Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 19th April 2011

Our Gaeltacht team came close on Sunday last to capturing its first title since 1995, but in the end, home advantage proved the significant factor for Cruit Island as they won out with an average of 39.5. Narin and Portnoo had an average of 36.5, no mean feat on an away course. We send our congratulations to Cruit on a worthy success and hopefully, Narin and Portnoo can go one better in 2012. All the lads who played over the winter are to be commended, as indeed does the team captain, Michael Naughton.

Frankie Kennedy won last Wednesday’s Open by a whopping five points over his nearest rival. The 12 handicapper had 23 points on the front nine, a birdie on Dolmen (7) and six pars doing the damage. Another birdie on Sweeney’s Bank (14) helped limit the damage of a double bogey on Inis Caoil (15) and he returned in 20 points for 43 overall.

Myles Cunningham won the April Medal with a great round of 69 on Sunday. His opening score was inauspicious, a double bogey darkening the mood just a tad on a lovely day. From then on, however, it was plain sailing, with five pars and two birdies on Carraig Fada (10) and O’Boyle Fort (18) recorded on the card. He had two shots to spare over Competitions Convenor, Alan Elliott in second.

The entry sheet for the Dr. McCloskey Singles Matchplay is up and members have until May 1st to enter this long-running competition. The entry fee is 6 euro.

The professionals are running a junior golf camp on the 26th and 27th of April. If previous years are anything to go by, it should be a big success! The course includes a carefully structured programme of events, fun competitions and games. The cost is 50 euro per child, which includes lunch each day a complimentary academy shirt.
