Naomh Conaill Notes 25th November 2008

Good luck to the Senior team who meet St Eunans in the Div 1A league final this Sunday in Ballybofey at 2pm. They reached the final after beating Dungloe in Letterkenny last Sunday 0-12 to 1-05. We hope a large crowd will travel and support the boys.

Well done to the Aodh Ruadh quiz team John Magee, PJ Buggy, Peter Campbell and Slyvester Maguire who won the Ultimate GAA Quiz held in the Higlands Hotel last Sunday and in second place was the NCA team who were Paddy Boyle, Hugh Brendan Mc Dyre, Paddy Doherty(Glenfin) and Kieran Mc Monagle(Letterkenny). We would like to thank all the teams who took part and a lot of them had to travel long distance on a bad night and to the organising committee for all their work and the Hotel who were very helpful. Thanks also to our sponsor MCM. It was a very enjoyable evening and everyone that was there enjoyed themselfs and we hope to make this a annual event.

The Naomh Conaill ladies are hosting a variety concert this Friday 28th November at 8pm in The Market Hall.Admission is 10 Euro,students 5 Euro and the doors open at 7.30pm. So come along for a good evenings entertainment.

There was no winner of last weeks lotto.Two prizes of 50 Euro went to Paula Hegarty,Glenties and Theresa Molloy,Finyown.The numbers drawn were 17,19,21,22. The jackpot now stands at 2,400 Euro.

The Dinner Dance will take place on Sunday 28th December in the Highlands.

There will be a underage function on Thursday 8th January in the clubhouse and the special guest on the night will be the Sam Maguire Cup.

Joanne Mc Loone and Donal Trimble were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 15th November 2008. Fr. Pat Prendergast officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Joanne is a daughter of Connell and Mena Mc Loone, Glen Road, Glenties and Donal is a son of the late Hugo and Bridget Trimble, Toome, Lettermacaward. Her father gave the bride away and her sisters, Roisin and Grainne Mc Loone and her friend Grainne Boyle attended her. Bobby Trimble the groom’s brother was bestman and his friends Johnny Breslin and Daniel Elliott were groomsmen. Gracie Trimble was flowergirl and Jordan Gillespie was pageboy. Readings were by Connell Boal, cousin of the bride and John Thomas, brother-in-law of the groom. Connell and Michael Mc Loone, Joanne’s brothers, Jonathon Boal, her cousin and Donal’s niece, Rachel O’Brien read Prayers of the Faithful. The Gifts were brought to the Altar by Mena Mc Loone, the bride’s mother and Maeve Thomas, the groom’s sister. Music and singing was by Sinead Kennedy and cousins of the bride, Donna and Clare Henchy. The reception was held in the Blue Haven, Kilcar and the honeymoon was spent in Grand Canaria.

The wedding of Michael Furey and Mary Lou Browne took place in St. Mary’s Church, Killymard, Donegal on Saturday 15th November 2008. Fr. Francis Mc Loone officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Michael is a son of P.J. and Teresa Furey, Mullanmore, Glenties and Mary Lou is a daughter of Peter and Mary Browne, Drimrooske Estate, Donegal. Her father gave the bride away and her bridesmaids were her friends, Tracy Mullen, Catriona Martin, Catherine Mc Gee and Noreen Martin. John Paul Molloy was bestman and John Boyle, Damien Mc Elhinney and Rory Bonner were groomsmen. All are friends of the groom. Danielle Campbell was a flowergirl. Readings were by Patricia Campbell, sister of the groom and an aunt of the bride. Jonathon, Danielle and Elaine Campbell, Chloe Mullen and Callum Doherty read Prayers of the Faithful. The mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by Eileen Carr and Collette Mc Devitt. The reception was held in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town and the honeymoon was spent in Florida.

The County Final of Scór na nÓg will be held this Saturday 29th November in the Community Centre, Glenties at 6.30 p.m. sharp. Everyone is welcome. 

Many thanks to Hugh Breslin who kindly ran the Dublin City Marathon in aid of the Playschool. The total amount he raised was €1077.50.

Michael Fitzgerald would like to thank all those who sponsored him for the Dublin City Marathon, which he ran in aid of Donegal Hospice, Letterkenny. The amount raised was €1,230.

Message from Teachers to Parents, Families and Boards of Management, of all the schools of our Parish “Please join us in our Protest March in Donegal Town next Saturday 29th November at 2.00 p.m. We are protesting about the disastrous Education cutbacks in the Budget and we need your support. The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (Donegal Branch) Christmas Cards, depicting a snow-clad Errigal, are now available from the Care of the Aged Centre, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent. A pack of six cards and envelopes cost €5. All the money raised will be spent in this county.

Glenties Community Alert Committee would like to thank all who contributed to the Church Gate Collection, which amounted to €872.10 in Glenties and €132.90 in Edeninfagh.

The Self-Help for Africa Collection taken up recently amounted to €815.30. Thank you all for very generous donations.

A Christmas Craft and Decorations evening with Luzia Becht will be held in the Resource Room at the Dolmen Centre on Tuesday 9th December from 7.00p.m. until 10.00p.m. Festive refreshments will be served. Come along and enjoy the fun and make your own festive decoration. The cost is €30. Numbers are limited so please book a place by contacting the Family Resource Centre at 074 9545879.

The club are hosting the Ultimate GAA Quiz this Sunday 23rd November at 8pm in the Highlands Hotel with registration starting at 7.30pm. The first prize is 500 Euro and 100 Euro for second placed team.Entry fee is 50 Euro and there is a maximum of 4 per team. All GAA enthusiasts are urged to come along for a good evenings fun and test your GAA knowledge against the best in the county as all the Gaa clubs in the county have being invited to attend.

The Seniors have advanced to the league semi final after beating Four Masters 0-8 to 1-4 in Glenties last Sunday. They now meet Dungloe in O Donnell Park, Letterkenny this Sunday at 1pm.

Congratulations to the boys and girls from St. Riaghan’s National School, Drimnacrosh, Glenties, who did so well in Glór na gCaiseal, an Irish competition, which was held in Kilcar on Saturday last 15th November 2008. David Keeney, Gemma O’ Donnell, Chloe Mc Nelis, Ellie Mc Innes and Claire Mc Geehan got 1st place in Singing and Reese and Manus Mc Dyer got 2nd in the Instrumentals. Stephen Griffin and J. D. Boyle who recited poems were highly commended. The winners will be on Radio na Gaeltachta later on in the year.

The Annual Christmas Parish Social takes place on Sunday 7th December at 3.00 p.m. in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties. A warm welcome is extended to all the Senior Citizens of the area. Music and entertainment will be at 6.00 p.m. so please come along and help our guests to have an enjoyable evening.

Club Ceilí na Gleannta are holding their annual Dinner and Ceilí in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Saturday 13th December (5 course dinner and choice of menu). Music is by Copperplate Ceilí Band. Admission to Dinner and Ceilí is €30. Admission to Ceilí is €10. Suicide Prevention

A letter was read from the suicide prevention initiative. They are seeking funding and would like a letter of support from the Parish Council.

 

Rural Transport

The Rural Bus Scheme would like to extend to cover the Glenties area. There will be a meeting on Monday night in the Community centre. They hope to be running early next year.

 

Ard Connell

Funding has been secured to replace the footpath. Plus while the footpath is being done the water pipes will also be replaced.

 

Lights

The ESB have repaired all faulty lights in Glenties. Lights in Naomh Connaill Close have to be checked by the ESB. There is still a pole on the station that has to be replaced.

 

Playground

The tender has gone in for Loughanure and hopefully Glenties will now be next.

 

Sewage Scheme

The final tender documents are to be submitted at the end of September or early October.

 

Tullyard Road

Terrance has brought the state of the road to the attention of the planning department. They have been tols the road can’t be left in its current state.

 

Delegation to Council

It was suggested that the Parish Council should submit a request to the County Council to be able to do a presentation to all elected members.

 

Mulantyboyle Bridge

The pillar at the bridge has been knocked into the river and this has made it very dangerous at night.

 

Terrance Slowely

Donegal County Council are in negation with two developers for turnkey developments in Glenties.

The LIS roads programme for 2009 is being put together and the closing date is the end of October.

 

Health Centre

Some ground testing was done and if currently ongoing.

 

GARRC

The Councillors have been contacted and positive response was received. It is still in the early planning stage and is pushing ahead. The next step is to address Donegal County Council and then seek funding. It is going to be at least a 3 year project.

There was no winner of last weeks lotto.Two prizes of 50 Euro went to Denise Casserly,Glenties Garda Station and Lisa Coughlan,Glenties.The numbers drawn were 11,12,13,22.The jackpot now stands at 2,200 Euro.

The Seniors beat Ardara 1-13 to 1-09 in a league play of under the lights in Ballybofey last Saturday evening. It was a very entertaining game played in very wintery conditions and both teams did their best to play good football. The seniors are now due to meet Four Masters this Sunday in Glenties or Donegal Town. The Reserves played their last game of the year last Sunday at home to Dungloe and were well beat on the day.

Congratulations to Denise and Cathal Campbell, Silverhill on the birth recently of their first child, a baby girl (Róisa Marie).

Sincere sympathy is extended to Sean Boyle and family, Ard Patrick, Glenties, on the death recently in London of Sean’s brother Donal. Burial took place in Kilcar on Friday last.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Majella Boyle and family, Narin Road, Glenties, on the death of Majella’s mother, Rose Sheridan which took place last week in Co. Cavan.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Peggy Mc Dyer and family, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, Glenties on the death of Peggy’s sister, Vera Hickey, which took place last week in Ballina, Co. Mayo.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Byrne Family, Maas, Glenties, Packie, Mary, James and Leo, Nora, Donegal, on the death in Wales on Saturday 8th November of their brother, Michael; also to all the relatives and friends.

The Glenties Community Alert will hold their Annual Church Gate Collection in Glenties and Edeninfagh on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th November.

This collection is used for the purchase of Socially Monitored Alarms and other items of Security for older people.

The committee would like to thank everyone who supported us on the Harvest Fair Day in our fund raising effort. The winner of the Nintendo Wii was Brendan Gallagher from Rosbeg and the winner of the €100 in the ‘guess the number of balloons’ draw was Bredge Mc Grath, the Rock, Glenties.

The Sacrament of Baptism is the Theme of our Family Mass next Sunday 16th November at 11.00 a.m. A reminder to the parents who have received letters that a meeting will take place at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday 15th in the Church.

The new swimming session begins in the New Year. These swimming sessions will be in the Ballyshannon Leisure Centre on Tuesday nights from 6.00 – 7.00 p.m. More travel details will be available closer to the time. Beginners and more able swimmers will have the opportunity to achieve their water safety badges. Forms are available in the Paper Stop, Glenties and Present Day, Ardara. Forms to be returned there by Wednesday 19th November. Children aged 7 in this school year and upwards may apply.

The Glenties Parish Council AGM will take place in the Highlands Hotel this Thursday 13th November at 9.00 p.m. Please come along to this meeting as we need new members to continue the important work of the Parish Council.

The Management and staff of the Glenties Playschool and Afterschool would like to thank Hugh Breslin who raised €591.50 when he completed the recent Dublin City Marathon. Thank You.

The Rehab Collection which was taken up in August amounted to €837.74. Many thanks to all those who supported this cause.

The Association’s national fundraising Angel Campaign is taking place on Friday 14th November. I.W.A. Angel Pins will be sold nationwide for €2.00 and monies raised will help to fund services for the 20,000 member throughout the country.

The death took place in Letterkenny General Hospital on Wednesday 15th October 2008 of John Heraghty, Straboy, Glenties. His remains were brought to his home later that day and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday morning. Fr. Pat Prendergast assisted by Fr. James Friel and Fr. Dan Doherty concelebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by nieces, Janice Mc Nelis and Kathleen Ann Heraghty. Music and singing was by John F. O’ Donnell and Denise Heraghty, a niece of the deceased. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. John is survived by his wife, Sadie, three sons, Michael, Martin and John, two brothers, Michael and Ignatius, nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. He was predeceased by three brothers, Denis, Hughie and Eddie. John was a native of Fanad. He and his wife Sadie (nee Mc Nelis) Glenties spent most of their married life in England before coming back to Ireland about eleven years ago and making their home in Straboy.

The death took place in the Donegal Hospice, Letterkenny on Thursday 16th October 2008 of Mary Mc Gill, Station Road, Glenties. The Gifts were brought to the Altar by nieces, Christine Gallagher, Carol Mc Gill and Fiona Gallagher. Music and singing was by Catriona Mc Intyre, Claire Mc Ginley, Caoimhe Newell and Grainne Gavigan, nieces and grand nieces of Mary’s. Joanne Gallagher, (grand niece) Ailbhe O’Donnell and Briana Mc Donnell were Altar Servers. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Mary is survived by her husband, Josie, brother, Hugh, sisters, Teresa and Bried Gallagher, Peggy Gavigan, Kathleen Hegarty, Agnes Mc Gill and Philomena Dorrian, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Two brothers, Phil and Paddy and one sister, Annie predeceased her.

Her remains were brought to her son Frankie’s home in Lower Mully on Sunday and to The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Tuesday morning. Fr. Denis Quinn assisted by Fr. Pat Prendergast concelebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by nieces, Marian Carr and Bernie Bonner and the Gifts were brought to the Altar by her Godchildren Hughie Quinn and Philomena Campbell. Music and singing was by Breidin and James Gallagher. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Graveyard. Bridie is survived by her son Frankie and daughter-in-law Tracy, sisters, Rosie, Kitty, Gracie, Sarah, Annie, Eileen, Mamie, Susan and Maggie, brothers, Paddy and John, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband Frankie predeceased her twenty two years ago. Two brothers, Barney and Peter also predeceased her.
