Glenties Notes 17th May 2013

Confirmation:
Congratulations to the twenty nine boys and girls who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday last in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties.

First Holy Communion:
First Holy Communion for the children of St. Riaghan’s Drimnacrosh, Kilkenny N.S. and Scoil Mhuire will take place in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday 25th May. First Holy Communion for the children of Edeninfagh N.S. will take place at 12 mid-day on Sunday 26th May.

New Arrivals:
Congratulations to Carina and Austin Mahony, Buncrubog, Glenties on the birth recently of their third child, a baby sister (Kayleigh) for Jake and Cara.

Congratulations to Mary Lou and Michael Furey, Strasallagh, Glenties on the birth of their second child, a baby brother for Katie.

U / 15 Winners:
Congratulations to our U / 15team who defeated Gweedore in a very close County Gaeltacht Final in Glencolmcille on Monday 6th May.

The Late Francie Breslin:
The death took place at his home on Saturday 6th April 2013 of Francie Breslin, Kilraine, Glenties. His Remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Monday.8th. Fr. Pat Prendergast celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by two of his sons. Burial took place in Kilraine Graveyard. He is survived by his wife Mary, four sons, James, John, Frank and Thomas, two daughters, Anne and Mary, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Francie was ninety five years of age and was the last surviving member of the family of twelve, of James and Mary Anne Breslin, Kilraine. He worked for over fifty years in Campbell’s Factory.

The Late John Gallagher:
The death took place peacefully, at his home on Sunday 21st April 2013, of John Gallagher, Mullantyboyle, Glenties. Fr. Pat Prendergast assisted by Fr. Denis Quinn and Fr. Shane Gallagher concelebrated Requiem Mass. Family members did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music was by the St Connell’s Church Choir, of which John was a member. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. John is survived by his wife, Pauline, daughters Auveen, and Sinead, mother, Sarah, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His son Ryan predeceased him in 1994 when he was two years old. His father Josie and his brother Brendan, also predeceased him.

Cash for Clobber:
St. Riaghan’s N.S., Drimnacrosh ‘Cash for Clobber Collection’ will take place at the school on Tuesday 28th May; organised by the Green Team. The school will receive a cash donation for each well filled’ Cash for Clobber’ or bin liner size bag. Money collected will go towards school funds. Filled bags can be brought to the school on Monday 27th or early Tuesday morning. This collection is part of the Green School’s Initiative that is on-going within the school, and is an opportunity to get rid of unwanted clothes, shoes and textiles, in an environmentally friendly way. Naomh Conaill Club Notes 16th May 2013

There was no winner of last weeks lotto. The numbers drawn were 9,11,24 and 29. Two prizes of €50 went to Martin Mc Taggart Narin and Conor Melly Glenties. Next weeks jackpot is €2,100

The club is currently running a draw. 1st prize 2 All Ireland football tickets, overnight accomadation in the Hartcourt hotel and €500 spending money, 2nd prize 2 tickets for Donegal v Tyrone. Tickets are €3 or 2 for €5. Tickets are available from club members.

Donegal v Tyrone tickets: The allocation of tickets is being decided. People receiving tickets will be contacted by the club.

Club Donegal jackets are on sale in the Co-Op.

The U-14′s are away to Bundoran in the Championship tonight Wednesday at 7pm.

The thirds had a good victory over Mac Cumhaills at the weekend. Naomh Conaill 1-07 0-04 Mac Cumhaills. This Saturday they are away to St Eunans at 7.30pm.

Both the seniors and reserves were defeated by St Eunans on Sunday. In the reserve game it finished St Eunans 4-04 1-05 Naomh Conaill while in the seniors it ended St Eunans 1-10 0-07 Naomh Conaill. This Sunday both teams are home to St Michaels. The reserve game is at 1.30pm followed by the senior game at 3pm.

Donegal GAA supporters club are holding a discussion forum in An Grianan Theatre Letterkenny on Wednesday 22nd May at 8pm. Special guests on the night are Martin Mc Hugh, Anthony Molloy, John Lynch and Pat Mc Anneney. Compeer on the night will be Highland Radios own Charlie Collins, music entertainment will be provided by Pat Gallagher (Goats Don’t shave) Eddie Gallagher and David Craig. Admission is only €10. Naomh Conaill Club Notes 10th May 2013

The lotto numbers for last week were 1,9,22 and 29. Congratulations to Sally Mc Guigan Ard Connell Glenties who matched all four numbers to win the jackpot €6,400. Next weeks jackpot is €2,000.

The April draw in the 200 plus club took place at the community centre bingo on Tueday 30th April. 1st prize €500 Martin Shankey Smith Fintown. 5 prizes of €100 each Catherine Mc Ginty C/O Leo Mc Loone, Kevin Mc Hugh The Rock, Mary Kennedy Main Street, Paddy Boyle Stracastle and Dolores Mc Monagle Fintown.

The thirds got their season off to a winning start when they overcame Glenswilly 1-4 to 1-14. This Saturday they are home to Sean Mac Cumhaills at 7.30pm.

On Sunday 12th May both the reserves and seniors are away to St Eunans. Times TBC.

The club is having a sale on club jerseys. Kids jerseys are now reduced to €15 and adults €20. Club merchandise is available in The Co-Op.

Sympathy:
Sincere sympathy is extended to Patrick, Leo and Jamsie Byrne, Maas, Glenties on the death in England recently of their nephew, Kevin Byrne and his wife in a motorbike accident; also to all other relatives and friends. Kevin was a son of the late Michael Byrne.

Sincere sympathy is extended to May Kennedy, Kilraine on the death of her daughter Carmel Cawley, Ashbourne, Co. Meath, which took place on Friday 26th April 2013; also to Carmel’s brother, Joseph and family, Kilraine her sisters Marie, Celine and Margaret, her husband and family and all other relatives and friends.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Rose Mc Monagle (nee Doherty, Beaghmore, Fintown) who died in Maynooth and was buried in Fintown last week.

Parish Pastoral Councils – “Setting up a Parish Pastoral Council in Glenties”:
The Presentation which was due to take place this weekend has had to be postponed indefinitely, due to the illness of one of the presenters. We will rearrange the talk at a later date.

Official Opening of Playground:
The Glenties Community Playground will be officially opened by Fr. Pat Prendergast next Saturday 4th May at 2.30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

St. Riaghan’s National School Cake, Book and Bric-a –Brac Sale:
The Parents Association at St. Riaghan’s National School will hold a combined Cake, Book and Bric-a-Brac Sale to raise funds for the school, in the Community Centre, on Saturday 4th May from 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Please come along to nab a tasty bake, a thumping good read or something completely unexpected… Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Fundraising Family Fun Day:
Relay for Life – Team Smiles and miles are hosting a Fundraising Family Fun Day and BBQ in Ard Patrick on Sunday 5th May at 4.30 p.m. An Evening the whole family can enjoy, with Bouncy Castles, Face Painting, Live Music and Prizes. All donations welcome; all proceeds in aid of the Irish Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Donegal.

Fintown Festival:
The Fintown Festival takes place from Friday 31st May until Monday 3rd June. Some of the main events are – Leisure Cycle in association with Tír Chonaill Gap C.C.; 5K Donegal Grand Prix Event – Walk / Jog / Run; Vintage Tractor Run by Mid-West Vintage Club; Fire Works Display on the Banks of Lough Finn; Hills and Glen Honda Run.

Mass in Rossnowlagh:
A bus will leave Mc Guinness’ Café at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday 7th May and every first Tuesday for Mass in Rossnowlagh. The organisers wish to make an appeal for more people to join them.

The U14′s had a comprehensive victory over St Nauls in the league on Thursday night. Naomh Conaill 9-11 3-08 St Nauls. They continued their winning ways in the Championship on Monday night when they overcame Four Masters. Naomh Conaill 8-07 2-07 Four Masters. They are in championship action again on Wednesday night when they are away to Bundoran at 7.30pm.

The U15′s are through to the gaeltacht final after they overcame Glenswilly in the semi final. Glenswilly 0-03 5-09 Naomh Conaill.They now play Gweedore at 12noon on Monday 6th May in Glen.

The thirds get their season underway this Saturday 4th May at 7.30pm when they travel to Glenswilly.

The reserves had a good victory over Kilcar on Sunday in the league. Naomh Conaill 1-11 1-04 Kilcar. This Sunday 5th May they are away to Ardara at 1.30pm. It finished all square in the senior game. Naomh Conaill 0-08 0-08 Kilcar.
Naomh Conaill Ladies had their church gate collection at the three churches in the parish on the weekend of the 13th/14th April. The total amount collected was €901.47. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

Sympathy:
John Gallagher, Mullantyboyle, Glenties died at his home, after a long illness, on Sunday 21st April 2013. Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Pauline, two daughters, Auveen and Sinead and all his relatives and friends.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Cleave Baskin, St. Conal’s Close, Glenties on the death of her mother, Mildred Baskin, Drimnacrosh, Glenties, who was buried in Ardara on Monday 15th April 2013; sympathy also to all other relatives and friends.

Altar Society Volunteers:

Parish Pastoral Councils:
Two ladies are coming from Donegal Town to talk at the Masses next weekend 27th / 28th April with a view to setting up a Parish Pastoral Council in Glenties.

Drama:
Inniskeel Drama Group is back on stage again for one night only in Glenties Community Centre on Saturday 27th April at 8.30 p.m. “Love Thy Neighbour’s a romantic family drama, (with a few twists in the “tale”). Proceeds are in aid of Glenties Day Care Centre and Alzheimer’s Society. Come along and enjoy a good laugh.

Charity Table Quiz:
A Table Quiz will take place in Melly’s Bar, Glenties, on Saturday 20th April at 9 p.m. Tír Chonaill Gap Cycling Club has 5 members participating in “Race the Rás” this year, cycling 1,200 kilometers in 8 days. This is in aid of National Breast Cancer Research Institute. Your support is welcome at their quiz night.

The U-14′s showed another great display of football last Tuesday when they overcame Naomh Mhuire 4-13 to 1-05. They continued there good form on Monday when they overcame Four Masters 0-10 to 7-11. Next Monday 22nd April sees the start of the U14 Championship Division 1 Group A. Naomh Conaill are away to Bundoran at 7.30pm

The minors had a great victory over St Johns at home on Friday night. Naomh Conaill 2-12 1-08 St Johns. On Monday night they continued there winning ways with a victory over Naomh Brid/Pettigo 4-10 to 3-05. Next Monday 22nd April they are away to Aodh Ruadh(Ballyshannon) at 7pm.

The reserves and seniors made the long trip to Malin last Sunday. The reserves had a comfortable win Malin 0-05 2-11 Naomh Conaill. The seniors were unlucky with Malin scoring a late goal to win by the narrowest of margins Malin 2-04 0-09 Naomh Conaill. This Friday 19th the seniors are home to Gweedore at 7pm.

Wedding Bells:
Congratulations to Derek Molloy, Mullanmore, and Aisling Gillespie, Kilcar who were married on Saturday last in Kilcar. Derek is a son of Gerry and Martina Molloy, Mullanmore, Glenties.

Sympathy:
Sincere sympathy is extended to Cathal Donaghue and family, Glenties on the death recently of Cathal’s mother, Kate Donaghue, Glencolmcille. Kate lived on Main Street Glenties for a number of years before moving to Donegal to live with her daughter.

Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife, Mary, family, relatives and friends of Francie Breslin, Kilraine, Glenties, who died on Saturday 6th April and was buried in Kilraine Graveyard on Monday.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family, all the relatives and friends of Sally Given, who died in London last week Sally was formerly Keeney from Tullyhoniver, Kilraine, Glenties and she was married to the late Tom Given from Main Street Glenties.

Glenties Community Centre:
Bingo every Tuesday night at 9 p.m. Every Line € 50, every House €100. Jackpot, if not won, it will be € 6,000 on Tuesday 16th April. If not won € 300 will be paid out. In-house draws.

Snooker:
Snooker Room opened from 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. daily except Tuesday. It closes at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. On Saturday and Sunday – Snooker Room opened from 12.noon to 10 p.m.
