Glenties Notes on February 7th 2001

The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Thursday 1st February 2001 of Jimmy Gallagher, Ardconnell, Glenties. His remains were brought to his home on Friday evening and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday morning. Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. assisted by Canon Leo Moore celebrated Requiem Mass. Burial took place afterwards in the New Cemetery. Jimmy’s wife Rosie, daughter, Mary and brother, Neil predeceased him. He is survived by two sons, Brendan and Patsy, two sisters, Mary and Annie, four brothers, John, Hughie, Pat and Connie, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Bried Roarty, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties on the death recently of her mother, Evelyn Connor, Belmullet, Co. Mayo.

Sincere sympathy is extended to James Melly, Strasallagh on the death of his brother, Eamonn, Letterkenny, (formerly Strasallagh, Glenties), which took place on Sunday last 4th February in Letterkenny Hospital.

The Playgroup would like to thank all the parents who supported them throughout the year; The Bank of Ireland who, again this year, sponsored our Christmas Party; all the local businesses who donated gifts for our Christmas Draw; Lakeview Guesthouse, Glenside Bacon Company, Spar, Glenties, Raudon Teo, Fintown and Frankie Shovlin, Building Contraactor, Portnoo.

The winners of the Draw are as follows; 1st Prize — Timothy Cape, 2nd Prize — Mary T. Byrne – Polar Fish, 3rd Prize — Fiona Gallagher and 4th Prize — Margaret Flannery.

Congratulations to Veronica and Christopher Laughlin, Lettermacaward on the birth recently of their first child, a baby girl. Veronica is a daughter of Leo and Annette Mc Loone, Main St. Glenties.

Congratulations to Molloy’s Bar, Glenties, who this year again are among the “Pubs of Distinction”.

Congratulations to Elaine Boyle, Derries, Glenties who recently graduated from University College, Dublin with and Honours degree in Business Studies. Elaine is a daughter of Packie and Maureen Boyle, Derries.

Congratulations to Martina Browne, who recently graduated from University College, Dublin with a BA Honours degree in English and History. Martina is a daughter of Francie and Mary Browne, Mill Road, Glenties.

Congratulations to Mary and Packie Gallagher, Straoughter, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently.

A full meeting of the Glenties Traders Association will take place at 9.00p.m. on Thursday 8th February in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties. Proposals for the 2001 programme will be accepted for discussion from the members.

A dance will be held in the Limelight, Glenties on Sunday next 11th February, as a tribute to the late Brendan Maxwell. Dancing is from 10pm. until 2am. and admission is by donation. Among the many local artists supplying the music are; Cufflinks, Shaun Mc Monagle, Country Tone, B & J Sound, Elaine Boyle and The Chancers.
