Glenties Notes 25th September 2007

Congratulations to Mary Mc Hugh, Narin Road, Glenties and Gerard Boyle, Bruckless who were married in Glenties on Saturday last.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Maggie Glynn, Ard Patrick, Glenties and family on the death of Maggie’s sister, Agnes Fowler (nee Devenney, Loughcrillan, Glenties), which took place in London on Friday 21st September 2007.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Gracie Gildea, Ardconnell, Glenties on the death of her son, John which took place in England on Saturday 22nd September 2007; also to his wife and family, his brother, Seamus, sister, Mary and to all the relatives and friends.

The death took place in Dublin last week of Billy Farrell, Narin Road, Glenties (originally Dublin).  Fr. Paul Gallagher C.C. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 22nd September.  Members of his family did the Readings and Prayers of the Faithful.  Music was by Pat and John F. O’ Donnell.  Burial took place in the New Graveyard.  Sincere sympathy is extended to his daughter, Lisa Coughlan, Narin Road, Glenties, son Robert Farrell, Mullinard, Glenties, to his wife and the other members of his family and to all his relatives and friends.

The organising committee of the ‘Fundraising Event for Ethiopia’ together with Maria Rafferty, the VSO volunteer, wish to thank all who contributed to a most successful night in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Friday last 21st September.  We are very grateful to those who sent in gifts for the raffle, the individuals and businesses who made financial contributions and to all who attended on the night.  Special thanks to the Highlands Hotel, Frank McGhee, The Bonner Cannon School of Dancers, Tanya Mc Cole, Kevin Herron and Michael Maloney, also Tara Connaghan and friend, all of whom provided their services free of charge.  The total raised on the night was 4,500 Euro.  Maria was delighted to receive a further 2,500 E from Narin Portnoo Golf Club, 2,000 E of which was raised at the annual summer barbeque and 500 E from the Ladies Committee.  We all wish Maria every success and happiness in the challenges that await her in Ethiopia on her arrival there this week.

Michael Fitzgerald, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, Glenties will be running in the Dublin City Marathon on October 29th.  This will be Michael’s 27th marathon.  He is running in aid of the Alzheimer Society of Donegal, which is a very worthy cause.  Sponsorship cards are in the shops.  Please give him your support – we have only to put our hands in our pockets – Michael has to do the running!

An evening Yoga Class will be run in the Community Centre on Wednesday evenings from 7.30p.m. – 9.00p.m.  It will be a six eek course and the cost is 55 Euro.  Registration is on the first night.

Glenties Parent and Toddler Group has resumed in the Day Centre, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent on Thursday mornings from 10.30a.m. until 12.30p.m. Grannies, Child-Minders, New Parents are all welcome.

Congratulations to Annie O’Donnell, Meenahalla, Glenties who was 100 years on September 6th.  Annie is in good health and will be celebrating with her family this weekend.  Best Wishes Annie for many more years among us.

On Saturday 8th September 2007 Conor Mc Closkey and Angela Wilkinson were married in St. Eunan’s Cathedral, Letterkenny.  Fr. Paddy Dunne officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass.  Conor is a son of Zita and the late Seamus Mc Closkey, Main St. Glenties and Angela is a daughter of Patrick and Madeline Wilkinson, New Mills, Letterkenny.  Her father gave the bride away her friends, Julie Mc Fadden, Aoife Dalton and Amy Rooney were her bridesmaids.  John mc Closkey, brother of the groom was bestman and his other brothers, Donal and Joseph were groomsmen.  Alana Mc Nelis, niece of the groom was a flowergirl.  Conor and Aidan Wilkinson, brothers of the groom were ushers.  Readings were by Mary Mc Nelis, sister of the groom and Bríd Rooney, aunt of the bride.  Pauric O’Donnell and Feena Mc Ateer read Prayers of the Faithful.  The mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar.  Music was by Josie O’Donnell, Kathleen Forde and Ciara Doherty.  The reception was held in Harvey’s Point Country Hotel, Lough Eske and the honeymoon is being spent in San Francisco and Las Vegas.

Congratulations to Bried and Michael Mc Ginty, Co. Monaghan on the birth recently of their first child, a baby boy (Noah).  Bried is a daughter of Paddy and Bridie Doherty, Mill Road, Glenties.

Maria Rafferty, recently retired teacher from the Comprehensive School, Glenties leaves this community on September 26th to work as a volunteer with Voluntary Services Overseas in Ethiopia.  We admire her courage and wish her well in her new undertaking.  Volunteers for VSO are requested to make a contribution to the work of VSO.  A committee has been formed to support Maria and we are holding a Community Fundraising Night in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Friday 21st September ~ 10p.m. – 1a.m.  Music is by Frank McGhee and Guests.  Tickets are 10 Euro.  A series of raffles will be held during the evening and we would welcome prizes or contributions for same.  Your generosity could make a big difference to the people of Ethiopia. Items for the raffle or any donations can be handed in to Olive’s Shoe Shop, Francis Brennan’s or care of Mary Regan at the Comprehensive School.  Committee members are Anne Gallagher, Olive Mc Kelvey, Brenda Reid, Mary Ita Boyle and Kathleen Brennan.  Thanking you in anticipation.  Tickets will be on sale in Olive’s & Mc Glinchey’s, Glenties, Inan Morgan’s, Portnoo, Diver’s Newsagents & Greenhouse Shop, Ardara and Mc Geehan’s, Fintown.

Congratulations to the Glenties Tidy Towns Committee on the high achievement in the National Competition and to Ard Mc Gill in winning both the North West and National Title in the Landscape Category.

The Public and National School Gym committee would like to thank everyone for their support over the Harvest Fair week.  We especially would like to thank two talented young men, Patrick and Christopher Byrne for making a model of the new gym building for the float parade.  We would also like to thank our sponsors – Filligans, Glenties (26” LCD TV), which was won by Una Boyle, Glenties, Motorminder, Donegal Town (50Euro voucher), which was won by Emily Bonner, Glenties, Cannon’s Service Station, Glenties (50 Euro voucher), which was won by D. Glenties Notes on 10th September 2007

Congratulations to Lisa Mc Devitt (Doochary Queen) who was selected in the Limelight on Sunday night as this year’s Glenties Harvest Fair Queen.  Congratulations also to Alana Molloy, Glenties who was selected as this year’s Teen Queen. 

Fiddle and Guitar Lessons will recommence in the Play School / After School Building on the Glen Road, Glenties at 10.30a.m. on Saturday 15th September.  For further information contact Ernan at 074 9541037.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Donal Gallagher, Narin Road, Glenties on the death of his brother, Francie Gallagher, Stranorlar, (formerly Doobin, Glenties) which took place last week in Stranorlar; also to all the relatives and friends.  Francie was 99 years old.

The local Lifeboat committee would like to thank all those who helped to make their recent Raft Race such a success.  Firstly, we would like to thank the teams who took part in the race, provided the entertainment and who raised a great deal of money, those who supported on the day, the Gardaí for their help, Michael Mc Laughlin and Frankie Mc Hugh for the use of the field, Mr. and Mrs. Capper for supplying the power, Frank Connaghan for the use of his lorries, local residents and boat owners for their co-operation, those who manned the safety boats, the judges, Phil Mc Grenaghan and Denis Wilson and M.C. Jack Kennedy.  Thanks also to Mary Keown, who took care of the registration, to Tommy Barrett and Joseph Molloy for their contribution, to the publicans and business people of Glenties, Ardara, Narin and Portnoo for all their help and donations and to everyone who helped in any way.  The day was a great success and the money raised will help save lives at sea.

Congratulations to Emily and Hugh Breslin, Glen Road, Glenties on the birth recently of their second child, a baby brother (Daniel) for Darragh.

Congratulations to Maria and Billy MacInnes, Derries, Glenties on the birth recently of their fourth child, a baby sister (Ruth) for Ellie, Lia and Wills.

The death took place at her home on Wednesday 29th August 2007 of Mary Alice Mc Kelvey, Currien, Fintown (nee Spillane, Glenties).  Her remains were brought to St. Colmcille’s Church, Fintown on Saturday morning.  Fr. Cunningham C.C. Fintown assisted by Fr. Eamon McLaughlin concelebrated Requiem Mass.  Readings were by her nephew, Gavin Spillane and her son Stephen.  Mairead Mc Kelvey, Carol Mc Nelis, Molly Mc Nelis and Damien Mc Kelvey read Prayers of the Faithful.  Her sisters, Sheila, Anne, Evelyn and Dympna brought the Gifts to the Altar.  Music and singing was by the local church choir, of whom she was a member, Mary Alice’s sister, Margaret, Isobel Curran, Tara Connaghan and Fiona Quinn.  Burial took place in the adjoining Graveyard.  Mary Alice is survived by her husband, Connie, sons, Stephen, Thomas and Conal, sisters, Sheila, Margaret, Anne, Evelyn and Dympna, brothers, P. J. and Christy, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, Aidan and Ciara, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Acla Park Fintown – Field Development Car Draw will take place this Friday 14th September in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties.  Doors will open at 9.00 p.m. and Draw will take place at 12 Midnight. The first prize is a Honda Jazz.  There are nine other prizes including a Flat Screen T.V, Weekend for 2 in Galway, 1,000 litres of heating oil etc.  Tickets (20 Euro) are on sale up until night of draw.  Music is by Erin’s Own.  Everyone is welcome.

A Prayer Meeting for Teenagers and Adults will be held in the Day Centre, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, Glenties every Tuesday at 8.00p.m.

Congratulations to Joe and Bridget Mc Glinchey, Main St. Glenties, who are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary this week.

Congratulations also to John Joe and Mary Melly, Main St. Glenties who celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary a few weeks ago.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family, relatives and friends of Mary Alice Mc Kelvey, Currien, Fintown, who died at her home on Wednesday 29th August.  Sincere sympathy is extended to Tony Boyle, Ard Patrick, Glenties, Margaret O’Kane, Cappry, Ballybofey, on the death of their uncle, James Boyle, (formerly of Mullanmore, Glenties), who died in Scotland last week; also to all the relatives and friends.

A Table Quiz in aid of Naomh Conaill Ladies GAA Team will be held in the Highlands Hotel on Monday at 9.00p.m. Teams of 4 ~ 40 Euro.

This year’s annual Harvest Fair Festival will be officially opened on Friday 7th September at 8.00p.m.  Battle of the Bands takes place in the Limelight later that evening in Studio 2 and Teenage Non-Alcoholic Disco in Studio 1. There will be music in the pubs and on the street and fun and games.  Saturday is Kids Day.  Naomh Conaill Golf Classic also takes place on Saturday.  On Sunday 9th Glenties Brass Band will play on Main Street from 3.30 – 4.00p.m.  The Band and Float Parade is at 4.00p.m. and the Harvest Fair Queen will be chosen at the Limelight Disco that night.  At 6p.m. on Monday a Wheel Changing Competition will take place on the street and it’s Kids Movie Nite at 6p.m. in the Highlands Hotel followed by a Table Quiz at 9p.m.  Wednesday 12th is the Harvest Fair Day with stalls of every kind lining the street.  Come along and enjoy the fun.

Parky the magician will perform his magic show in the Limelight, Glenties on Sunday 9th September at 5.15 p.m. after the Parade.  Admission is 5 Euro.

A weekend of workshops and dancing will take place in the Highland Hotel, Glenties from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th September.  On Friday night there will be a Ceili from 9.30p.m. ~ 12.30a.m.  Music is by Orial Ceili Band (Armagh) and admission is 8 Euro.  Refreshments will be served.  Workshops are on Saturday 11a.m. ~ 1p.m. and 2p.m. ~ 4p.m. Maggie Pickins with Joe Mc Guigan (Derry), Sets and Ceili with Clement Gallagher.    On Saturday night there is a Barn Dance from 9p.m. ~ 12.30a.m.  Music is by John Cannon & Michael Coyle and admission is 8 Euro.  Refreshments will be served.  The workshop on Sunday is from 11a.m. ~ 1p.m. ~ 2 Hand Donegal Dances with Anne Connaghan and Clement Gallagher.  Admission to workshops is 5 Euro per session or full weekend ticket can be purchased for 25 Euro.  There will be a Closing Barn Dance on Sunday from 3p.m. ~ 6p.m.  Music is by Country Traditions and admission is 8 Euro.  For further information contact Clement Gallagher at 074 9737142 or Anne Connaghan at 087 0987991.

On Friday 14th September a fundraising event will take place in the Dolmen Centre in aid of the North West Wellness Centre Breast Screening Facility.  The night’s entertainment will include comedy, music, stories and fashion from the Autumn / Winter Greenhouse range of fashion.  This is a charity well worth supporting so try and keep Friday 14th free and come and enjoy a super evening of entertainment, while also supporting a great cause. 

A Safe Pass Course will be held in the Dolmen Centre on Thursday 20th September.  The fee is 100 Euro.  For booking please contact 087 2458839.

A Talk and Presentation by Fr. Martin – a renowned expert on the “Shroud of Turin” will take place in the Dolmen Centre on Thursday 13th September at 8p.m.  Fr. Martin is from Amplefort Abbey in York and devotes his time to the promotion of the “wonders” of the Shroud.

Children’s Ballet Classes will resume in the Dolmen Centre on Monday 17th September.  For registration and further details please call Anna at 087 7928014.
