Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 19th July 2011

Our club was deeply saddened this week to hear that Sean Houston, past Captain (2009), had passed away. Sean was an outstanding gentleman and a great ambassador for the club over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

Our open competition for the 12th July was won by Jim Harley, Strabane, with an excellent score of 40 points – it has not gone unnoticed that Jim has figured well in the prizes of late!

1. Jim Harley (10) 40pts 2. Stephen Cooper (13) 39pts 3. Barney Cunningham (24) 38pts bot

Our Wednesday Open was well supported with 135 in the field. Hughie Moore with two good birdies on the first and the treacherous 15th paved the way for a total of 40 points – yet another consistent performer – thankfully for club teams also!

A fantastic couple of days golf was had by all on the 8th/9th July at the annual Narin & Portnoo PGA Pro Am in association with the Harcourt Hotel, Dublin.  There was a great buzz about the club house as the tournament kicked off early on Friday morning.  With the skills of top Pros on view, including European Tour player Simon Thornton and Ryder Cup hero Philip Walton there was much good play to admire.Competition was intense with Peter Martin (Riverside Golf Academy) and Eamon Brady (Clontarf Golf Club) leading in the clubhouse shooting 68(-5) after day one. Indeed, with 11 of the 47 Pros breaking par on day one it ensured there would be much interest in day two.  In the end Mark O’Sullivan, (Ashbourne Golf Club) pipped one of the over night leaders Eamonn Brady (68,72 – 140) to the post shooting a fantastic 69 to add to his 70 for a total of 139,7 under par.

The team prize was won by Barrie Trainor (Pro) who was ably assisted by Des Turley and friends.

Finally, further congratulations to Sean Hanrahan and his Ulster Cup Team who defeated Warrenpoint on Sunday – it was a close match with a scare or two at the end! We wish them all the best in the last 8 of the competition – onwards and upwards!
