Health Centre Crisis

By on April 29, 2010 | Category: News,Parish Council | No Comments

With the obvious lack of movement on the new health centre it has again become the number one priority for the Parish Council. The project has once again stalled after continued assurances from all sides that the project was moving forward. It now seems that the initial funding promised has disappeared. The HSE are saying that the funding was never secured in the first place while the government are saying that the funding was allocated for the project and the problem is with the HSE. Even though the current Health Centre has been condemned by the HSE we are still expected to use it. Local representatives have pushed for the project to move forward and have been asking questions as to what’s happening but have got no answers in return.

It is now time that the community backed the project again. A meeting will be held on Thursday 6th May in the Community Centre at 9pm to discuss what future actions need to be taken to get the project back on track.

Here is a brief timeline of the project so far:

W17Q255 – Cllr. David Alcorn
“Could I have an update on the new Primary Care Centre for Glenties, Co. Donegal, and what is the timescale on the erection of this project?”

HSE Reply:
The new Primary Care Centre for Glenties is currently at stage 2 approval and drawings are with the HSE for user consultation and sign off. The planning application is programmed for December 2008 with a tender period programmed for April 2009. It is hoped that work will commence in June 2009 and that the centre will be complete by July 2010.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 27th April 2010

By on April 27, 2010 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

Entries are being taken for the annual two-day Pro-Am to be played on June 26th and 27th. The entry fee remains at 500 euro per team of three. Entries will be open to club members until April 30th and over 40 teams are in already.

The club’s Ulster Fourball team gave it their best shot but sadly came up just short in their second leg match against Portsalon. Three-two down from the first leg, Portsalon would have fancied their chances at home and despite a fine win from Pat Connaghan and Connell Gavigan and a half from Patsy Harkin and Hugh Francis Shovlin, it proved too high a mountain to climb. Kevin Gilgunn was a centimetre away from gaining a great half in his and Manus Boyle’s match but the napp won the battle. We wish Portsalon well and commiserate with our team members and captain.

James Keeney enjoyed a splendid round of 42 points last Wednesday which was just about enough to win the weekly mid-week competition. Out in a level twos 18 points, the Glenties native scorched through the back nine, recording birdies at 11 and 16 and pars at 12, 13, 15 and 17. But for the dubious pleasure of the presence of the P.R.O. on the 18th green, he would probably have parred it as well!

Sean Hanrahan finished runner-up to James Keeney on Wednesday and was there again on Sunday, winning his category with 37 points. The overall winner on the day was John Bán Gallagher, a man used to winning big competitions and taking full advantage of the benign conditions at present. His nines were fairly equal, with 21 coming on the front nine. Birdies were scarce, with just the solitary tweet on 14, but the 12 pars more than compensated. Cathal Donoghue returned to the podium in taking second and there’s surely more to come from this habitual winner. Our money man, John Malone, filled the final runner-up position and it’s good to see this hard-working officer focusing on his golf for a change!

New deadlines have been fixed for the Winter Matchplay closing stages and those still involved should ring the club for details. The entry sheets for the Spring Foursomes. Clements Mixed Foursomes and Dr. McCloskey Matchplay are posted in the clubhouse and players should enter soon.

Mary Mullane

Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday evening. Fr. Pat Prendergast celebrated Requiem Mass on Saturday morning. Members of the Mannering family did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by John F. O’Donnell and other members of the Mannering family. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Mary is survived by her brother, Mathew, sister-in-law, Rose, nieces, nephews, grandnieces / nephews, great grandnieces / nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Originally from Scotland, Mary came to live in Mullantyboyle in the mid 70s after she retired from teaching. She lived there until she moved to her brother’s home in Gortlosk in recent years.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 19th April 2010

By on April 19, 2010 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

Our Ulster Cup side were the stars of the weekend, defeating fancied Ormeau Golf Club over the two legs of this first round clash. Having won three matches in Belfast, the lads were confident of progressing in the home leg and they duly got the required four and a half points. We congratulate them on their success and wish them well in the next round against either Warrenpoint or Virginia. Ormeau were gallant competitors, excellent hosts and appreciative guests in Narin.

Entries are being taken for the annual two-day Pro-Am to be played on June 26th and 27th. The entry fee remains at 500 euro per team of three. Entries will be open to club members until April 30th.

Sean McGinley continued in his rich vein of form in Sunday’s Dolmen Centre event. The Killybegs golfer had finished runner-up in last Wednesday’s Open and so was eager to go one better in this 3golf competition national qualifier. His front nine was nothing to rave about, but after pars on 10, 12, 13 and 14, he knew that a good finish would set a fine target on the day. He did just that and had the best finish of several golfers who also finished on the same 40 point total. Runner-up, Seamus McGarvey had a notable eagle on the par four eighth.

Tom Rawdon had no sooner sat down in his seat after two walks to the podium during the recent presentation than he was at it again, returning an excellent 40 points in the Wednesday Open. The damage was done on the back nine once again, with a birdie on 13 adorning all the other good golf coming home. He had two shots to spare over Sean McGinley in second.

Rumours have swept the club that a mature golfer shot 49 points last week in a friendly fourball. It is difficult to test the veracity of this particular report but my sources are usually reliable and never biased. I send my good wishes to the Glen man in question!

Our professional, Connor Mallon managed to somehow return from New York where he was promoting the golf club for a week or so. Together with his trip to the World Golf Fair in Florida earlier in the year, Connor is working hard to realise extra green fees and business opportunities for the club in the years ahead. We have learned on the grapevine that his trojan efforts at the club have not gone unnoticed at the Park and we congratulate him on his invitation to meet the President at Arás an Uachtaráin.

The entry sheets for the Spring Foursomes. Clements Mixed Foursomes and Dr. McCloskey Matchplay have been posted in the clubhouse.

Members are also advised that they must have played in four sponsored events in 2010 in order to win the Captain’s Prize in August.

Results:
April 18: Dolmen Centre stableford and 3golf qualifier: 1. Sean McGinley (16) 40 b.o.t.; 2. Seamus McGarvey (11) 40 b.o.t.; 3. Brian McGonagle (13) 40 b.o.t.; Cat A Columba Gavigan (11) 40; Cat B Paddy Breslin (13) 38; Cat C John Callaghan (23) 37; Nines: Kieran Cunnea (17) 21; Pauric O’Donnell (22) 23; CSS 73; Twos: 4 balls each.
April 14: Wednesday Open: 1. Tom Rawdon (19) 40; 2. Sean McGinley (17) 38; 3. Tony Dooley (16) 37 b.o.t.; Twos: 5 balls.

Naomh Conaill Notes 19th April 2010

By on April 19, 2010 | Category: Naomh Conaill,News | No Comments

Well done to the Donegal U21 team on reaching the All Ireland Final and once more Jim, Leo, Dermott and Ciaran did the club and county proud. They now meet the Dubs in the final which will bring back memories of 92 and we hope we can get the same result.

This Saturday night the club hosts the eagerly awaited Strictly Come Dancing in The Highlands Hotel and it promises to be one of the highlights of the year as the dancers have been putting in a lot of hard work and long hours rehearsing for the night and we wish them all the best of luck. The stars of the show are Alana Molloy, Bridget Kee, Grannie Boyle, Brid Mc Gill, Fiona Quinn, Brenda Reid, Michelle Flannery, Helen Mc Nelis, Seamus Mc Kelvey, Billy McInnes, Douglas Gallagher, Anthony Thompson, Martin Mc Dyer, Kieran Kennedy, Stephen McGrath and Declan Bonner. The tickets sold out very early on and admittance on the night is by TICKET only. There will be Disco afterwards and admittance is 10 Euro. There will be a meeting of everyone that is helping out on the night in The Highlands on Friday at 7pm.

There will be excuetive meeting on Thursday 22nd April at 9pm in the clubhouse. The monthly club meeting will be on Monday night at 9pm in the clubhouse.

There was no winner of last weeks lotto. Two prizes of 50 Euro went to Teresa Cunningham, Glenties and Jane and William Cunningham, Ardara. The numbers drawn were 3,18,20,23. The jackpot now stands at 5,900 Euro.

The seniors picked up their first league points of the year after a 7 point victory at home to Termon last Sunday and the reserves kept up their very impressive start to the season beating Termon 1-12 to 0-8. Both teams are due to play St Eunans this Sunday in Letterkenny.

The 3rd team unbeaten run came to a end when they were beat by Aodh Ruadh in Ballyshannon last Friday evening.

The Minors play their first league game at home to Ardara this Friday at 7pm.

The U16s beat Naomh Brid in Glenties last Friday 1-6 to 0-7. They are now through to the Regional league final where they will meet Four Masters which is due to be played on 30th April

Our U12s played host to Termon in a Southern Board sponsored U12 Go Games exhibition match last Sunday following the Senior game. The Minor Board wish to sincerely thank the parents who made the tea and sandwiches for all in attendance.

Regarding the games themselves the general agreement of those present, coaches, parents and more importantly the older players was very negative indeed and it is difficult to understand why other counties can incorporate the small sided Go Games format at U12 level into mini league structures (which is recommended by Croke Park for this age), yet in this county we are running it in a totally aimless manner. It is going to be a very difficult task indeed for coaches to keep our eleven and twelve year olds motivated and interested in our national games. The U13s had a very comprehensive victory away to St Nauls last Monday evening. There next game is at home to Aodh Ruadh on Monday 3rd May.

Our first scheduled U12 Go Games is away to Ardara, this Monday 26th.

The U12 girls have their first blitz in Mountcharles this Saturday. Bus leaving the clubhouse at 10.15am sharp. The Minors had a good victory against Glen last Tuesday while the senior ladies lost at home to Convoy last Sunday. The Ladies church gate collection raised a grand total of 1,091 Euro.
