Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 6th Spetember 2011

Over 50 golfers tee-up in the competition played on the Northern Bank Holiday and good scoring proved a handful for most. Michael Lovett and Cathal Donoghue bucked the trend, both returning scores of 36 points, only separated by Michael’s marginally better back nine. His 20 points going out included a lovely birdie at Aisling Uí Dhomhnaill (1st) and he held his score together on the way home for a well-merited victory. Cathal had three points to spare over Pat Glackin in third.

The Wednesday Open saw Barry Doherty ease to a three-point victory over his former school-master, Michael Naughton in second. The Narin man replicated the start made by Michael Lovett two days earlier with a three at the first and further birdies at Hemmersbach’s Gap (13th), Inis Caoil (15th) and The High Altar (16th) cemented a high-class finish and a deserved win.

Perhaps inspired by his protégé’s success the previous Wednesday, Maurice Crotty showed the younger crowd how to rip into a golf course in the Glenside Bacon stableford last Sunday, returning a huge 47 points. The Strabane golfer has been a serial winner in the club over the past forty years and the game is as sharp as ever as this score attests. Birdies and pars adorned his card with regularity, the former jewels festooning Lunula (6th), Dolmen (7th), Hemmersbach’s Gap (13th) and The High Altar (16th). Maurice had seven points to spare over John Ban Gallagher in second, a fabulous result and one which will surely feature prominently in the scrapbook.
