I was wondering if Annie O’Donnell, who just turned 100 years young, or anyone else in Glenties, would remember Patrick O’Donnell, son of Mary(Carr)O’Donnell and Michael O’Donnell? They lived in Meenalargen at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Patrick had brothers and sisters that did not come to America. Would be great to find relatives. He was my grandfather.

I have been doing research on the Molloy side of my family. My grandfather peters mother was a monaghan her mother was and O’donnell. My grand father used to visit O’Donnell cousins in Glenties in the 50s We have a picture of one of his cousins on a horse and annother of my grandfather outside a quaint irish cottage in glenties I wondered if he is related to Annie. Can you please get in touch as I am starting to research my Monaghan O’Donnell ancestors kind regards Jane

Jane: I have been able to trace my side of the O’Donnell’s to my Great Grandparents Michael and Mary(Carr) O’Donnell. They lived in Meenalargin. I know that there are brothers and sisters but I do not know who and where. My grandfathers brother, Joe O’Donnell came to Phila. and settled down there and had a family but I can find no trace of them

Hi, I was in Glenties at the weekend my dad was born there in 1933 and was one of ten children, his mother died when he was a young child. I wonder if he could be the cousin on a horse, he used to tell me a story about being sponsored to be a jockey. I would love to get any connection to his family the siblings that I can recall are Joan, Maureen, Kathleen, Seamus and Charlie. His grandfather was a train engine driver I think.

Dear Mary O’Donnell I’m just starting to carry out some research into my mother’s family and came across your posting about your father’s family. I think we are probably cousins – Hello! My mother – Kathleen O’Donnell – was a very private person and my sister and I know very little about her childhood and her original family. We do know, however, that she was the eldest girl in a large family, with sisters, Joan and Maureen, brothers, Seamus, Brendan (?) Charlie, Michael, and another brother, Kevin whom I understand died when very young. Kathleen was born in 1926 and her father, Jim, had some connection to the railways. I met my (our?) uncle Michael for the first time this week with his daughter, which was lovely and it made me realise just how little I knew about my mother. Do get in touch if you would like. Kind regards Elizabeth Lawlor

Hi Frank, Thanks for the reply alot of my family emigrated to Philadelphia, I received my great grandfathers Bernard Mulloys last passport application in 1924 to come home to Scotland to visit his family now I am saying home it never really was his home as he lived in Meenavally Ardara and then onto Philadelphia, the last address I have for him Simpson Lacawanna Pa, There is a board called Philadelphia census lookups in genoforum you could maybe look at that there are all the Donegal surnames on that including Malloy Gallagher, shoevlins, O’Donnells, Byrnes etc Hope you are well Jane

Hi, My great grandmother was Susan O’Donnell from Glenties. She married Condy Campbell of Gortlosk, Kilraine in 1870 in Glenties. I know she had brothers Edward and Bernard. I was wondering if this is the same O’Donnell family connected to the hotel on Main St. Some family names are Malloy, McDevitt, Brown, Tolan, Brennan. She and her family came to Pennsylvania in 1883. Her children are James, Cornelius, Mary, Maggie,John, Anthony, Hugh,Joseph. I would love to see a pictureof the O’Donnell Hotel in Glenties, if possible. Allthe Best – Kathy

Hello Frank! My name is Patricia and I believe I am your second cousin once removed. That is Mary Carr and Michael O’Donnell were the parents of my great-grandmother Mary O’Donnell Hudson. My great uncle Walter (Mary O’Donnell Hudson’s son) was the keeper of the family history in our family and shared much of it with me. Some of the stories he told me were about my great-grandmother’s brother Pat, his favorite uncle who came to the states (Philadelphia) in his teens and eventually worked for the Baldwin Locomotive plant where he swung a sledgehammer on the locomotive’s boiler. I’ve lost track, but the last I knew my great-grandmother’s (Mary O’Donnell Hudson) sister Bridget lived on the farm in Glenties with her daughter (maybe Annie?) and the daughter’s family. One of my second cousins visited them 10 or 15 years ago. I have more information if you are interested. I have been to Ireland numerous times, but have not visited Donegal. I will be going again in July (2009) and hope to make it up there this trip. This site came up as I was browsing through Glenties online. I do not see dates so your search could have been long ago. Would appreciated hearing from you, Frank.

Mary O’Donnell and Elizabeth Lawlor – you are indeed cousins, although I’m sure this is old news to Elizabeth given the link her sister Patricia has made with my sister Moira over recent years. Mary, I assume that your dad was Brendan. I think you came to see us in Wolverhampton in the 1960’s. There are a whole bunch of O’Donnelis for you to learn about, all descended from our grandad Jim, the engine driver. FYI, there are a couple of photos of him at work – they are in the museum in Glenties. Please keep in touch. Regards, Kev (Mick’s eldest son)
