Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 16th May 2011
Frank McGinley’s Minor League team won two matches in their first leg encounter with Donegal in Murvagh but that doesn’t tell half the story! Pat Connaghan usually talks a good game and of late he has been backing it up with golf of the highest order. Pat is the protégé of touring PGA professional, Derek Morrison and the erudite Killybegs resident was paired with Kevin McCready in Murvagh. They were three up in their match when Kevin tore something in his leg at the fifth. Pat was on his own now, but he faced similar challenges on the football field in days gone by and once again, he dug deep to eke out a fantastic two and one victory over the home pairing. It’s the stuff of legend! Sean Callaghan and Frank McDaid won four and three to set up an exciting home second leg on May 29th. The three unlucky pairings were Paddy McDwyer and Tom Rawdon; Manus Boyle Snr. and Tom O’Keeffe and Anthony Harkin and Paddy B. Boyle.
Hughie Moy’s Pierce Purcell team which played in Enniskillen featured Seamus Ryan & John Quinn; Frankie Kennedy & Adrian Maguire; Alan Elliott & Michael Nicholson; Cathal Donaghue & Kieran Cunnea; Shane Whittington & Sean Whyte.
The club’s attempt to qualify in the Irish Mixed Foursomes failed valiantly at Dunfanaghy. Frankie Kennedy’s team finished fifth on 289, just three points off qualification. Gweedore (278.5), Rosapenna (280), North West (285) and Ballybofey and Stranorlar (286) went through. I hope to have the team in next week’s notes.
Sean Whyte won the recent Wednesday Open with 34 points on what was a difficult day for scoring. The 11-handicapper got off to a poor start but picked it up from the third and birdies at Downstrands (3) and Sweeney’s Bank (14) together with several key pars got him home by a single point from in-form Sean Hanrahan.
A presentation of prizes will take place this Saturday, May 21st at 9p.m. The podium prize-winners in all sponsored events from March 20th until May 8th should be collected by prize-winners or a delegated member. Any prizes not collected will revert back to the club.
