Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 29th June 2010

By on June 29, 2010 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

Damian Mooney has won the Harcourt Hotel Narin and Portnoo Pro-Am on three separate occasions, with power-driving such as this a major feature.

The winning team at the Harcourt Hotel Narin and Portnoo Pro-Am were Sean Rodgers, Pauric McHugh, Charlene McHugh (team sponsor), Brian McGill (Harcourt Hotel), Patsy Harkin and Michael Kennedy (team sponsor).

Pictured at the presentation of prizes at the Harcourt Hotel Narin and Portnoo Pro-Am were club captain, Seamus McDonagh, winner, Damian Mooney, PGA Secretary, Michael McCumiskey and PGA Captain, Eamonn Logue.

As the club captain is wont to opine, it was déjà vu all over again at Narin and Portnoo Golf Club! The 2010 Harcourt Hotel Pro-Am champion, Damian Mooney had made the short walk to the winner’s podium on two previous occasions in 2007 and 2008 and delivered the obligatory victor’s oration to the assembled multitude. This one, though, may have been the sweetest of the lot, coming as it did on a day when the field was blown away by the stiff breeze which rent many a card and left dreams scattered amidst the marram and bent. The Saturday leaders fell back as the day progressed, but Mooney encapsulated the Highlander motto that ‘there can only be one’!

The Belfast mega-hitter paid tribute to our club pro, Connor Mallon, and organiser, Conal Keeney, without whose foresight the Pro-Am would never see the light of day. He remarked on the positive atmosphere in Narin, the welcoming faces year after year, the fine catering, the craic and the raucous laughter. The course was much praised, the presentation of which was superlative in adverse weather conditions.

The modest tour pro did not wax lyrical about his own strengths, of which there are many. Whatever about his keen short game, it’s the long hitting which draws the gallery. Young lads stood and watched with jaws agape as Damian teed up and fired exocet after exocet down the parched links fairways. By illustration, the team playing behind him had to wait on the fifth fairway while he drove to the sixth green, using the fifth green as his line to this tough dog-leg par four! The sight of him standing on the high mound behind the fifth green watching for the sixth green to clear will prove an indelible one for those who witnessed it. He made it to the green surrounds each time, prodigious hitting by anyone’s standard. His drive to the par five second on Sunday left him adjacent to the first of three bunkers protecting this almost island green, a distance of 400 metres from swish to rest. His rounds of 71 and 72 for a total of 143 gave the popular golfer a two stoke victory over first round leaders, Eamonn Brady and Garry Cullen. Both had shot 68s on day one when the weather was scorching and the conditions passive. Their 77s on day two illustrated the vagaries of a links course. Glen Robinson shot a mighty 70 on Sunday, the lowest score of the day.

The team event was won appropriately enough by Charael Catering, with Patsy Harkin, Pauric McHugh and Sean Rodgers joining forces with professional, Martin McTernan for a six point win.

European Tour player and 2007 runner-up, Simon Thornton had been due to tee up, but had to phone the club late as he got into the BMW International Open at Munich. He made the most of his chance, finishing 9th to win 42,400 euro! Damian Mooney had to settle for somewhat less, but I think his record hat-trick of Pro-Am titles at Narin and Portnoo Golf Club will warm the cockles of the big man with the big heart and the game to match.
It may seem an after-thought after the dynamism of the weekend’s golf but Patrick Boyle deserves his place in the limelight following his victory in the most recent Wednesday Open. Nines of 20 and 19 points demonstrated admirable consistency, with birdies on 4 and 14 adorning a fine performance.

Result: Professionals: 1. Damian Mooney 71/72, 143; 2. Eamonn Brady (Clontarf) 68/77, Garry Cullen (Beaverstown) 68/77, 142; 4. Glen Robinson (St. Helen’s Bay) 76/70, 146; Team: 1. Patsy Harkin, Pauric McHugh, Sean Rodgers, Martin McTernan (Co. Sligo) 94/90, 184;
Wednesday Open, June 23: 1. Patrick Boyle (11) 39; 2. Marty McGing (15) 38; 3. Tony Boner (18) 37; CSS 73; Twos: 8 balls.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 25th June 2010

Youth had its fling once again last Sunday in the latest monthly medal, sponsored by Mickey’s Express Stop. Following on from Finnian O’Doherty’s excellent performance in the President’s Prize, Aaron Bennett shot a six over par gross round of 79 to win by a shot from former rugby star, Rab Brady. Amazingly, the big-hitting teenager didn’t pick up a birdie all day, but the twelve pars were mighty impressive nonetheless.

Joseph O’Boyle watched Manus Boyle Snr. shoot a whopping 48 points several weeks ago and obviously decided to get in on the act himself. His score last Wednesday came up just one point short, featuring golf of the highest quality and inspiring Tony Boner and Tom Glynn to study the O’Boyle swing with even more keenness than before. Eleven under par is some score and the handicap has accordingly been much reduced!

This weekend sees our annual Pro-Am swing into action and we wish all the competitors every success. Some of the best professional golfers in Ireland will be coming to Narin and who knows, maybe there will be a budding Graeme McDowell among them. All are welcome to watch the golf and good weather is forecast! The Harcourt Hotel has come on board once more as the main sponsor and the club is extremely grateful.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 15th June 2010

The President’s Prize was presented by Bart Whelan to Pat O’Gorman of Strabane last Sunday night. Over 150 golfers participated, ignoring the inclement weather present for much of the day. Pat avoided much of the deluge, thanks in no small part to some fancy footwork newly acquired on the dance floor! His front nine was ordinary, a blank on the 7th upsetting the apple cart after a steady start. Then, as usually happens, a putt dropped and momentum gradually built. The birdie on the par five 10th was followed by another on 13 and the three successive closing pars sealed an excellent back nine of 24 points. Bart spoke eloquently as always at the presentation ceremony, with golfers present keeping their heads bowed like recalcitrant children, lest he make eye contact and mention them in his hilarious discourse! He thanked all those responsible for the success of his first President’s Day and reserved particular praise for the catering staff who served a lovely buffet and looked after the members and guests so well. Pat commented that he had been told of his success in the middle of his Cha-cha practice (of which he is reputed to be a fine exponent), but no-one displayed defter footwork than the president himself, as he dodged verbal digs launched by several prize-winners, coming back with retort time after time. We look forward already to next year’s event and wish Bart well for the rest of the golfing season.

Finnian O’Doherty went round in level gross playing off a four handicap to achieve his second runner-up finish in this ‘major’ in successive years. The youngster had been part of the scramble team which won on Bank Holiday Monday. He was ably assisted by C. Flood, Paddy Flood and M. Carr who together totted up eight birdies for a gross 67, nett 58.3.

Hughie Moore succeeded his playing pal, Manus Boyle Snr. as the winner of the weekly Open with the customary big score usually achieved every Wednesday. His tally of 43 featured nines of 20 and 23 points respectively, the bulk of his success coming from 11 pars and a birdie at the last.

The club’s Pierce Purcell team were very unfortunate to lose their last 16 clash with Castleblayney last Saturday in Enniskillen. Michael Naughton and Joe Conneely had the usual big win, and when Bart Whelan and Sean Whyte did likewise, hopes were high that the side would progress. But the Monaghan lads fought back to win the remaining matches, with the decider ending on the 18th green. The team captain, Patrick Boyle wishes to thank all those who played for the club in the competition this year and congratulates them on their performances in qualifying and beyond.

The Donegal League team needed two and a half matches in Rosapenna to progress, but the home team were in exemplary form, winning four of the matches played, with Dominic Mullin and Cathal Donoghue our winners on the day. We wish both Castleblayney and Rosapenna well in their future matches.
We sympathise with Willie Molloy on the recent passing of his mother, Theresa. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

Good luck to our U13 team and management who play St Eunans in the Co Final this Friday at 7.30pm in Mac Cumhaill Park. This is a repeat of last years U12 decider and we hope that a big support will travel to cheer on these dedicated young players. They reached the final after they had a very convincing win over Cloich cheann Fhaola in the County semi-final last Friday in Glenswilly.

The U-14s get the league campaign underway this Monday 14th with a home game against Four Masters at 7.30pm.

The U10s had 2 blitzes last week in Glencolmcille on Saturday and Gaoth Dobhair on Monday and both days the A and B teams performed very well.

The Seniors and Reserves both lost out away to St Eunans in the league last Saturday. They are away to Kilcar in the 2nd leg of the championship this Saturday at 5.30pm and 7pm. Both teams need to win to stay in the championship. The 3rds had a 1 point victory at home to Pettigo in the league last Sunday.

The first draw in the Club 200 was held at last weeks monthly club meeting and the following were the winners 1st prize of 500 Euro went to Ann Marie Brennan, Ardara and 5 prizes of 100 Euro went to Jonh Bonner, Donal Boyle, Muriel Hegarty, Peadar Doherty, Fintown and Packie Gildea. Congratulations to Maura Kelly, Termon who won the Lotto jackpot of 6,500 Euro last week. The numbers drawn were 1,10,17,23. The jackpot this week is 2,000 Euro.

The new club jersey is now on sale in Mc Glincheys.
