Glenties Notes 25th June 2008

The Glenties Playgroup and Afterschool are offering a Drop in Service for children aged 3 years – 12 years for the month of July. Children can be booked in on a daily basis at an hourly rate of 3.50 Euro for the 1st hour, with subsequent hours at 3 Euro per hour. 2 small snacks are offered to children during the day. Children staying any more than 2 hours must have a packed lunch with them. Pre-school children are only allowed to stay a maximum of 3.5 hours due to health board regulations.
The programme of activities includes Art and Craft, Collage, Painting, Junk art, Make and Do Activities, Cooking, Quizzes, Ice breaker games, Table Top games, Races, Table tennis, Pool, Snooker, Darts, Football, Volleyball, Picnics and an Outdoor play activity centre. Computer access and Library access are also available.
Places ar limited so secure your child’s place by calling in and pre-booking or telephone 074-9551904. Service is open to all children in the Glenties and surrounding areas and also children visiting or holidaying in the area. Dates for Drop in – 30th June – 1st August. Opening Times – 9.30 a.m. – 5.30 p.m.

Congratulations to Declan Bonner, Glen Road, Glenties and Isobel Cunningham, Ardara who were married in the Church of the Holy Family, Ardara on Friday last.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Mons. Dan Mc Dyer, a native of Kilraine, Glenties, former Parish Priest of Stranorlar and former Principal of Mc Devitt Institute and St. Columba’s Comprehensive School, Glenties, who has died in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Stranorlar.

A Car Treasure Hunt will take place in Fintown on Sunday 6th July at 3.00p.m. sharp. Proceeds are in aid of Naionra, Baile na Finne. The starting point is at Naionra, Fintown. 10 Euro per car. First Prize – SAT. NAV. Refreshments will be served on return.

Glenties Notes 17th June 2008

The death took place at her home on Monday 9th June 2008 of Bridie Conefry, Mill Road, Glenties. Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Thursday morning. Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Pat Prendergast assisted by Fr. Adrian Gavigan. Readings were by her daughter Angeline and nephew and God-child, Bob Gallagher. Her daughters, June Gilroy and Noreen Robinson, niece and nephew, Catherine and Matt Gallagher read Prayers of the Faithful. The Gifts were brought to the Altar by her two brothers, Jim and Robert Gallagher, friend, Margaret Rodger, grandchildren, Rosie, Katie, Amber, Rachel, Emily, Frank, Aidan, Shaun and Bethany. Music and singing was by John F. O’ Donnell, Denise Boyle and Sinead Finn. The psalm was by Bridie’s cousin, Anita Peoples. Burial took place in Culdaff. Bridie is survived by her husband, Noel, daughters, Angeline, Rachel, June and Noreen, two brothers, Jim and Robert, sister, Sadie, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her brother, Willie and two sisters, Maureen and Rosaleen predeceased her. Bridie Conefry came to Glenties in the early 60’s when her husband Noel was transferred here as a Garda. She was a great character, loved fun and children, fostered many in her youth, organised outings for them and for the local children and also for older people. As well as all that she raised money for a charity in India. She also enjoyed creative writing and being involved with the community. At festival time she dressed up and took part in the Parades. Last year she was given the honour of opening the Harvest Fair Festival. We will miss her this year.

Message from – The Tidy Town Committee “We would welcome volunteers (no age limit) to join us on Monday evenings to partake in painting, cleaning etc. to get our town looking exceptionally well for the 50th year. We sincerely thank all those businesses and private houses who have already painted and encourage any others who think it is necessary to paint, to do so. Any help needed will be given by the committee. Please assemble at the Community Centre at 7.00 p.m. to discuss the work plan. The Tidy Town slogan is “Get out, Get into it”. Looking forward to seeing a good crowd.”

The Dolmen Centre is happy to announce, that they are now in a position to seek Design Teams to bring their Swimming Pool Project to planning permission stage. This follows extensive consultation with Donegal County Council who has placed the job on the government etenders website. Prospective Design Teams should check the site and make an application as per the instructions. The Dolmen Centre Committee would like to thank Donegal County Council for their help in reaching another milestone in this project and look forward to working with them to bring it to its ultimate fruition.

On Thursday 26th June the Dolmen Centre is hosting a variety concert in aid of St. Joseph’s and the Helper’s Charity, Medugorje. This charity is working with numerous orphanages in Bosnia and Herzegovina to eradicate the poverty inflicted upon thousands of children following the Yugoslavian wars of the 90’s. ‘Mystic Force’- professional Irish Dance Company will perform with dancers fresh from the world wide stage of Riverdance. The outstanding talent of the children from St. Conal’s N.S. will be incorporated into the night’s performances. The concert begins at 7.30 p.m. and promises to be fantastic evening, with something for everyone. Tickets cost 15 Euro and can be booked by contacting Claire on 087 9353972. All the proceeds go directly to the work in “The Mother’s Village” orphanage, Medugorje.

The 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday 22nd June will be celebrated as the Family Mass, for which the Children of the Parish will prepare the Liturgy.

The Annual Church Gate Collection for the Glenties Care of the Aged will take place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June.

Glenties Notes 14th June 2008

The Classes of ’68 in St. Columba’s Comprehensive School are having their reunion on the first weekend in August. The Gala Dinner takes place on Saturday 2nd August. Please return your booking forms as tickets are limited. Contact numbers are – 086 3330000, 086 4010401 and 086 3671873.

The Mac Gill Summer School 2008 takes place from 13th – 19th July. Theme for the school this year is “The Life and Works of Brian Friel.

Opening hours for the Dolmen Centre have changed for the Summer and are as follows – Monday – Friday – 9.30 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. On Tuesday and Thursday it will also be open from 7.00 p.m. – 10.00 p.m.

An Auction will be held in the Dolmen Centre in August and they would appreciate any unwanted items, i.e. furniture, toys, electrical goods, bicycles, gym equipment, tools, paintings, etc. Items need to be in good condition and in working order. Unfortunately they cannot accept clothing.

Glenties Theatre Workshop will present the Children’s Musical “Make Believe” on Friday 20th June at 8.00 p.m. and on Sunday 22nd June at 3.30 p.m. Tickets are available in the following outlets – Iniskeel Co-op, Mc Glinchey’s Mace, Kee Butchers, and Cannon’s Service Station. Admission is 8 Euro for adults and 4 Euro for children. Proceeds are in aid of the School Gym. Please support.

Minutes of Meeting Thursday 8th May 2008

Toilets

Intended meeting with the council due the previous Wednesday didn’t take place due to some council members being unable to attend.
Tidy Towns are to get a quotation for paint and submit it to the council.

ESB

Lights not working were repaired except one out the Ardara road.
The leaning pole out the station road was reported to the ESB.

Playground

A letter was read out from the council and it now looks like the Glenties playground will not be completed in time for the Tidy towns competition.
It was reported at the meeting that letters were sent to all the Co. Councillors looking for their assistance and only Terence Slowey and Padraig O’Doherty replied.

Health Centre

Work is continuing and in 3 months time the project should be ready to go to planning.

Units

Contractor was contacted the previous Thursday to say that a cheque was ready for him but it hadn’t been collected.
There are ongoing delays with the ESB and the electrician is ready to go back to work as soon as the ESB is sorted.

Library

There was a meeting with the Co. Council and they looked at the Community Centre and also the Museum
After this the Museum committee reported that the Museum was available.

Garda

We are awaiting a report on correspondence with the ethnic groups.
It was brought to the attention of the Garda present that some vandalism had taken place the previous Saturday night, flower pots overturned etc and this was to be brought to the attention of the units on patrol.

Harvest Fair (Me Gurks)

It is still hoped that the amusements will be erected in front of the new gym at the comprehensive.
There was a question regarding the safety etc of Me Gurks but it was reported at the meeting that their equipment is checked out on a regular basis and their record down the years is very good.
Regarding the Harvest Fair festival everything is on track at the moment with bigger and better plans than last year.

Sewer

Engineers have been in town checking out lines etc so there is some progress.

Water Supply

Some problems reported with the quality of the water in Ard Connel. Water is reported as being dirty sometimes.

Footpaths

Problem with broken footpaths in Ard Conne! which has been reported to the Co. Council but nothing has been done.

Town Renewal Scheme

This matter was discussed but no decisions taken

Congratulations to Tara and Damien Mc Devitt, Kilraine, Glenties on the birth recently of their third child, a baby sister for Francis and Kieran.

Congratulations to Patricia and Brian Campbell, Dublin on the birth recently of their second child, a baby brother for Eimear. Brian is a son of Frankie and Nora Campbell, Glen Road, Glenties.

There will be Mass in Rossnowlagh on Friday 13th June to celebrate the Feast of St. Anthony and Blessing of the lilies. A bus will leave Mc Guinness’ at 6.00 p.m.

The Annual Walk in aid of Kidney Dialysis Comfort Fund will leave the Glen Tavern at noon on Saturday 19th July going by Edeninfagh, The Croaghs and Tangavane. For further information ring 074 9551170 or 9557978.

Participants are wanted for Glenties Tidy Towns Scheme, starting in Mid June. Applicants must satisfy specific eligibility criteria for FAS. Anyone interested ring 9551833 or 086 1209524.
