Glenties Notes 27th November 2007

Congratulations to Teresa Campbell, who graduated recently from St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, with an Honours Degree in Education.  Teresa received her primary education at Edeninfagh N.S. and her secondary at Gairm Scoil Chú Uladh, Ballinamore.    She is a daughter of Josie and Alice Campbell, Tangavane, Glenties and is currently teaching in Scoil Colmcille, Fintown.

Congratulations to Niamh Boyle, who graduated on Saturday 24th November from the Institute of Technology, Sligo, with a Bachelor of Business Honours Degree.  Niamh is a daughter of Pat and Barbara Boyle, Glen Road, Glenties.

Congratulations to Fiona Burke who graduated on Saturday 24th November from the Institute of Technology, Sligo with a Bachelor of Business Degree in Management.  Fiona is a daughter of Bernie Burke, The Rock, Glenties.  Both Niamh and Fiona received their primary education in Scoil Mhuire and secondary in St. Columba’s Comprehensive School, Glenties.

The Girls old school was bought by the H S E some time ago with the promise of building a New Health Centre in Glenties.  At a special meeting of the Parish Council on Friday night, which was very well attended, it was decided to get a petition signed by all the people and this petition will be taken to homes in Glenties and the surrounding area this week for your signature.  Please give your support by signing.  It might also help if you got in touch with our representatives in Dail Eireann.  Another meeting is being held in the Community Centre tomorrow Friday 30th November at 8 p.m.

Sunday 9th December 2007 will be a Night of Donegal Nostalgia in the Limelight, Glenties.  Margo (Donegal Person of the Year) will be there with supporting acts – Pauline Glackin & Joe Rodgers, Elaine Boyle, Deirdre Bonner and Paddy Joe O’ Donnell.  Proceeds of the concert are in aid of the Hydro Pool Building Fund.  The concert will start at 8 p.m.  Tickets are 20 Euro and are on sale in Mc Glincheys.

Glenties Community Alert Committee would like to thank all who contributed to their recent Church Gate Collection which amounted to 665.44 Euro in Glenties and 109.57 Euro in Edeninfagh.  The committee have Security Equipment available for Senior Citizens.  Anyone requiring same should contact John Gormley at 9551258, Michael Glynn at 9551393 or Nora Breslin at 9551192 after 6.00p.m.

On Wednesday evening throughout Advent we will take time out to reflect on “Christmas – Being Ready”.  If you would feel like joining us at the Convent, Gortnamuclagh, you will be very welcome.  We start on Wednesday 5th December 8.30 – 9.30 p.m.

Maria Mc Loone and Stephen Mc Dermott were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 10th November 2007.  Fr. John Mc Loone assisted by Fr. Pat Prendergast officiated and concelebrated Nuptial Mass.  Maria is a daughter of John and the late Bridie Mc Loone, Main Street, Glenties and Stephen is a son of Michael and Margaret Mc Dermott, Cappry, Ballybofey.  Her father gave the bride away and she was attended by her sister, Breid Mc Loone, her friends, Caroline Cannon and Mary Byrne.  The groom’s cousin, Gareth Martin was bestman and two other cousins, Gavin and Barry Mc Dermott were groomsmen.  Brooke Ramshaw, God-daughter of the groom was a flowergirl and the groom’s cousin, Mark Stewart was a pageboy.  Readings were by Paul Francis, cousin of the bride and Anne Ramshaw, aunt of the groom.  Laura Haytman and Teresa Francis, cousins of the bride, Natasha Stewart and Jamie Doherty, cousins of the groom read Prayers of the Faithful.  The Gifts were brought to the Altar by the groom’s mother, Margaret and Patricia Boyle, cousin of the bride.  Kevin and Stephen Meehan, Maria’s cousins were Altar Servers.  Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’ Donnell and Sinead Finn.  The reception was held in The Mill Park Hotel, Donegal Town and the honeymoon is being spent on a Caribbean Cruise.

Congratulations to Noreen, daughter of Noel and Bridie Conefry, Mill Road, Glenties who recently got engaged to Kevin Mc Monagle, Quigley’s Point.

Congratulations to our U / 21 Team who retained their County Title on Sunday in O’Donnell, Park, Letterkenny when they defeated Ardara in the County Final.  Well Done Lads!                        

A meeting will be held to discuss the Youth Club on Friday 23rd November in the Highlands Hotel at 8 p.m.  All parents who were at the registration night are asked to attend.

Please note that, as of this week the Group will meet on Friday mornings starting this Friday morning – 23rd November, in the Day Centre, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, from 10.30a.m. until 12.30p.m.  All are Welcome.

Cllr. Terence Slowey is pleased to state that upgrading of the following Roads in the Glenties area have now been agreed as part of the 2008 Roads Programme.  1. Main Glenties / Fintown Road from the timber factory at Shallogans towards Fintown for 2.5 km at an approximate cost of 90,000 Euro.  2. Stracastle – Graffy – From the Graffy Bridge towards the Dry Arch for a length of 2 km at a cost of approximately 33,000 Euro.  3. Strasallagh – From Tighe’s Bridge towards Meenahalla for 1.5 km at a cost of 22,500 Euro.  4. Buncrubog – From Tighe’s Bridge towards Glenties for approx. 1 km at a cost of 25,000 Euro.  5. Kilkenny – From the Statue of Liberty towards the school for 1.5 km at an approximate cost of 25,000 Euro.  6. Largnalarkin – From Ballinamore V.S. towards Kingarrow for 2 km at an approximate cost of 35,000 Euro.  Community Involvement Scheme for the Ardara / Glenties / Downstrands area for Roads Allocation – 40,000 Euro.  This is the first year of this provision and the details of this will be worked out at a meeting of the councillors and Road Engineers early in 2008.  The National Roads Authority Allocations and the Regional Roads Allocations together with Gaeltacht funding will be announced separately in 2008.

High speed broadband is now available in areas in South West Donegal including Ardara, Glenties, Portnoo, Killybegs, Dunkineely and Bruckless.

Fastcom Broadband in Sligo and Antenna Electronics in Ardara are providing a unique broadband service which is not provided by any other provider in the North West.

The broadband speeds are unique in that they are symmetrical (ie speed up and down are the same) this type of service is not available from any other provider.

Glenties Notes 14th November 2007

Congratulations to Maria Mc Loone, Main St. Glenties and Stephen Mc Dermott, who were married in Glenties on Saturday last.

Congratulations to Michael Roarty, The Wood, Glenties who celebrated his 80th Birthday recently with his family, in the Highlands Hotel.

The Glenties Community Alert will hold their Annual Church Gate Collection in Glenties and Edeninfagh on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November.  This collection is used for the purchase of Socially Monitored Alarms and other items of Security Equipment for older people.

The Glen of Glenties Tug O War club would like to extend a sincere thanks to everyone who contributed in the very successful Hospice fundraising Tug O War competition recently held at the Glen Tavern.  Sincere thanks to the teams who took part, the large crowd who supported the event and to those who gave donations.  A cheque for 1,350 Euro was presented to Catherina O’ Donnell of the Donegal Hospice.

The annual Glenties Parish Social will be held on Sunday 2nd December in the Highlands Hotel.  All our senior citizens are invited.  The afternoon will begin with Mass at 3 p.m. Dinner will follow at 4 p.m. after which there will be entertainment around 5.30 p.m.

The following is a written reply to Labour Leader, Eamon Gilmore’s question to Mr. Gormley, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government regarding the Glenties sewerage scheme – “The Glenties Sewerage Scheme was being advanced as a joint project that also includes schemes for Dungloe and Gweedore.  My Department has approved Donegal County Council’s Preliminary Reports for each location and the overall project is included in my Department’s Water Service Investment Programme 2007 – 2009 to begin construction in 2008.

Donegal County Council recently submitted clarification to my Department on a proposal to proceed with the Glenties and Dungloe elements of the project in advance of Gweedore, and my Department will examine this proposal as quickly as possible.”

A part-time FAS sponsored ECDL Course (16 weeks) will take place in the area early in 2008, venue to be decided.  A training allowance will be paid, (this will not affect any other benefit).  A childcare allowance is also available.  If you are interested, call Bernie at the Family Resource office – 9545879.

The I.S.P.C.C. collection taken up recently in Edeninfagh amounted to 130 Euro.  Many thanks to all those who supported this cause.

The Annual General Meeting of the Parish Council takes place this evening Thursday 15th November in the Highlands Hotel at 9.00p.m.  Everyone is welcome.

On Friday 26th October 2007 Philip Gallagher and Arlene Dunleavy were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties.  Fr. Pat Prendergast officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass.  Philip is a son of Phil and Nora Gallagher, Buncrubog, Glenties and Arlene is a daughter of Gerry and Dolores Dunleavy, Annagry.  Her father gave the bride away and she was attended by Marie Mc Bride, Grace Sharkey, Carol Gallagher and Tracy Devine.  Brendan O’ Donnell was bestman and David Molloy, Frankie Devine and Gavin Dunleavy were groomsmen.  Ruth Byrne, niece of the groom was a flowergirl and Christopher Dunleavy, brother of the bride was a pageboy.  Readings were by Laura Gallagher and Pricilla Boyle.  Jason Gallagher, Seamus Mc Devitt, Darrell Dunleavy and Julianne Boyle read Prayers of the Faithful.  The mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar.  Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’Donnell.  Nephews of the groom, Conor and Paul Quinn and Michael Mc Devitt were the Altar servers at the Mass. The reception was held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties and the honeymoon is being spent in Tunisia.

Aisling Bonner and Conor O’ Neill were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 27th October 2007.  Aisling is a daughter of Neily and Barbara Bonner, Straboy, Glenties and Conor is a son of Colm and Mary O’ Neill, Westport, Co. Mayo.  Fr. Pat Prendergast officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass.  Her father gave the bride away and her sister Kathleen Bonner, her friend, Sinead Conway and the groom’s sister Orla O’ Neill attended her.  Finbar O’ Neill, brother of the groom was bestman.  Another brother, Neil and a friend, Seamus Seehan were groomsmen.  Kelly Bonner was a flowergirl and Thomas Bonner was a pageboy.  The mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar.  Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’ Donnell and James O’ Malley.  The reception was held in the Blue Haven Hotel, Kilcar and the honeymoon is being spent in the Maldives.

Congratulations to Pauline Doherty who passed out as a Garda in Templemore on Thursday 1st November 2007.  Pauline is a daughter of Patrick Gerard and Anne Doherty Mill Road, Glenties and is presently stationed in Carrick on Shannon.

A fabulous Gala Ball in aid of the Oncology unit in Letterkenny will be held on Saturday 17th November in the Radisson Hotel, Letterkenny.  The night will begin with a champagne reception at 7.30p.m., followed by a five course meal, music by Streetlife, and a DJ afterwards.  A raffle will be held on the night.  A complementary bus, run by Frank Mc Guinness will leave Ardara at 6.30p.m., Glenties at 6.45p.m. and return at the end of the night.  Tickets cost 100Euro and are available at Mc Glinchey’s Mace or by phoning Deirdre O’Donnell at 086-4023167 or Eleanor Cape at 086-1016811.

The death took place in Dungloe Hospital on Tuesday 30th October 2007 of Mary Gallagher, Farrigans, Lettermacaward, and formerly of Letterilly, Glenties.  Her remains were brought to her home in Farrigans for waking and to St. Brigid’s Church, Lettermacaward on Wednesday for Requiem Mass, which Fr.Gallagher C.C. Lettermacaward celebrated.  The remains were then brought to the New Graveyard in Glenties for burial.  Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties assisted Fr. Gallagher at the burial service.  Mary, who was 94 years of age moved from her home in Letterilly to Farrigans to live beside her niece Mary Trearty about ten years ago.  She had been in good health until about 8 weeks ago when she went to Hospital.  She is survived by one sister Annie Mc Hugh, Narin Road, Glenties and one brother, Danny Morrow, Kilraine, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.  Her husband Patrick predeceased her over twenty years ago and her brother Patrick Morrow and her sister Gracie Melly also predeceased her.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Maureen Phelan, Main Street, Glenties on the death of her brother, Fergus Phelan, Sutton, Co. Dublin, which took place on Wednesday 31st October 2007.  Sincere sympathy also to Fergus’s wife, Mary and his family, to his brother Eamon, sisters, Maeve, Bried, Dolores, Pat and the extended family.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Nora O’ Donnell and family, Ard Patrick, Glenties on the death of Nora’s sister, Mary Friel, Killybegs and formerly of Drimnacrosh, Glenties which took place on Saturday 3rd November 2007 in Harbour Lights Nursing Home, Bruckless; also to all the relatives and friends. 

A Youth Club will be starting in Glenties Community Centre for young people aged 12 – 15 years.  The registration night will be Friday 9th November in the Highlands Hotel at 8 p.m.  All young people, 12-15 yrs are welcome, but must have a parent / adult with them in order to register.  A short meeting will also take place to inform people about the Club.  The Club will be supported by Downstrands Family Resource Centre, and Donegal Youth Service.  Please remember – an adult must accompany young person in order to register.
