Glenties Notes on 25th June 2007

Congratulations to June (nee Conefry) and Hugo Gilroy, Alter, Glenties on the birth of their third child in Letterkenny Hospital on Wednesday 20th June 2007, a baby sister for Aidan and Emily.

Medjugorje Peace Mass will be celebrated in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Thursday 28th June at 8.00p.m.  Everyone is welcome.

Udarás na Gaeltachta in partnership with the local development committee in Edeninfagh will shortly be undertaking a survey on the Irish language in the parish.  A bilingual questionnaire will be delivered to each house in the area and will be collected within a week.  Your co-operation in this project would be greatly appreciated.

The Church Gate Collection for the Irish Cancer Society, taken up recently, amounted to 1,245.50 Euro.  Thank you to those who gave a donation.

Glenties Playschool and Afterschool would like to thank all the people who donated money (some several times) at the bucket and the Church Gate Collection.  The amount raised was 3,483.47 Euro.  We would also like to thank all the parents who gave their time.

The death took place in Liverpool on Sunday 10th June 2007 of Gemma Mc Loone, formerly of Mill Road, Glenties.  Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 16th.  Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties assisted by Fr. Kevin O’Doherty P.P. Newtowncunningham concelebrated RequiemMass.  Readings were by Gemma’s brother Donal and her nephew Arthur Mc Loone.  Susan, Gemma, Aidan Mc Loone and Mary Carson, nieces and nephew read Prayers of the Faithful.  Singing was by niece, Deirdre Mc Loone.  Burial took place in the New Graveyard.  Gemma is survived by sisters, Eilis Herron, Mill Road, Glenties, Anne in England, brothers, Seamie, Newtowncunningham, Donal, Letterkenny, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.  Her sister, Maura and brother Art, predeceased her.

On Saturday 16th June 2007 Patricia Earley and Brendan Kennedy were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties.  Fr. Paul Gallagher officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass.  Patricia is a daughter of John and Anne Earley, Mullinard, Glenties and Brendan is a son of Charlie and Kathleen Kennedy, Dunkineely.  Her father gave the bride away and her sister, Collette Earley and her cousin, Pamela Kelly attended her.  James Breslin, friend of the groom was bestman and the groom’s brother, Emmet was groomsman.  Darcy Kennedy, niece of the groom was flowergirl.  Readings were by Shane Gillespie, friend of the groom and the groom’s brother, Ronan Kennedy.  Sean Earley, brother of the bride, Charlene Kelly, cousin of the bride, Grainne Kennedy, sister of the groom and Brian Mc Cabe, cousin of the bride read Prayers of the Faithful.  The mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar.  Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’Donnell.  The reception was held in The Lake House Hotel, Clooney, Portnoo and the honeymoon was spent in the Isle of Man.

The Car Wash, which was postponed on Saturday 9th June, in aid of The Children’s Play Area in Glenties, will now take place on Saturday 23rd June at Lower Main Street, Glenties from 10.00a.m.  Your continued support for this much needed facility for our community is very much appreciated.

 

Congratulations to Dermot Campbell, who recently was the recipient of the Nortel Prize for Electronic Engineering at NUI Galway.  Dermot, a second year PhD student at the University is a son of Con and Kathleen Campbell, Lacklea, Glenties. 

 

Congratulations to Aisling Corcoran, who has been chosen as the 2007 ‘Gaeltacht Mary’ for this year’s ‘Mary from Dungloe Festival’.  Aisling is the daughter of Gerry and Bridget Corcoran, Meenahalla, Glenties.

 

Congratulations to Derek Brennan who graduated recently from John Jay College, New York at a passing out ceremony in MadisonSquareGarden, to become a member of the New York Police Department.  Derek is a son of Breege and the late Con Brennan, Shallogans.

 

Congratulations to Maire Mc Loone, who has been named British Female Inventor of the Year at the British Female Inventors and Innovators (BFIIN) awards ceremony held in the Café Royal in London.  Dr. Mc Loone, a Lecturer and Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow at Queen’s Electronics, Communications and Information Technology Institute (ECIT), received this very prestigious award after inventing a security device, which protects the public from cyber criminals, such as hackers, and also helps identify thieves.  The award is the latest success this year for Dr. Mc Loone.  In January she was announced the winner of the national WES (Women’s Engineering Society) award.  She has previously won the Science, Engineering and Technology Student of the Year 1999 and the Vodafone award for her research, at the Young Engineer for Britain Awards.  Maire is a daughter of John and Kathleen Mc Loone, Cornagrillagh, Glenties.

 

Congratulations to Patricia Earley, Mullinard, Glenties and Brendan Kennedy. Dunkineely, who were married in Glenties on Saturday last.

 

On Saturday 9th June 2007 Emma Mc Hugh and Paul Quinn were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties.  Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass.  Emma is a daughter of James and Margaret Mc Hugh, Drimnacrosh, Glenties and Paul is a son of Gerard and Eileen Quinn, Manorcunningham.  Her father gave the bride away and her friends, Kelly Culbertfon and Sarah Carroll and her sisters, Karen Mc Hugh and Collette Carbery attended her.  Sean Quinn, brother of the groom was bestman.  Another brother, Gavin Quinn and cousins Martin and Mark Mc Grotty were groomsmen.  Niece of the bride, Rachel Mc Hugh and Saoirse Carroll, friend, were flowergirls.  James Carbery, nephew of the bride and Jordan Boyle, cousin of the groom were pageboys.  Readings were by Declan Mc Hugh, brother of the bride and Donna Marie Mc Grotty, cousin of the groom.  Rosemary, Pauline and Edel Kennedy, Gerard Quinn and Paul Mc Hugh read Prayers of the Faithful.  The mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar.  Singing was by Cliona Heena, accompanied by Nessa Molloy on the organ.  The reception was held in The Raddison Hotel, Letterkenny and the honeymoon was spent in Mexico.

 

Sincere sympathy is extended to the sisters and brothers and all the relatives and friends of Gemma Mc Loone, (formerly Mill Road, Glenties), who died in Liverpool last week.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife and family of Tony Darcy, Clontarf, Dublin who died at his home in the early hours of Wednesday 12th June 2007; also to all the relatives and friends.  Tony’s wife, Christine, is a daughter of Sadie and the late Danny Sweeney, Glenties.

 

The annual Church Gate Collection for Care of the Aged will be taken up, by the Care of the Aged Committee, before all the Masses next weekend ~ Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June.

The Church Gate Collection for Multiple Sclerosis ~ Donegal Branch amounted to 805.00 Euro.  Thank you to everyone who made a donation.

 

The 11a.m. Mass on Sunday 24th June will be celebrated as the Family Mass.

 

Mass will be celebrated in the New Graveyard, Glenties on Sunday 22nd July at 3.00p.m.

Mass will be celebrated in Edeninfagh Graveyard on Sunday 12th August at 3.00p.m.

 

An application has been made to Donegal County Council for a playground for Glenties under the Playground Programme 2007 – 2010.  We are hoping that our Council representatives in the Glenties Electoral Area will look favourably on our application.  It is vital that we are included in this programme as the next application would not be until 2011.  As a community we must make every effort to lobby our representatives in the Council for this most essential need in our town.  The successful applicants will be informed on 31st July 2007.

On Saturday 2nd June 2007 Teresa Mc Dermott and Philip Boyle were married in the Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh.  Fr. Paul Gallagher C.C. Glenties officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass.  Teresa is a daughter of Danny and Mary Mc Dermott, Meenagrubby, Glenties and Philip is a son of Philip and Rita Boyle, Dooey, Lettermacaward.  Her father gave the bride away and her sisters, Martina Hanlon, Sheila Harold and Ann Marie Hunter and the groom’s sister, Patricia Boyle attended her.  Michael Boyle, brother of the groom was bestman and three friends, Patrick and Daniel Elliott and Patrick Mc Hugh were groomsmen.  Nieces of the bride, Marie Hunter and Tanya Harold were flowergirls and Shane Hunter and Nathan Hanlon, nephews of the bride were pageboys.  Ring bearer was Shane Hunter.  Readings were by Pauline Boyle, sister of the groom and Michael Mc Dermott, brother of the bride.  James and Danny Mc Dermott, brothers of the bride, Ann Marie Mc Ginley, cousin and Ryan Hunter, nephew of the bride and a friend Gillian Foster read Prayers of the Faithful.  The mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar.  Music and singing was by Joseph O’Donnell.  The reception was held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties and the honeymoon is being spent in Florida.

 

Congratulations to Ann Marie and Seamus Hunter, Meenagrubby on the birth recently of their fourth child, a baby brother (Owen) for Ryan, Shane and Marie.  Ann Marie is a daughter of Danny and Mary Mc Dermott, Meenagrubby.

 

The official opening of the newly refurbished St. Riaghan’s NationalSchool takes place on Friday 15th June 2007 at 11a.m.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

 

The Car Wash which was due to take place on Saturday 9th June in aid of the proposed children’s public play area in Glenties had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.  We hope that this fundraising event will take place in the next few weeks.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public for their support in the past and look forward to their continued support in the future

 

Congratulations to Emma Mc Hugh, Drimnacrosh and Paul Quinn, Letterkenny who were married in Glenties on Saturday last.

 

The death took place in Stirling, Scotland on Monday 4th June2007, of Kathleen Travers (nee Mc Guigan, Daraghan) and burial took place in Stirling on Friday 8th June.  She is survived by two daughters, one son and one brother, Edward Mc Guigan, Daraghan to whom sincere sympathy is extended.  Her husband, Joseph, a native of Donegal Town and her daughter Madeline predeceased her, also her brother, Denis, who died in Australia about five years ago.

 

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland wishes to thank all those people who supported their Coffee Morning in Glenties Day Centre. The amount raised was 273.60 Euro.  Thank you for your support.

 

The recent collection for the West Coast Cormorants Swimming Club amounted to 675.92 Euro.  Thanks to all who contributed.

Congratulations to all the students in St. Columba’s Comprehensive School, Glenties who received awards at their annual Presentation Dance in the Highlands Hotel on Friday 25th May 2007, especially Claire Reid, Tullyard Road, Glenties and Ciaran Boyle, Glen Road, Glenties who got the ‘Student of the Year’ awards.

Congratulations also to the Transition Year Students who raised 2,700 Euro for the Children of Peru.

 

The annual Cake, Book and Video Sale in aid of the 6th Class Activity Tour will be held in the Community Centre, Glenties on Saturday evening 16th June after 7.30p.m. Mass.  Your support is greatly appreciated.  Donations of cakes, books and videos are very welcome.

 

The Corpus Christi Procession is a continuation of the Celebration of the Eucharist.  Immediately after Mass, the Sacred Host, consecrated during the Mass, is borne out of the Church to allow the Christian faithful to “make public profession of faith and worship of the Most Blessed Sacrament”.  At the end of the 11.00a.m. Mass on Sunday 10th June we will process from the Church to the Grotto for Benediction (weather permitting).  The people who are usually involved in the carrying of the canopy are asked to make themselves available, as well as those who usually steward the procession.  The First Holy Communion Children are invited to walk in the Procession in their First Holy Communion Dress.

The annual registration of children who wish to attend Preschool / Afterschool for new term ~September ’07 ~ June ’08 will take place on Friday 8th June at 8 o’clock in the Pre-school Building.  Parents who wish to enrol their child / children must attend on that evening to secure a place for their child and must bring their child / children’s immunisation record card with them. A registration fee of 20 Euro per family is also payable on the evening. 

 

A carwash is being held in aid of GlentiesFunPark / Playground on Saturday 9th June at Lower Main Street Glenties from 10.00a.m. Your continued support for this much needed facility for our community is very much appreciated.  Any volunteers willing to help wash cars for 1 hour on this day would also be welcome.  If you can help please contact Martin on 086-8656312 before Friday 8th June.
