Glenties Notes 31st October 2007

The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Wednesday 24th October 2007 of Eilis Herron, (nee Mc Loone) Mill Road, Glenties.  Her remains were brought to her home on Thursday afternoon and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday morning.  Fr. Pat Prendergast celebrated Requiem Mass at 11.00a.m.  Readings were by Eilis’s nephew and her brother, Donal.  Prayers of the Faithful were read by other nieces and nephews.  Burial took place in the New Graveyard.  Her husband Patsy predeceased her two years ago and her sister Gemma died in June of this year.  Her sister Maura and her brother Art also predeceased her.  She is survived by two brothers, Seamie, Newtowncunningham, Donal, Letterkenny, one sister, Anne, England, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. 

On Saturday 20th October 2007 Noreen Mc Guinness and Kevin Mc Naney were married in The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh, Glenties.  Fr. Denis Quinn assisted by Fr. Pat Prendergast officiated and concelebrated Nuptial Mass.  Noreen is a daughter of Jim and Maureen Mc Guinness, Ard Patrick, Glenties and Kevin is a son of Claire and the late Brian Mc Naney, Moneymore, Co. Derry.  Her father gave the bride away and she was attended by her friend, Anne Edel Ward.  The groom’s brother, Lawrence was bestman.  Readings were by Noreen’s brother Jim and Kevin’s brother-in-law, Patrick.  Prayers of the Faithful were read by Charles, nephew of the bride and Kayleigh, niece of the groom.  The Gifts were brought to the Altar by Paul, nephew of the bride and Jade, niece of the groom.  Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’ Donnell.  The reception was held in The Lake House Hotel, Clooney and the honeymoon is being spent in Rome and Florence.

Congratulations to Aisling Bonner, Straboy and Conor O’ Neill, Westport who were married in Glenties last Saturday.

The recent collection taken up in aid of the I.S.P.C.C. amounted to € 802. Thanks to all those who supported this worthy cause.

Anyone participating in the Scoil Mhuire Christmas Shoe Box Appeal for children in need should hand in their boxes on Monday 5th or Tuesday 6th November.  Donations will also be accepted.

Congratulations to Con and Bríd Wright, Loughnabraddan, Fintown, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently.

The annual Fireworks Display will take place on Narin Strand on Saturday 27th October at 9.00 p.m.  Contributions towards the cost of the fireworks will be welcome on the night.

A Pub Quiz in aid of the Ladies GAA will be held in Molloy’s Bar, Glenties on Friday 26th October at 9.00p.m.  Everyone is welcome and your support would be much appreciated.

It’s that time of year again when the witches and ghosts and all sorts of creatures will be out and about. The annual Halloween Ball takes place in The Limelight, Glenties on Sunday 28th October.  Music is by Keltic Kads and admission is 10 Euro.  Doors will open at 10 p.m.  There will be cash prizes for Group and Individual Costumes.  It is strictly for over 18s.  ID will be required.  Face Painting will be available in Molloy’s Bar from 8.00p.m. on Sunday evening.

Every Mass from Friday 2nd November until Saturday 10th November in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties and The Holy Family Church, Edeninfagh will be offered for those who are named in the Dead Lists.  Special envelopes containing Dead Lists are available at the door of the Church.  The completed lists should be returned next weekend to be placed on the Altar for the Masses.

The Friends of Letterkenny General Hospital Collection, which was taken up recently in Glenties amounted to 1,035.60 Euro and in Edeninfagh it amounted to 163.95 Euro. Many thanks to all those who supported this cause.

A very successful fundraising walk was held in Glenties on Sunday 7th October to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care in Letterkenny.  The total amount raised was 2,100 Euro.  A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who participated or helped in any way

On Saturday 29th September Cathal Campbell and Denise Molloy were married in The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh.  Fr. Paul Gallagher officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass.  Cathal is a son of Peter and Susan Campbell, Silverhill, Glenties and Denise is a daughter of Martin and Teresa Molloy, Fintown.  Her father gave the bride away and her friends, Clare Breslin, Aisling Connaghan and Sinead Mc Monagle attended her.  Declan Bonner was bestman and Liam Mc Keever and Brian O’ Dea were groomsmen.  Nicole Morrow, niece of the groom was a flowergirl and Mark O’Hara, nephew of the groom was pageboy.  Readings were by Stephen Molloy, brother of the bride and Siobhan Morrow, sister of the groom.  Denise’s brothers, John, Fergus and Joe, Cathal’s sister Eileen, his niece, Mary and nephew, Liam read Prayers of the Faithful. The Gifts were brought to the Altar by Teresa, mother of the bride and Mary Rose O’Dea, sister of the groom.  Music and singing was by Eunan Mc Intyre.  The reception was held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties and the honeymoon was spent in New York, Las Vegas and Florida.

Mark Bonner and Andrena O ‘Donnell were married on Thursday 4th October 2007 in St. Barbara’s Church, Valetta, Malta.  Fr. Charles Carrabett officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass.  Mark is a son of Martin and Mary, Glen Road, Glenties and Andrena is a daughter of Noel and Mary, Belcruit and Dungloe.  The bride was given away by her friend, Nick Wormald and she was attended by her sister, Eilish O’Donnell and her friends, Edel Harvey and Diane Ferry.  Mark’s brother Stephen was bestman and his friends, Douglas Gallagher and Enda Mc Guigan were groomsmen.  Emma Bonner was a flowergirl and Jamie and Shaun O’Donnell were pageboys.  Readings were by Marie Bonner, sister of the groom and Evelyn Wormald, friend of the bride.  John and Roisin Bonner, and Naomi Harvey read Prayers of the Faithful.  The groom’s mother Mary and Evelyn Wormald brought the Gifts to the Altar.  The reception was held in Westin Hotel, St. Julians.

Congratulations to Naomh Conaill minor team who won the League Final when they beat Cloughaneely in Convoy on Sunday.  Well done lads!

Next Saturday 20th October there will be a Charity Car Wash in Glenties Town from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  All donations will go towards Third World Aid in Peru and Ethiopia.

The Annual General Meeting of the Tidy Towns Committee takes place on Monday 22nd October at 9 p.m. in the Community Centre.

There will be a meeting of the Glenties Parish Council on Thursday 18th October at 9.00p.m. in the Community Centre.  Everyone is welcome.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Ciara Craig, Naomh Conaill Close, Glenties on the death recently in Dungloe Hospital of her father, Brian O’Hagan.

A night of Fashion and Entertainment will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday 25th October, in the Limelight, Glenties in aid of the New Well Women’s Clinic, Letterkenny.  Mr. Noel Cunningham is MC for the night.  Among the artists taking part in the entertainment will be Greene Rising, Erin’s Own and the Laughlin Sisters.  Fashion is from Mc Elhinney’s Men’s Department, Ballybofey and Verve, Donegal Town.  Admission is € 20 and this includes a wine and cheese reception.  Please support this worthy cause.

On Saturday 22nd September Mary Mc Hugh and Gerard Boyle were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties.  Fr. Pat Prendergast assisted by Fr. Eddie Gallagher officiated and concelebrated Nuptial Mass.  Mary is a daughter of Conal and Bried Mc Hugh, Narin Road, Glenties and Gerard is a son of John and Lily Boyle, Ringfort Inn, Bruckless.  Her father gave the bride away and she was attended by her cousin Jackie Gough and Leona Mc Grory, sister of the groom.  Kevin Boyle, brother of the groom was bestman and his cousin Rory was groomsman.  Readings were by John Boyle brother of the groom and Jamie Mc Hugh, cousin of the bride.  Michael Boyle, Joseph Mc Hugh, Marjorie Mc Hugh and Rodney Hall read Prayers of the Faithful.  The mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar.  Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’Donnell and Christine Mc Cool.  The reception was held in the Ringfort Inn, Bruckless and the honeymoon was spent in Malta.

Congratulations to Deirdre and Kevin Kelly, Galway on the birth recently of their first child, a baby boy (Conor).  Deirdre is a daughter of Neilie and Teresa Bonner, Ard Patrick, Glenties.

Congratulations to Martin Gormley (formerly Mullantyboyle, Glenties) who was presented with the Masters Athlete of the Year Award at the Letterkenny Athletic Club’s Awards Night in the Ramada Hotel, Letterkenny recently.

The death took place on Saturday 29th September 2007, in the Donegal Hospice, Letterkenny of Andrew Cape, Mullantyboyle, Glenties.  His remains were brought home on Sunday and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Tuesday.  Fr. Paul Gallagher assisted by Fr. Adrian Gavigan and Fr. Nigel Gallagher concelebrated Requiem Mass.  Readings were by Anne Gallagher, friend of the family and Meg Leahy, sister of Andrew’s wife, Clodagh.  Prayers of the Faithful were read and the Gifts were carried by family members and colleagues.  A Reflection, chosen by Andrew himself was read by daughter, Eleanor.  Music and singing was by the local choir who were joined by the Comprehensive School choir and Vincent Campbell.  Burial took place in the New Graveyard.  Music in the Graveyard was by Peter Campbell and Ernan O’ Donnell.  Andrew is survived by his wife, Clodagh, daughter, Eleanor, sons, Donal, Luke and Timothy, his parents, three brothers and one sister, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.  A native of Surrey, England Andrew Cape came to Glenties in 1982 when he married Clodagh Duggan, a teacher in St. Columba’s Comprehensive School.  The children from the Comprehensive School and Scoil Mhuire formed a Guard of Honour on the Chapel Brae as Andrew was very much involved with the youth of the community having run the Youth Club for many years.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Fr. Gerard Cunningham, C.C. Fintown on the death of his father Cathal Cunningham, Kilcar, which took place on Friday 5th October 2007; also to Fr. Gerard’s mother Patricia, (nee O’Donnell, Glenmakeniff, Glenties), to his brother and to the extended family.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Conal Mc Dermott and family, Doochary on the death of his wife Madge, which took place recently.  Madge (nee O’Donnell) was a native of Shallogans and worked in Glenties for a number of years.

An important meeting will take place in the Playgroup / Afterschool Building on Monday 15th October at 9 p.m. to discuss the future of our service.  All parents and all those interested are asked to attend.

The annual Church Gate Collection for the Friends of Letterkenny Hospital will be held next weekend Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October.

An Exhibition of Original Art Works by Mark Mac Grory, Kilraine will open in “Nancy’s” Ardara on Friday 12th October at 8.30p.m.         

On behalf of the Niall Mellon Township Trust Julian Molloy would like to thank those who made financial contributions towards the planned Building Blitz in Cape Town, South Africa in November 2007.  Julian will be travelling with 1300 Volunteers aiming to build 200 houses in one week, in one of the poorest townships in Cape Town.  This will provide housing for 200 families; the result of the week’s work will be that – straight away more that 1200 people in the township will have somewhere to live.

A meeting to discuss the formation of a Youth Club in Glenties will be held in the Highlands Hotel tonight Thursday 11th October 8 – 9 p.m.  All adults, especially parents are invited to attend.  For more details ring 9545879.

Anyone interested in swimming for the year 2007 / 2008? The new term will start on Monday 12th November next.  Forms are available at Glenties Post Office.  Please return them to the Post Office by Thursday October 18th.  Swimming for this year will be in the Mill Park, Donegal Town.  This is due to the closure of the old pool in Letterkenny and no accommodation at the new one and because of this the cost is higher.  It will be approximately 100 Euro for 8 weeks.  Depending on the number of applicants, there may be a second term in the New Year.

A two day skills building workshop in Suicide First Aid will be held in the Community Centre, Glenties on October 24th / 25th.  Asist seeks to create suicide safer communities.  The course trains participants to reduce the immediate risk of suicide and increases support for the person at risk.  Over the two days participants learn what a person at risk of suicide may need from others in order to keep them safe.  Asist helps people to apply suicide first aid with family, friends and co-workers or in formal settings.  Participants are shown how to – Recognise invitations for help from those at risk – To reach out and support that person – To review the risk of suicide – To develop a plan to keep them safe – To put them in contact with community resources.  The course is suitable for all types of caregivers working with others in a professional or voluntary capacity.  Places are limited.  To apply, phone Catherine on 071 9852607 (office hours).

The Glen of Glenties Tug O War club are running an 8-a-side open catchweight competition this Sunday 7th October at the Glen Tavern.  The competition will commence at 3p.m. and proceeds are in aid of the Donegal Hospice.  Come along, enjoy the crack and support a very worthy cause.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife and family of Andrew Cape, Mullantyboyle, Glenties, who died in Letterkenny Hospital on Saturday 29th September.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the Labour Party Collection arranged for last July in the Glenties area was not taken up.  The collection will now take place at Church Gates in Glenties and Edeninfagh on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October.

Congratulations to Caroline and Eamon Bonner, Meenahalla, Glenties on the birth last week of their first child, a baby girl (Erin).

Congratulations to Gerry Moore, Maas, Glenties, a teacher in St. Columba’s Comprehensive School, Glenties who was presented with an award by President Mary Mc Aleese in Dublin Castle on Monday 24th September.  52 teachers from all over Ireland were presented with Civic Merit Awards for their work as President Award Leaders for the past ten years.

Ceili, Sets and Barn Dance Classes will resume in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Thursday 11th October from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.

The Novena to Our Lady of Fatima, which was undertaken by the Donegal County Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, will take place in Knock on 13th October.  A bus will leave Glenties at 10 a.m. For more details ring 9557907.
