Glenties Notes on January 31st, 2002

The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Saturday 19th January 2002 of Mamie Sweeney, Gortnasillagh, Glenties. Her remains were brought home later that day and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Monday. Fr. Patrick Prendergast assisted by Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir and Fr. Neilie Boyle, Dungloe celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by Martina O’Donnell and Antoinette Sweeney. Tony O’Donnell, Amanda, Sean, and Cornelius Sweeney read Prayers of the Faithful. The Gifts were brought to the Altar by Liam and Amanda Sweeney, all grandchildren of Mamie’s. Music and singing was by the Loughlin family. Burial took place in the New Cemetery. Mamie is survived by sons, William and Jimmy, Gortnasillagh, Martin, Galway, daughter Mary K. O’Donnell, Dungloe, sister, Bridie Heron, Letterilly, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband, Cornelius predeceased Mamie and her grandson, Conor Sweeney died last November.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Anne Doherty, Mill Road, Glenties on the death of her mother, Sarah Mc Cole, Dungloe who died in Dungloe Hospital on Thursday 24th January 2002.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Margaret Quinn, Doonan Court, Donegal Town and formerly of Fintown and Meenmore, Dungloe, who died recently in Dublin.

Congratulations to John Francis and Patricia O’Donnell, Letterkenny on the birth of their second child, a baby brother for Dáire. John F. is a son of John and Aggie O’Donnell, Ard Patrick, Glenties and Patricia (nee Hanlon)is from Lettermacaward.

Congratulations to John A. Glynn who recently graduated from the University of Westminster with a Masters Degree in Clinical Chemistry. John is a son of Michael and Rosemary Glynn, Narin Road, and grandson of Maggie and the late Bill Glynn, Ard Patrick, Glenties and is currently working as a Senior Biomedical Scientist at Mayday Hospital, Croydon.

Congratulations to St. Columba’s Comprehensive School U/14 team who won the quarter-final of the Ulster Schools Competition last Wednesday. They beat Kilkeel, Co. Down at the Derrylaughlin GAA pitch at Washing Bay near Dungannon to secure their place in the semi-final.

Congratulations to Dave Mulhern, teacher at St. Columba’s Comprehensive School Glenties who was recently presented with the Handballer of theYear Award.

Congratulations to Sharon Foley, Lifford who recently won the Donegal Athlete of the Year Award at the Sport Star ceremony in the Silver Tassie, Letterkenny. Sharon is a daughter of Mary and Alan Foley, Lifford and granddaughter of the late Dinny and Ellie Doherty, Ard Patrick, Glenties.

Congratulations to Mary Mc Loone, Cleengort who added to her collection of medals when she won silver at the Scottish Senior Indoor Championships in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow.

Congratulations to Patsy Mc Gonagle who was selected as Donegal Person of the Year 2001. Patsy taught for some years in the Comprehensive School in Glenties.
