Glenties Notes 13th July 2011

The Late Harry Gillespie
The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Sunday 3rd July 2011 of Harry Gillespie, Mill Road, Glenties. His Remains were brought to his home later that day and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Tuesday morning. Fr. Pat Prendergast assisted by Fr. Des Sweeney concelebrated Requiem Mass. Family members did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by John F. and Pat O’ Donnell. Burial took place afterwards in the New Graveyard. Harry is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughters, Eithne, Fiona, Sharon and Loraine, son Henry, grandchildren, brother, Eamonn, son-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Two brothers, John and Benny predeceased him. Originally from Glencolmcille, Harry came to Glenties about 40 years ago and opened a Garage on Mill Road.

The winners at the Bingo on Tuesday 5th July in the Community Centre, Glenties were – Claire Keeney won the Jackpot of € 400. Marian Ward won € 150. Christopher O’ Donnell, Paula Hegarty, Bridie Boyle, Kathleen Mc Glynn, Rosaleen Melly, Cathy Connell, Brenda Reid and Bridie Doherty won € 100 each. Brown Kid won € 60. Kealin Mc Monagle, Fiona Gallagher, Hugh Gallagher, Alana Keeney, Christine Mc Cool, Tom Lavery, Rosbeg, Denise Campbell, Winnie Long, Carol Sweeney, Marie Cunningham and Kitty Mc Glynn won € 50 each. Nancy Shovlin and Josie Gallagher won € 25 each.

Donegal Hospice Church Gate Collection
The total amount raised at the recent Church Gate Collection in aid of Donegal Hospice was € 1,404.60. The amount collected in Edeninfagh was € 126.97 and the amount collected in Glenties was € 1, 277.63. Thank you to everyone involved.

Comprehensive School Reunion
A reunion will take place on 30th July for years 1969 – 1972 – starting with a Wine Reception in the School at 7 p.m. followed by a Buffet and Dance in the Highlands Hotel at 8.30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and it is very important that anyone interested in going from the Glenties / Fintown / Lettermacaward areas get in contact with any of the following – Bernie Keeney – 086 1640833, Mary Ita Boyle – 087 9038263 or Pauline Mc Gill – 087 3292428 as soon as possible.

Tidy Town Church Gate Collection
The Church Gate Collection in aid of the Tidy Town will be taken up next weekend. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Time Change – Graveyard Mass
The Annual Graveyard Mass will be celebrated in the New Graveyard at 2.00 p.m. next Sunday 17th July. It would be greatly appreciated if you could let your friends, relatives and former neighbours, who are travelling from outside the area, know that the time of the Mass has been brought forward to 2 p.m.

Biddy Devine Memorial Walk
The Annual Biddy Devine Memorial Walk in aid of The Kidney Dialysis Unit, Letterkenny Hospital takes place on Saturday 23rd July – departing from the Glen Tavern at 12 noon 20 km Walk. For more details contact Frankie – 9557978 or Mary – 9551170.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife, family, relatives and friends of Harry Gillespie, Mill Road, Glenties, who died in Letterkenny Hospital on Sunday last.

Time Change – Graveyard Mass
The Annual Graveyard Mass will be celebrated in the New Graveyard at 2.00 p.m. on Sunday 17th July.

Winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 28th June were – Annie Deane won the Jackpot of € 400. Helen Mc Dyre won € 150. Mary Mc Mahon, Kathleen Gallagher, Rosaleen Melly, Sally Mc Guigan, Ann Davison, Maura Kilbane, Mary Gallagher, Leitir and Nellie Mc Geehan won € 100 each. Sean Mc Cole won € 60. Teresa Mc Kelvey, Patrick Mc Hugh, Annie Boyle, Kathleen Gallagher, Mary Mc Dermott, Mary Gallagher and Mary Gallagher won € 50 each. Mary Kennedy, Suzanne Mulhern, Christopher O’ Donnell, Norah Gallagher, May Mc Gowan, Eileen Gallagher, and Fiona Gallagher won € 25 each. Jean Boyle, Emma Sweeney and Liz Buckley won € 20 each.

The recent Church Gate Collection for Care of the Aged amounted to € 165 in Edeninfagh and € 857 in Glenties. The committee wishes to thank everyone who donated so generously.

The Glenties Firemen would like to thank everyone who supported the recent retirement dance for Joe Craig and also the former Ladies Darts Team who kindly made a donation. € 1,052 was collected for Donegal Hospice.

Glenties Playgroup / Afterschool Summer Programme
Book now for July if you want to enrol your child for the Summer Programme of Activities. Children aged 3 -12 years are looked after in a safe and secure environment by trained childcare staff who have a current First Aid Certificate and are Garda vetted. We are open to all children in the Glenties and surrounding areas, including children visiting our area. The cost is € 3 per hour and € 2.50 for any subsequent family member. If your child is attending a minimum of two hours per day and is attending 5 sessions per week one session will be free. Hours are – Pre School – 9.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. Afterschool – 1.30 p.m. – 5.00p.m. Drop in or mixed age groups is also available during both sessions. Please send a pre-packed lunch in with your child. 11th July – 15th July – 9.30a.m. – 12.30 p.m. – Drama, Mini Beast Art and Craft Activities, Cooking. 1.30 – 3.30 p.m. Cooking, Drama, Tie-Dye T-Shirt Printing. Glenties Notes 1st June 2011

The Late Sarah Quinn
The death took place at her home on Tuesday May 17th of Sarah Quinn, Mully, Glenties. Her Remains were brought to The Church of The Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Thursday. Frs. Denis Quinn, Shane Gallagher, Pádraig O’ Bhaoill and Francis Mc Loone concelebrated Requiem Mass. Family members did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Gifts to the Altar. Burial took place in the local graveyard. Sarah is survived by two sons, John and Hughie, three daughters, Bridgeen, Marion and Bernadette, sisters, Mamie, Maggie, Susan, Gracie, Rosie, Eileen and Kitty, brothers, John and Paddy, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband Cormac died in September 2003. Two sisters, Bridget and Annie and two brothers, Pete and Barney also predeceased her.

Congratulations to Naomh Conaill U/16 team who beat Naomh Colmcille in the Division 2 League Final in Letterkenny last week.

Cake Sale
There will be a Cake Sale in the Community Centre, Glenties on Saturday evening after Mass in aid of Glenties Theatre Workshop.

X – Factor
The total amount collected in this year’s X- Factor night which was held in Paddy’s Bar, Glenties was € 3,611.02. The local Mountain Rescue Service and the Playschool each received € 600 and The Donegal Hospice received € 2,411.02. A special word of thanks to everyone who helped in any way in making the night such a great success.

Glenties Theatre Workshop
Anyone interested in taking part or helping in our next production please contact 087 9704647 or check out our Face book page (Glenties Theatre Workshop) and post on it. Our next production will be Footloose and we will begin auditions in the coming weeks.

Graveyard Mass
Mass will be celebrated in the New Graveyard, Glenties on Sunday 17th July at 3.00 p.m. and in Edeninfagh Graveyard on Sunday 7th August at 3.00 p.m.

The Irish Cancer Society Church Gate Collection will take place next weekend 4th & 5th June.

Weight Watchers
Shape up for Summer by joining Weight Watchers for men and women every Thursday evening in the Community Centre, Glenties from 6 00 p.m. Tel. 087 6486047.

Fintown Festival
The Fintown Festival kicks off on Friday evening 3rd June with a football match in Páirc Acla at 7.30 p.m. between Highland Radio and Fintown Harps, in aid of Ionad Lae Cholmcille. The Official Opening is at 9.00 p.m. by Donegal Ladies All-Star, Yvonne Mc Monagle at the Railway Inn. On Saturday – Leisure Cycle at 1 p.m. – Barbecue at Teach Jimmy with Traditional Music at 8 p.m. and Oiche Airneail at 9 p.m. with Fergus Mc Gee and friends. Family Fun Day on Sunday at Fintown Industrial Estate with Marching Bands, Irish Dancing, Craft Display; also Fun Bus for children and face painting etc. and Vintage Tractor Run. Open Air Market with all stalls welcome. At 4 p.m. there is an Open air music session at Arás Shein Bhain with traditional musicians and singers. On Monday there will be Sports in Páirc Acla at 2 p.m. and at 10 p.m. the Lord Mayor Crowning Dance will take place in Noble Bar.

Feast of St. Anthony
Mass will be celebrated in Rossnowlagh on Tuesday 14th June. Blessing of the Lilies will take place. A bus will leave Mc Guinness’ Café at 6.00 p.m. Newcomers are welcome.
