Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 26th July 2010

By on July 26, 2010 | Category: Narin & Portnoo Golf Club,News | No Comments

It’s been busy at Narin while the scribe has been tanning his hide! Our junior team defeated Northwest in the Fred Daly Plate. The youngsters only needed a point and a half in the away match to progress and this was duly achieved by a confident outfit. Jamie McGroary was drafted in to the team and performed admirably, as did all the Portnoo boys. They now face Letterkenny in the second round, with the home leg on Sunday and the return on Monday.

The club’s senior team overcame Ballyliffin in their first round match, adding three and a half matches to the two won in the away tussle. Bart has the lads in strict training in preparation for the next round and we wish them well. Playing for the club were Eamonn McGill, Willie Quinn, Denis Carbery, James Quinn, Patrick Boyle, Seamus McGarvey, J.P. Byrne, Neily Gildea, James Keeney and Cathal Donaghue.

The Inter Districts was won by an Ulster selection and the tournament proved very enjoyable, with a large number participating. Gratitude must be extended to those who organized the respective teams on the day.

John McBride and Seamus Ryan won the last two Wednesday Opens with fine scores in mixed weather conditions. Last Wednesday’s event was cancelled due to the deluge. The Sunday competitions have been well supported, with John Callaghan winning the Glenties Golf Society July medal, thereby qualifying for the Golfer of the Year play-off in October. His score of 65 nett was eight below his handicap, a prodigious feat and he proved a worthy winner. Kieran Gallagher’s hole-in-one at the 7th proved equally meritorious. Des Turley won the D&D Insurance event with 40 points, pipping fast-improving Aaron Bennett on a break-off-tie. The Seamus Ryan Developments stroke event saw Anthony Harkin come good for Rosbeg, a wee birdie on the 8th the highlight of the round. Ross Colhoun won the special event played on July 12th with a fine score of 40 points.

Congratulations are extended to Rena Boyle on her fine victory in the Lady Captain’s Prize on Saturday. Sean Rodgers won Margaret Roarty’s Prize to the Gents with 33 points played over 16 holes. After that fabulous night on Saturday last, the pace doesn’t drop at all, with the clubhouse hosting music for three nights this weekend.

The members sympathise with Anthony Molloy on the recent death of his mum, Nora. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
