Glenties Notes 6th June 2012

Sympathy:
Sincere sympathy is extended to Anne Mc Cole, Glen Road, Glenties on the death of her sister, Mary Mc Ginty, who died recently in Dublin; also to Mary’s family and all the relatives and friends.

Wedding Bells:
Congratulations to Emma Herron, Ballyiriston, Portnoo and Karl Daly, Bundoran, who were married in Sooey, Co. Sligo on Friday 11th May 2012. Emma is a granddaughter of Mary Gallagher, Glen Road, Glenties.

Book Launch:
Liz Weir is launching a book compiled by the children of Scoil Mhuire, Glenties on Tuesday 12th June. The book is called “We are Writers”. For more information contact the School.

Cash 4 Clobber:
Scoil Mhuire is having another ‘Cash 4 Clobber’ collection on Wednesday 20th June. We accept bags of men’s, women’s & children’s clothing, paired shoes, handbags, belts, bed linen, (no duvets) curtains etc… We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support with our collections in the past and we look forward to another successful collection on the 20th.

Quiz:
There will be a Quiz in Scoil Mhuire, Glenties on Thursday 7th June commencing at 8.00 p.m. €20 for a team of 4 adults and €10 for a team of 4 children. All proceeds go towards school funds. Raffle and refreshments on the night.

The Late Fr. Connell J. Maguire:
The death took place in Florida on 12thApril 2012 of Fr. Connell J. Maguire aged 94. He was a U.S. Navy chaplain for 26 years. Fr. Maguire, son of Bernard and Catherine (Gallagher) Maguire was born at Mullantyboyle, Glenties. The family went to America when he was 11 years of age. They settled first in Mount Airy and then Chestnut Hill. He graduated from Holy Cross School, North – East Catholic High School and La Salle College before entering St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. He is survived by two brothers, Bernard and Daniel and two sisters, Teresa and Kathleen. He is a cousin of Rose Mc Gill, Glen Road, Glenties. Sincere sympathy is extended to her and to all his relatives and friends.

Bingo:
The winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 29th May were – Kathleen Griffin won € 300; Mary Duffy, Mamie Mc Geehin, Jackie Sweeney, Kathleen Mc Glynn, May Kennedy, Nancy Dorrian, Cathy Connell, and Cassie Long won € 100 each; Ms. Kelly, Fiona Gallagher, Laticha Doherty, Margaret Melly, Anthony Burke, Bruckless, Breege Gallagher, Anne Kennedy, Rose Mc Groarty, Frosses, Anthony Burke, Bruckless, Cassie Long, Fintown, Rose Mc Groarty, Nellie Doherty and Anthony Burke, Bruckless won € 50 each; Carmel Fitzgerald and Cassie Long, Fintown won €25 each.

Glenties Community Centre:
Bingo in the Glenties Community Centre every Tuesday night at 9 pm.; every line €50, every house €100; Snowball Jackpot €1600 on Tuesday 5th June on 45 numbers; if not won €300 will be paid out. In-house draws. Snooker every night from 6 pm except Tuesday.

Thanks:
Teachers Angela O’ Callaghan and Gerry Moore in the Comprehensive School would like to thank all the employers in our school catchment area who provided work experience to our students. Over the past year, students from the Transition Year Programme as well as students in LCVP and in the Leaving Cert Applied Programme have all gained really valuable experience of the world of work. In total 68 students were on work experience throughout the school year and we do appreciate all your support and feedback.

Relay for Life:
Thanks to all the people in the local area who supported our Transition Students in the Comprehensive School who recently completed a 24 hour relay in the sports grounds of LYIT. The students were an absolute credit to their families and their school and raised over € 2000 for cancer patient care. Thanks to teachers Mary Mc Laughlin, Mary Martin and Gerry Moore who stayed with the students for the 24 hour period. A special word of thanks to teacher Aileen Dowling, who also helped to organise this event and who is a cancer survivor herself.

Corpus Christi Procession:
The annual Corpus Christi Procession will take place after 11 a.m. Mass next Sunday 10th June. The people who are usually involved in the carrying of the canopy are asked to make themselves available, as well as those who usually steward the procession. The First Holy Communion Children are invited to walk in the Procession in their First Holy Communion Dress.

“Do This In Memory”:
The Parish based First Holy Communion Programme called “Do This In Memory” will conclude at 11 a.m. Mass on the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Feast of St. Anthony:
Mass will be celebrated in Rossnowlagh on Wednesday 13th June, which will include the Blessing of the Lilies. A bus will leave Mc Guinness’ Café at 6.00 p.m. Newcomers are very welcome.

St. Riaghan’s “Cash for Clobber”:
A Cash for Clobber collection will take place at St. Riaghan’s N. S. on Monday 18th June organised by the Green Team. The school will receive cash for all unwanted clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, bed linen and textiles. Empty bags can be collected from the school. Cash received will go toward school funds. Filled bags can be brought to the school on Friday 15th or on the morning of Monday 18th June. The collection is part of The Green School’s Initiative that is on going within the school and is an opportunity to dispose of unwanted goods in an environmentally friendly way. Thanks:
Naomh Conaill under 14 Girls would like to thank everyone for supporting their fundraising for the All Ireland Féile Trip. The amounts were – Cake Sale – € 550; Car Wash – € 518 and Family Fun Day / Novelty Football Game – € 1,105.

Annie Behan Memorial Walk / Run:
The Annie Behan Memorial Walk / Run in aid of the Donegal Hospice takes place on Saturday 16th June2012 at 11 a.m. Starting point is the Highlands Hotel, Glenties. Everyone is welcome.

Defibrillators:
Naomh Conaill GAA Club has 2 defibrillators, which the club is maintaining – replacing batteries and pads. One of these is in the hallway of the Clubhouse while the other one is in the Garda Station so that it can be accessed by the community at all times.

Community Employment Scheme:
General workers are wanted for Glenties Tidy Towns Community Employment Scheme. This scheme will start in Mid June. FÁS criteria apply. Contact 086 1209524.

Fundraising Dance:
A fundraising dance in aid of Naomh Conaill Ladies and Fintown Harps will take place in Halla Baile Na Finne, Fintown on Sunday 17th June. Music is by The Regulators. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and music will start at 9 p.m. Admission is € 10. Get your dancing shoes on and support two local clubs.
