Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 23rd September 2009

By on September 23, 2009 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

The presentation of prizes for the following competitions will take place in the clubhouse on Saturday, September 26th at 9 p.m.: Diver’s Centra Stroke; Junior, Intermediate & Senior Scratch Cups; Glenside Bacon Medal & Glenties Cup; Pat The Cope T.D. Stableford; D.P. Barry Fourball Betterball; Ardara Golf Society Medal; Glenties Golf Society Stableford; Ryan Developments Stableford; Dr. McCloskey Singles Matchplay; Club Foursomes Matchplay; Clements Matchplay Mixed Shields.

The Club Fundraising Draw will be held after the presentation of prizes.

The final of the Under-16 County Cup is balanced on a knife edge following Narin and Portnoo’s gutsy 2-1 success in the first leg last Sunday. Martin and Margaret Roarty’s young men played superb golf to keep their hungry opponents at bay and it sets up an intriguing second leg this coming Sunday, with Ballybofey and Stranorlar holding home advantage. We wish the lads the very best of luck.

Eddie Gregg is the club matchplay champion following his victory over Rab Brady in the final of the Dr. McCloskey Perpetual Trophy. The victor was in control from the start, striking the ball well and sinking the putts when it mattered. His par on the 4th matched Rab’s bogey five with a shot and from then on, Eddie stretched away from the former international rugby star, with the end coming on the par five 15th. Both players graced the tournament with the quality of their golf throughout, but it’s Eddie who joins the list of winners which goes back to Denis Carbery in 1979.

The ace pairing of Kevin and Deirdre Patton are the Clements Mixed Foursomes Shield winners, with Sean Houston and May McCann the gallant runners-up. The final of the Club Foursomes is scheduled for this Saturday. Michael Naughton and Seamus McDonagh will lock horns with James McGinley and Paul McGinley.

Sean Cafferty eked out a narrow victory in the Ryan Developments competition on Sunday, pipping Robert Farrell of Dublin by virtue of a better back nine. Sean was steady on the way out, amassing 19 points into a headwind. Birdies at both 14 and 15 took the Cavan native to a new level, however, and he eased to 40 points by round’s end. Seamus, the noble sponsor, was in the prizes himself, capturing the back nine with 20 points.

Margaret Barton of Omagh Golf Club was the Wednesday Open winner following her excellent round of 42 points. The 22 handicapper birdied the 3rd and 13th holes in equal nines of 21 points. She had two shots to spare over Mairtín Ó hIarnáin in second.

Connie McGinley enjoyed a two-shot win in the Glenties Golf Society, birdying the 10th, 13th and 16th to race home in 21 points following a fine front nine of 19 points. Kieran Cunnea’s remodelled swing is continuing to impress, taking him on this occasion into the runners-up position.

Our 3TS team of Connor Mallon, Michael Glynn, Goretti Cunningham and Frankie Kennedy played well in the Slieve Russell Ulster qualifier recently, with Connor himself going round in five under par. They missed out by just four points, a poor back nine being blamed on everyone and everything.

Finally, Andrew O’Donnell who is a nephew of Danny McGeehan enjoyed the round of a lifetime two weeks ago when he went head to head with Tiger Woods in the Pro-Am prior to the B.M.W. tournament in the States. The young American plays off 6 handicap and played quite a bit in Narin this past summer. He found Tiger an excellent playing partner and the world number one relaxed him so much that he managed three birdies of his own.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 15th September 2009

By on September 15, 2009 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

Our beloved captain, Michael Glynn enjoys my absences for he won yet another competition while the cat was away. A round of 41 points was impressive enough but to recover from a double-bogey start to reach such a score proved the sanguine obduracy of the man. Five pars on the front nine aided the cause and four more coming home provided a cushion which absorbed the whammies of a quartet of unmentionables. The ageless miracle that is Denis Carbery is threatening category one status yet again and he was aided in this quest by a fine round of 40 points, playing off seven. Some day, when his noble guard is down, he might be coaxed into sharing the secret of his longevity and virtuosity!

Our quintogenarians (plus tax) did not enjoy the first leg of their final tussle with Ballyliffin last weekend. While Charlene and her crew toiled for the sake of the masses in the clubhouse, Pat’s boys, alas, did likewise on the course, coming out the wrong side of a four-one scoreline. Only Denis Carbery and Eamonn McGill were able to outlast their excellent opponents and secure a victory. All is not lost, however, and they have a chance to redeem the situation in the return leg of this Over-Fifties County Final. We wish them every success and with the pressure off a bit, they can really go for it on the day.

With just a week to go, the Committee urges the members to make a special effort to sell as many of their allocated tickets as possible and return the stubs and any unsold tickets. The prizes are lucrative, with a 20-year membership or alternatively a cash prize of 5,000 euro as the first prize. The draw will be held on September 26th and tickets cost 10 euro.

Results:
September 9: Wednesday Open: 1. Michael Glynn (20) 41; 2. Denis Carbery (7) 40; 3. Sheena O’Keeffe (16) 39; 4. Marty McGing (15) 38; Twos: 6 balls

Fixtures:
September 20: Ryan Developments single stableford, open

September 23: Wednesday Open, ladies and gents, single stableford, 20 euro entry for G.U.I. visitors including green fee;

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 8th September 2009

By on September 8, 2009 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

The seventh medal winner of the year hailed from Glenties and a popular winner he was too. Seamus Gildea began the year by winning a PING event in March and he added to that success with a hard-earned victory in the Ardara Golf Society competition. The rain was incessant throughout the day and Seamus got the worst of it early on. Solid driving on the front nine set him up for a good score and despite a few hiccups coming home, Seamus held on for a three under par nett total of 70. I look forward to the speech! He joins Bart Whelan, John Lennon, Charlie Tully, Finnian O’Doherty, Denis Carbery and Alan Elliott in the eight-man draw for the Golfer of the Year matchplay competition to be held in October.

John Molloy won the latest fundraiser with an excellent score of 39 points last Wednesday, cruising through the front nine in two over par and maintaining that standard on the return to finish in a gross score of just four over par.

The Committee urges the holders of those tickets not yet sold to make a special effort to try and generate as much revenue as they can for their club. The prizes are lucrative, with a 20-year membership or alternatively a cash prize of 5,000 euro as the first prize. The draw will be held on September 26th and tickets cost 10 euro.

Naomh Conaill Notes 8th September 2009

Well done to the senior team who have reached the Co semi final beating Ardara in extra time 1-13 to 1-11 after both teams served up another riveting championship encounter in Letterkenny last Sunday evening. The two teams deserve great credit for the sporting way they played the game over the 2 days. They now meet Kilcar in the semi final this Sunday at 3pm in Donegal Town.

The Minors play Naomh Mhuire in the Regional final on the Saturday 19th Sept.

Our U10 team performed very well in the annual Desi Hill Memorial U10 tournament hosted by the St. Teresa’s Club in Belfast last Saturday. They won their group in convincing fashion overcoming Cushendall Ruairi Ogs (Antrim), Eoghan Rua’s (Tyrone) and Gort na Mona (Antrim). In the quarter-final they were pitted against old adversaries, Carryduff from Down and emerged victorious after a tough encounter with a two point winning margin. In the semi-final they had a more comfortable win over Coleraine from Derry. The final was an all Donegal affair between ourselves and St Eunans and in a very competitive game it was the Letterkenny lads who shaded it at the final whistle by the narrowest of margins. A big thank you to the U10 coaches and the parents of the children for transporting the children to Belfast, as these inter county, club tournaments are very benificial to the youngsters ongoing development. We also wish to sincerely thank Niall Gallagher who kindly sponsored a meal for the U10s on their journey home.

Well done to Ethan O’Donnell who was the Club winner of the U12 Skills Competition. Ethan went on to represent the Club in the McShane Travel County Skills Finals in Convoy last Friday, where he performed admirably, finishing in a very credible sixth place and only just missing on Ulster qualification as the top five qualify.

The U13s are due to play their first game this Saturday at home to Dungloe at 11am.

The club held a very sucessful Golf Classic last Saturday at Narin/Portnoo Golf Club with 45 teams taking part.We would like to thank anyone who helped in anyway in the running of the day and to all who entered teams and sponsored Tees

The Naomh Conaill/Harvest Fair 30K Cycle Challage which takes place this Sunday will now start at 11am.

There was no winner of last weeks lotto Two prizes of 50 Euro went to Shane Mc Loone, Glenties and Mary McGill, Ardara. The numbers drawn were 10,14,16,27. The jackpot now stands at 3,000 Euro.
