Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 27th July 2009

By on July 27, 2009 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

Narin and Portnoo Golf Club invites all-comers to play in the Junior / Intermediate / Senior Scratch Cups being played on Monday, August 3rd. The entry fee is 10 euro for members and 30 euro for visitors. The course is busy at present and among those to enjoy its pleasures last week were Enda Kenny, T.D. and Dr. Martin McAleese.

Pat Connaghan’s veterans enjoyed a fine victory over Ballybofey and Stranorlar in the first leg of their County Semi-Final last Friday. None of the pairings lost on the day, with four winning and one getting a hard-earned half. We wish them well in the return leg as they bid to reach the final for the first time.

The club sends its condolences to the O’Donnell and Slowey families on their recent sad bereavements. They are all in our thoughts at this time.

Paidí Beag has oft bragged that he can take on all-comers single-handed…at golf. Well, last Wednesday he did just that, sinking a 30-foot raker at the last to square his fourball match with his habitual sporting foes. It has since emerged that Paddy (unknown to himself) had played that day with a double fracture of his left elbow, having sustained a fall earlier in the week. This is the stuff of legend, what elevates Glen men from mere mortals. We wish Paidí a full and speedy recovery and hope that he continues to grace us with dubious anecdotes and sparkling erudition during his convalescence.

Joseph McLoone continued his good form in the Wednesday Open, winning his second event in succession. His score of 43 points reduced his handicap still further after his heroics of the previous Sunday. The Glenties stalwart fashioned a massive 25 points on the front nine, thanks to six pars and two birdies. The back nine was more prosaic, with a sprinkling of pars, birdies, bogeys and double bogeys. Some day he’s going to really rip the course apart!

Kieran Cunnea and John Malone combined on Sunday to win the Lake House Hotel Fourball with a great score of 41 points in tough conditions. All the golfers played off three-quarters of their handicaps, so scoring was obviously going to be tougher. The front nine was John’s, recording seven of the pairs entries. The reverse applied on the way home, with Kieran opening the shoulders and finishing strongly with three successive pars into the wind.

The site investigation for the new sewage scheme has been completed and the results are currently being written up. When the report is finished it will go forward for tender.

The project requires the Council to put up their portion of the funding and currently the Council has no funding available.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 23rd July 2009

By on July 23, 2009 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

Over 40 budding young stars enjoyed the July Golf Camp at Narin & Portnoo Golf Club hosted by PGA professionals, Connor Mallon and Daragh Lyons.

The Donegal Alzheimer Society fundraiser was a tremendous success with 6,884 euro raised to date from the collective effort. Great credit is due to Nan Quinn and John Quinn on their initiative and hard work. Mary Connaghan of the Donegal Alzheimer’s Society was on hand to congratulate the winners and to thank all those who participated. Marty McGing won the golf event with a great score of 42 points. The 17 handicapper had identical nines of 21 points, with five pars secured on the back nine. The raffle winners were Patrick Gallagher (All Stars signed shirt), Kieran Cunnea and Connor Mallon, who won a golf voucher for his own shop! The Dunmore Caravans Society handed over 560 euro to the fund, the proceeds of their competition last week and such a magnanimous gesture was much appreciated.

The club’s Minor League team won the first leg of the county semi-final on Sunday after a hard-fought match with Dudley Coyle’s Northwest. A three-two scoreline shows how tight the match lies and there’s all to play for in the return match scheduled for the coming weekend. We wish them well.

Wednesday’s competition saw Michael Doyle accumulate 41 points for a two shot win. His front nine of 22 points set up the big score and the 19 points coming home was achieved despite a blank on ten.

Sunday’s competition was sponsored by Patrick Johnny Sally’s Bar in Dungloe and 117 played despite the distractions on the telly. Joseph McLoone is the in-form player at present and he justified his favourite’s tag by engineering a fine score of 71. He secured a four over par gross total on the front nine and he held his game together on the tougher back nine to win by a shot.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 15th July 2009

By on July 15, 2009 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

After weeks of planning, the Donegal Alzheimer Society Fundraiser is ready for the off and we expect a big turnout this Saturday at Narin. The singles competition is open to ladies and gents and the winner will receive overnight accommodation for two, plus two tickets to see Ireland’s rugby match with South Africa at Croke Park in the autumn. The many other prizes are also very lucrative and we hope that everyone supports this worthy cause.

The members were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Paddy Lalor who enjoyed his golf at Narin over many a long year. We sympathise with his family and friends.

Paul Cooney won the Abbey Hotel single stableford at Narin with 40 points off a nine handicap. His first nine holes were perfunctory indeed, but a fabulous birdie on the tough par five tenth sparked him into life, with further birdies dropping at 13 and 16. The 23 point return on the back nine augmented his overall tally considerably and he had two shots to spare over Ciaran O’Kane in second. Will Bowman, a scratch handicap golfer from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro broke the stableford course record by cruising round in 38 points. A hat-trick of birdies rattled the cup at 8, 9 and 10 and if that wasn’t enough, he did it again at 12, 13 and 14! The four bogeys were unfortunate on what was a whopper of a card, but the gross score of 71 is Will’s parting gift to the course as he returns to the States.

Young Aaron Bennett is one to watch in the coming years, with the teenager winning his first event in the senior ranks with a fine score of 42 points last Wednesday. Practice makes perfect and the grandson of former head green-keeper, Hugh Sharpe has been honing his swing all summer. He was steady enough on his front nine, but it was around the turn that he excelled, scoring seven consecutive three-pointers from the eighth. The 24 points on his back nine allied to the 18 achieved going out gave Aaron 42 points and a one point win over sharpshooter, Finnian O’Doherty whose form continues to impress all and sundry.

Last Sunday’s medal was won by Charlie Tully, demonstrating all the old guile and working the course like a gifted artisan. The tough conditions favoured the accurate drivers and Charlie spent little time searching for lost causes. His eight pars were praiseworthy and when he made an error, he didn’t make the mistake of haemorrhaging shots. Charlie’s win enters him into the matchplay stage of the Golfer of the Year competition which will be played in October. Charlie Bryson chipped in at the third for the second week running and dispelled whatever notions he had entertained of signing his playing partners up with an account at Specsavers.

The club organised a stableford on Monday last and despite the wet weather, a goodly contingent took to the links. Adrian Maguire has been putting in the practice of late and he reaped the reward with an earth-shattering 44 points. The points totals on the nines were identical, with eight pars adorning a great card.

The July Junior Golf Camp is fully booked, but there are still spots remaining on the camp to be held on the 24th and 25th of August. Contact Connor or Daragh at 074-9545107 for details.

Seconded By: Bernie Keeney

Library

The GARC group has a positive meeting to bring the Library committee on board with their plans.
It was decided to start a petition to try and bring the library back to the town.

Sewage Scheme

A letter from Mary Coughlan was read.
The tender documents are with the department and will take approx 4 months to go through. The tender plans will need to be looked at when finished so we know exactly what’s happening and we can make sure the work being done is what’s needed.

Rural Transport

The rural transport scheme is due to start on Friday 12th June and will run every Friday. People will get two and a half hours in the town. It’s €5 return or free for people with a travel card.

Ard Connell

The work has been completed on replacing the water pipes and fixing the footpath. Everyone is happy with the work that was done.

Tidy Town

The All Ireland competition was judged in May and we will find out the results soon.
The Tidy Town competition starts now and runs until the end of the summer. Everyone is asked to take care of the town and be prepared for the judging.
The Garda have been called in to investigate vandalism that took place at the fountain.

Playground

The Loch an iúir playground still hasn’t started and looks like now funding for all projects has gone. Someone from the playground committee will need to attend the next meeting to give an update. Terence Slowey will be asked to follow up on this matter.

Health Centre

The planning permission is close to being granted and is still due to start in August.

Alcohol Abuse Awareness

A programme has started with the Youth Club to discuss the effects of alcohol and substance abuse.

Defibrillator

There is still no place in the town to store the second defibrillator. The Garda Station is seen as the best place and this will be pursued.

GARC

The committee are to meet with the Donegal Mountain Rescue to discuss the use of the old fire station for storage of equipment while GARC work on the future plans for the building.

The next meeting will be 9th July at 9:00pm in the Highlands Hotel
