Glenties Notes on 28th February 2006

The death took place peacefully on Thursday 23rd February 2006, at the home of her daughter in Ballindrait, Lifford of Annie Mc Gowan, Ardconnell, Glenties. Her remains were brought to Ardconnell later that evening and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday. Fr. Paul Gallagher C.C. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass. Burial took place afterwards in the New Graveyard. Annie was 93 years old last September. She is survived by her daughter Mary, son-in-law Bill Mc Nulty, grandchildren, James and Clare, sisters Maggie Glynn, Ard Patrick, Glenties, Kathleen O’Keefe and Agnes Fowler, England, nephews, Michael Glynn, Glenties and Denis O’Keefe, England, nieces, Maria Bizzell and Teresa Hamble, England, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband Willie predeceased her about thirty years ago. Her sister Bridie and brother Paddy also predeceased her.

The Service for Women’s World Day of Prayer takes place in St. Conal’s Church, Kilclooney on Friday 3rd March at 7.30p.m. It has been prepared this year by the women of South Africa on the theme of “Change in Our Time”.

If interested in a jiving class for beginners, please leave your name at Diver’s Newsagents, Ardara. A programme of five weeks classes for beginners in Jiving takes place in the Nesbitt Arms Hotel, Ardara from Wednesday 1st March at 8.00p.m. The fee is 20 Euro for five weeks. Come along on the night or contact Majella in Diver’s Newsagents.

Salsa classes will commence in Glenties on a Friday night if there are enough people interested in attending. Classes will be from 7p.m. – 8.30p.m. The venue will be announced later and the cost will be 5 Euro per class. The Donegal Branch of the Alzheimer Society wish to thank everyone who contributed to the recent Church Gate Collection which amounted to €743.00.

The Raphoe Diocesan Pioneer Council are once again, in keeping with the Aim of their Association, which is the Promotion of Sobriety and Temperance, organising their “No Thanks Lenten Campaign” where a person makes a private commitment to abstain from Alcohol for Lent and say the short prayer which is on the special cards available in the church. Please take one.

The Raphoe Diocesan Pilgrimage to Fatima led by Bishop Philip Boyce takes place from 4th July for 7 nights. The flight departs from Derry Airport. Full board in Hotel Avenida costs E 719 + E 25 insurance. See notice board in Church for full details.

A five-week course on the challenges of PARENTING ALONE starts on Tuesday 21st February in the Comprehensive School from 7.30p.m. – 9.30p.m. The cost is 2 Euro per night. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to look at the issues involved in parenting alone, and a chance to support each other with expert help.

A five-week course exploring the joys and the challenges of parenting teenagers starts in the Comprehensive School on Tuesday 21st February from 7.30p.m. – 9.30p.m. The cost per night is 2 Euro. Topics like improving communication, laying down boundaries, problem solving, will be explored in a supportive manner. The 11.00a.m. Mass in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties next Sunday 26th February will be celebrated as the Family Mass.

Congratulations to young footballers Darragh Gallagher and Eoin Wade who have been selected for the U/ 17 Ireland Compromise Rules Team going to Australia at Easter.

A Dance and Fiddle Weekend organised by Belfast Set Dancing & Traditional Music Society will be held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties from Friday 17th – Sunday 19th February. There will be a meeting of the team preparing the February Family Mass in the Hotel on Monday 13th February at 9.00p.m. More parents are needed to help with organising the Family Masses. If you are interested contact Maria McInnes or come to the meeting on Monday 13th.

A gent’s gold watch with engraving on the back of the watch was lost after 11.00a.m. Mass in Glenties on Sunday 29th January. It is of great sentimental value. If anyone has found the watch would you please ring 9544018.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife and family of Jim Rafferty, (St. Connell’s Church choir master), who died in Letterkenny Hospital on Monday 6th February.
