena Mc Gettigan, Mill Road to the Keeney families and to all her relatives and friends.

Best wishes to our senior team who meet Mayobridge, Co. Down in the Quarter Final of the Ulster Club Championship, on Sunday next in Newry.

A 25 Card Drive will take place in Mc Loone’s Bar, Maas, at 8.30p.m. on Friday 11th November and Friday 18th November. All proceeds go to Kilkenny National School Funds.
