32nd ANNUAL MACGILL SUMMER SCHOOL & ARTS WEEK

 REFORMING AND REBUILDING OUR STATE

Sunday July 22nd—Friday July 27th

The 2012 MacGill School will be officially opened on Sunday at 8.30 p.m. by the Ambassador of France in Ireland, H.E. Mme Emmanuelle D’Achon, and this will be followed by the Twelfth Annual John Hume Lecture which this year will be delivered by An Tanaiste, Mr Eamon Gilmore TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade and leader of the Labour Party.

During the week there will be generally four sessions on each day at 11.00 a.m., 2.30 p.m., 4.00 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. Up fifty speakers will contribute to this year’s theme, REFORMING AND REBUILDING THE REPUBLIC. Topics for discussion and analysis include:

THE MORIARTY AND MAHON TRIBUNAL REPORTS—HOW WAS IT ALLOWED TO HAPPEN?

POLITICAL CORRUPTION—THE IMPLICATIONS FOR POLITICS AND THE LESSONS

A TRANSPARENT AND ACCOUNTABLE POLITICAL SYSTEM WAS NOT IN PLACE

WHERE ARE LOYALTY TO AND RESPECT FOR OUR STATE?

REFORMING THE FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURES OF GOVERNANCE OF OUR REPUBLIC

THE FUTURE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN IRELAND?

OUR FIRST PREFERENCE—THE NEED TO REFORM OUR ELECTORAL SYSTEM

IS LOCAL GOVERNMENT THE KEY TO REFORM OF OUR POLITICAL SYSTEM AND CULTURE?

A BROAD AGENDA OF REFORM FOR THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION

THE MEDIA AND DEMOCRACY—RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES?

THE FUTURE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN IRELAND?

PUBLIC SERVICE REFORM—THE BALANCE SHEET?

WITH HUGE DEBT AND RESULTING AUSTERITY IS SERIOUS ECONOMIC GROWTH POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE?

THE MEDIA AND DEMOCRACY—RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES?

THE PROSPECTS FOR THE IRISH ECONOMY?

THE EUROZONE IN CRISIS—IS FISCAL UNION THE ONLY REAL SOLUTION?

WITHOUT SUSTAINED REFORM OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE AND OF POLITICS FULL ECONOMIC RECOVERY WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE

CHANGING THE NATION

‘Change Nation’, in association with the ASHOKA organisation is an extraordinary group of young social entrepreneurs who have innovative plans and radically new thinking to tackle problems in education, health, environment, economic development and citizen participation. Three sessions at MacGill with national and international contributors will reveal the creativity, energy and practical realism of these young people: Tearing Down the Walls—Reforming and Rebuilding with Cross-Sector Collaboration, Skills For A 21st Century Ireland and Reframing Values.
