A big thank you to all who supported our ‘Come Dine with me’ fundraiser. Most of our hosts held their dinner parties on St Patrick’s evening and then finished the night in Kennedys where a great night was had by all.  We held a very successful raffle for Paul Dawson’s MS Fundraising. Paul himself was on hand to pull out the winning tickets.  Many thanks to all who sponsored prizes on the night namely, Terence in the Blue Haven, Rosaleen and Conal in Lisdanar B&B, Sean and Geraldine in Donegal Waste, Glenties Furnishings and of course Paul Dawson himself who kindly donated a gallon of grouse. Kieran Kennedy also sponsored a super prize of an overnight hotel break for two which was specifically set aside for one of the hosts. Bernie O’Malley and Pauline Gallagher were the lucky winners. Sean McLoone, your local coal-man, kindly sponsored wine for each of the hosts to which we are very grateful. Last but not least a huge thank you goes out all of our hosts. All of our hosts admitted it was hard work but totally enjoyed the evening so well done to you all. We still have some dinner parties organised in the coming weeks as this weekend didn’t suit everyone so hopefully all goes well for them and don’t forget to forward your pictures to the Club Facebook page.

Death of Rev Fr Pat Prendergast
It was with great sadness that the community of Glenties became aware of the untimely passing of Fr Pat Prendergast at St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin on Monday 6th March. Fr Pat came to Glenties as Parish Priest in 1999 and served us with dedication and generosity. Known for his kindness and also his great interest in the schools of the Parish, he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure to cross his path. May he rest in peace.

Sympathy
The sudden death took place recently of John O’Donnell, Cappry, Ballybofey. Originally from Aughla, Glenties, John is survived by his wife Sarah, daughter Annette Donaghey and three grandsons, Patrick, James and Daniel. He is also survived by brothers Jimmy and Willie and sisters Bridie, Annie and Rosie. John worked in St Joseph’s Hospital, Stranorlar for 27 years and made many friends throughout the years which was evident in the large attendance at his wake and funeral. He was laid to rest in Drumboe Cemetary following Requiem Mass which was con-celebrated by Fr John Joe Duffy and Fr Patsy Arkinson.

Sincere sympathy is also extended to the family of Pat McHugh, Narin Road, Glenties on his recent passing at Letterkenny University Hospital. Pat was laid to rest in the New Graveyard following Requiem Mass on Tuesday 7th March.

Glenties Community Development Group
We are pleased to announce that this year Glenties will be having a parade on St Patrick’s Day – with a twist!  The difference in this year’s parade is that it will take place at 12:01a.m.  Yes, that’s right folks – one minute past midnight which will make it the first parade in Ireland on St Patrick’s Day 2017.  The decision was made to hold the parade at this time as it was proving impossible to secure any marching bands at any other time during the day as they had already been snapped up by other established event holders throughout the county.  We have managed to secure 4 bands and they are delighted with the idea of a midnight parade.  We have a large amount of floats taking part which will all be illuminated together with the marching bands and fancy dress participants for greater effect and in addition we will be turning the town green for the night to create an amazing green extravaganza for everyone.  Your support in such events is always paramount, so get your thinking caps on (green ones preferred) and get involved in what promises to be a big bright green spectacle for all to enjoy!

Enterprise Towns

The Enterprise Town initiative seeks to work with local businesses to plan and deliver a range of activities that will support and generate business in the area. The initiative also involves the wider community and the schools to ensure everyone can get involved and be part of the positive experience that is an Enterprise Town.

Bank of Ireland wants to support the development of smaller communities at both business level and in the wider context, incorporating schools, sports, social and charitable associations. The Enterprise Town initiative has been developed to allow this to happen and, to date, has worked very well in delivering excellent, community led results across the country.

Oklahoma!
Excitement is building in Glenties as the dates draw near for the newly formed Glenties Musical Theatre production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s much loved Musical Oklahoma!

The curtain goes up on Thursday 23rd February at 8 o’clock in The Community Centre for the first performance with three more at 8 o’clock on 24th,25th and 26th. ‘Oklahoma’ is a show for all the family and tickets can be purchased in Glenties CO-OP or by phoning on 087 0990609.

Will Curly win the hand of Laurey or will surly Jud come between them? Will Ado Annie ever decide who she will marry, the hapless Will or the exotic but unreliable Ali Hakim? Will the Farmers and the Cowboys ever be friends? Book your tickets now and these questions will be answered.

We are thankful for any sponsorship received to date but would welcome further contributions as the expense in putting on a musical of any kind is considerable.
