Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 21st June 2011

Our gallant Ulster Cup side turned around a tricky situation last Sunday when ending Gracehill’s hopes of progressing further in this year’s competition. Trailing six-one after the away leg, Sean and Cathal’s men knew that no there was no room for error and their charges responded magnificently, winning all seven matches to advance to the fourth round. This was one of the club’s best results of recent years and bodes well for the future. Congratulations lads!

Michael Nicholson enjoyed a whopping six shot victory in last Sunday’s D&D Insurance Open, racing around the links in just four over par gross. The Narin man’s nines were almost identical, with 22 points being recorded on the outward set and his tally improving by 23 on the return. Birdies at Loch Eala (2), Roaninish (11) and Sweeney’s Bank(14) illustrate his prowess on the day and the round will be one that he will look back on with fondness for many years to come. Michael Naughton won the battle of the cidevant school-masters, pipping Tom O’Donnell for second place with 39 points.

Paul McCloskey won last Wednesday’s Open with an excellent 42 points. His margin of four over visitor, Breda Giluarry was impressive and a portent of good scores to come.

We wish the Donegal Minor League team well in their next round which commences this week and hope that Narin and Portnoo’s senior team can round off an excellent performance thus far against Rosapenna in which they lead four-one from the away leg.

Mr. Brian McGonagle hosts his Captain’s Prize this weekend and one prays that the weather is kind to all concerned. The week’s events include the Mixed Foursomes, Ladies’ Day, Past Captains/Presidents and Captain’s Dinner. We wish Brian and his family a lovely and memorable week.
