Employers please note.
Treat your staff to a voucher without being liable for PAYE and PRSI.
How? Where an employer provides an employee with a small benefit (not exceeding €250.00)   PAYE and PRSI need not be applied to that benefit. No more than one such benefit given to an employee in a Tax Year will qualify for such treatment. Where a benefit exceeds €250.00 the full value of the benefit is subjected to PAYE and PRSI. Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 11th November 2009

By on November 11, 2009 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

The Ladies versus Gents match entered the club’s folklore last Saturday, as issues arose akin to those which have exercised the finest legal brains in Portmarnock or South Africa. What indeed constitutes a member of the fair sex? I’m certainly not the authority on the subject but Mr. Naughton called the shots as usual; when he summoned ‘Michelle’ and Channelle’, eyebrows were raised, eyes squinted and shoulders shrugged. The light was poor and I guess allowances were made, especially considering the combined ages of the relative teams. The matched pairings set off, with the club Pro leading the gents with his customary élan. His confident aura quickly waned and several others of his gender also came a cropper. ‘Michelle’ and ‘Chanelle’ justified their selection in making short work of their male opponents, though I cannot speculate on what kind of congratulatory gesture was made at the end of the tussle. When the reckoning was complete, it was the gents who had triumphed and it’s back to the drawing board for Eileen and her crew. Perhaps ‘Michelle’ and Channelle’ have golfing girlfriends who might render their services on the next occasion!

The Bank Holiday Scramble featured high class scoring, with the Ardara trio of Sean Whyte, Don Earley and Shane Whittington shooting seven birdies and an eagle at 18 for a nett score of 61.2. They were six under par for the last six holes, golf of the highest order indeed!

Sunday’s competition was sponsored by Value Centre Cash & Carry & B.G.W. and rumours of a big-shooting Killybegs man floated around the clubhouse, while he was still out on the course. Mickey Campbell carded just a solitary six on his card, the rest consisting of six threes, five fours and six fives for a one over par gross total of 74. He had the best front nine score, the best back nine and a massive six points to spare over Fr. Adrian Gavigan in second. His 47 points was one of the best scores in recent years, though it was still four short of John Molloy’s record score of 1998. John, though, was playing off 20 at the time, while Mickey had eight shots less to play around with!

The Charael Catering event postponed last Sunday week will be played this weekend. Last Wednesday’s event was cancelled.

The Ping PGA Ulster Alliance two-day outing at Narin & Portnoo was very successful, with golfers from all over Ulster enjoying for the most part the bracing weather and fine links conditions. Damian Mooney won the first day’s prize with 39 points, while John Dolan won his first Alliance outing on day two. Club members featured strongly, with Gerry Feeney winning the individual amateur award on the second day. The club thanks Connor for all his work in getting the event to Narin and compliment Phil Posnett and his team for their efficient handling of the tournament.

Day One: Professionals: 1. Damian Mooney, Unattached, 39 pts.; Joint 2. Kevin Dorrian, Downpatrick Golf Centre & Connor Mallon, Narin & Portnoo, 38 pts.; Amateurs: 1. Aaron O’Rorke, Dunmurry, (8) 40 pts.; Team: 89 pts – Kevin Dorrian (Downpatrick Golf Centre), Stephen McVeigh (18) (Bright Castle), Michael Martin (19) & John Quinn (14) (both Narin & Portnoo); Amateur gross: 1. Philip Posnett, Shandon Park (4) 33 pts.

Day Two: Professionals: John Dolan, Dunmurry 33 pts.; 2. Chris McVitty, Bundoran, 31 pts.; Amateurs: 1. Gerry Feeney, Narin & Portnoo 37 pts.; Team: 81 pts – Chris McVitty, Eamon Tunney (13), ‘Dodie’ Maguire (16) & Joe O’Hara (10) (all Bundoran); Amateur gross: Colin Steele (1) Ballyclare 25 pts.;

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 8th November 2009

By on November 8, 2009 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

I write this missive while Day One scores are being returned in the Ulster PGA Alliance (sponsored by PING) meeting at Narin in which several local golfers are featuring prominently on the electronic scoreboard. Mr. Naughton is wearing the grin of a man who feels good about his game (at least I hope that’s what it means) while Connor Mallon has the hand-dog expression of a guy who’s left something out on the course! More of that next week, but it’s nice to see the likes of two-time Narin and Portnoo Pro-Am champion, Damian Mooney back to test himself against the course when the weather is not clad in its summer finery.

Last Wednesday’s open fundraiser saw one of the stars of yesteryear rediscover the magic which brought him victories in the Dr. McCloskey singles matchplay in 2001 and 2002. Tony Dooley was unstoppable back then, with a unique putting action which made him one of the best with the straight-faced club. Tony looked at the hole instead of the ball while he struck the putt and he had the method down to a fine art. Somewhere along the way, he abandoned this style and the wins dried up. A few weeks ago, he reverted back and lo and behold, he won his first tournament of 2009. His nines were equivalent in a round of 40 points, with a little birdie gracing the card at the 16th. The Tony of old is back!

The Golfer of the Year competition sponsored by PGA Professional, Connor Mallon has reached the semi-final stage where Alan Elliott will face Seamus Gildea, while Charlie Tully matches up with Bart Whelan. It’s hard to pick a winner out of that lot and I wish them all well.

The Ladies versus Gents match had to be cancelled a week ago due to the bad weather, as was the Charael Catering stroke event on Sunday.

The draw has been made for the Winter Pairs Matchplay and details may be found in the Pro-Shop.

Results:
October 28: Wednesday Open

1. Tony Dooley (16) 40; 2. Aaron Bennett (15) 39 b.o.t.; 3. John Simpson (16) 39 b.o.t. C.S.S. 72; Twos: 5 balls each

Fixtures:
November 8: Value Centre Cash & Carry & B.G.W. single stableford, open

November 11: Wednesday Open, ladies and gents, single stableford, 20 euro entry for G.U.I. visitors including green fee;
