Glenties Playground Closed

It is with regret that Glenties Playground Committee has taken the decision to close the Playground.

It is unfortunate that our efforts to get Donegal County Council to honour their obligation to put the Playground under their authority has been unsuccessful to date. This is unacceptable and left us with no choice but to close it especially in the light of other playgrounds being funded for maintenance and insurance in this electoral area.

At this point, we ask that all parents and guardians make representations to their local representatives to rectify this situation as soon as possible.

Councillor Molloy Glenties Report 8th July 2018

document stage and it is expected that this stage will be tendered by the end of October
this year.

Councillor Molloy has been told that the surface dressing is complete or near completion
on the Glen Road from Molloys to Ardun and Silverhill Upper. He has pleaded that the
final Section at Silverhill be completed as soon as possible when funds become available.
Surface dressing is also taking place on Sections of the Kilkenny Road and at
Loughderryduff, Portnoo. He has been informed that Restoration Improvement Works are
taking place or have been completed at Glenties, Tievelough to Meenavale, Glenties to
Fintown, Glen Road to the Graveyard, Mullantyboyle, Moore’s Brae, parts of Cleengort
Road and from Fintown to Meenaroy and from Morgans Shop to Lackagh in Portnoo.

Paul Dawson’s MS Journey – An update from Julie Dawson
We have had the best news ever!  Paul’s bone marrow is starting to produce new stem cells.  The treatment has worked!  Paul is our of immediate danger and as you are reading this we will be making our way back home to Glenties to begin the long road to recovery.

This has been an incredible journey, the hardest thing Paul and I have ever done and hopefully ever will do again.  But today, we can start to look forward to a future instead of worrying what it might hold.  Paul’s Neurologist didn’t want Paul to have this treatment as it was too high a risk for his level of MS, i9n fact he told us to prepare for Paul to come home in a 6X4 box!!  We had to convince the Doctors in India to allow Paul to have the treatment, as again he was high risk but Paul had decided that no matter how high the risk factor, it was one he was willing to take instead of being scared what tomorrow may bring.  Now we know that we have about another ten years without having those worries.  Yes it is a fact that Paul will not walk again and yes Paul’s MS will not improve but it will STOP IT for ten years and that we can’t even put into words.

People think MS is about legs, Paul can’t walk, he’s in a wheelchair, but it’s about much more than that.  The things no one could imagine, the things that go on behind closed doors.  MS has robbed us of many many things – the ability for Paul to kick a ball around with our children when they were young, to go for a walk on the beach with them. to walk upstairs in our home and tuck them in at night, to dance!  We are determined that it won’t take any more things away from us.  We now have a future filled with hope instead of dread and we couldn’t have done it without you guys, you made this possible for us.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

The first 3 months of Paul’s recovery will be in isolation at home seeing only close family, in 3-6 months Paul will be able to see friends, at 6-9 months he will be able to go out into small groups and finally at 9-12 months Paul will be allowed into crowded areas!  So in 12 months time we have a lot of celebrating to do.  Paul will have reached 50 during his isolation period and I will celebrate my 50th in October 2018 – it will also be the 1st anniversary of Paul’s treatment and the first time Paul will be able to be around everyone, so I know it’s a long way off but we will be holding a massive party and would love it if every one of you would join us in celebrating everything with us.

St Connell’s Church
Your help would be appreciated in helping us to compile the 2018 list for Sunday Collection Envelopes.  Any new parishioner who would like a box of envelopes, or any parishioner who has changed address since this time last year, should leave their name and address in the Sacristy after any of the Masses, or telephone the Parochial House on 074 9551117.  We would also ask that those that normally distribute the envelopes would contact either Fr Gerard after Mass or the Parochial House to confirm that they are able to do so again this year or if anyone else wishes to help with this task, please feel free to do so.  Thank you.

As and from 1st January, it would be appreciated if all Church Gate collections are taken up at the entrance gates alone rather than outside the door of the Church as is presently the practice.  This is in keeping with the conditions of the permits granted by An Garda Siochana and of the practice pertaining to other Church Gate collections nationwide.  This excludes the St Vincent de Paul Society as it is a Church affiliate.  Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Glenties Community Development Group
We are pleased to announce that this year Glenties will be having a parade on St Patrick’s Day – with a twist!  The difference in this year’s parade is that it will take place at 12:01a.m.  Yes, that’s right folks – one minute past midnight which will make it the first parade in Ireland on St Patrick’s Day 2017.  The decision was made to hold the parade at this time as it was proving impossible to secure any marching bands at any other time during the day as they had already been snapped up by other established event holders throughout the county.  We have managed to secure 4 bands and they are delighted with the idea of a midnight parade.  We have a large amount of floats taking part which will all be illuminated together with the marching bands and fancy dress participants for greater effect and in addition we will be turning the town green for the night to create an amazing green extravaganza for everyone.  Your support in such events is always paramount, so get your thinking caps on (green ones preferred) and get involved in what promises to be a big bright green spectacle for all to enjoy!

Enterprise Towns

The Enterprise Town initiative seeks to work with local businesses to plan and deliver a range of activities that will support and generate business in the area. The initiative also involves the wider community and the schools to ensure everyone can get involved and be part of the positive experience that is an Enterprise Town.

Bank of Ireland wants to support the development of smaller communities at both business level and in the wider context, incorporating schools, sports, social and charitable associations. The Enterprise Town initiative has been developed to allow this to happen and, to date, has worked very well in delivering excellent, community led results across the country.

Glenties Notes 17th February 2017

Excitement is building in Glenties as the dates draw near for the newly formed Glenties Musical Theatre production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s much loved Musical Oklahoma!

The curtain goes up on Thursday 23rd February at 8 o’clock in The Community Centre for the first performance with three more at 8 o’clock on 24th,25th and 26th. ‘Oklahoma’ is a show for all the family and tickets can be purchased in Glenties CO-OP or by phoning on 087 0990609.

Will Curly win the hand of Laurey or will surly Jud come between them? Will Ado Annie ever decide who she will marry, the hapless Will or the exotic but unreliable Ali Hakim? Will the Farmers and the Cowboys ever be friends? Book your tickets now and these questions will be answered.

We are thankful for any sponsorship received to date but would welcome further contributions as the expense in putting on a musical of any kind is considerable.
