Glenties Notes 17th May 2013

Confirmation:
Congratulations to the twenty nine boys and girls who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday last in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties.

First Holy Communion:
First Holy Communion for the children of St. Riaghan’s Drimnacrosh, Kilkenny N.S. and Scoil Mhuire will take place in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday 25th May. First Holy Communion for the children of Edeninfagh N.S. will take place at 12 mid-day on Sunday 26th May.

New Arrivals:
Congratulations to Carina and Austin Mahony, Buncrubog, Glenties on the birth recently of their third child, a baby sister (Kayleigh) for Jake and Cara.

Congratulations to Mary Lou and Michael Furey, Strasallagh, Glenties on the birth of their second child, a baby brother for Katie.

U / 15 Winners:
Congratulations to our U / 15team who defeated Gweedore in a very close County Gaeltacht Final in Glencolmcille on Monday 6th May.

The Late Francie Breslin:
The death took place at his home on Saturday 6th April 2013 of Francie Breslin, Kilraine, Glenties. His Remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Monday.8th. Fr. Pat Prendergast celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by two of his sons. Burial took place in Kilraine Graveyard. He is survived by his wife Mary, four sons, James, John, Frank and Thomas, two daughters, Anne and Mary, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Francie was ninety five years of age and was the last surviving member of the family of twelve, of James and Mary Anne Breslin, Kilraine. He worked for over fifty years in Campbell’s Factory.

The Late John Gallagher:
The death took place peacefully, at his home on Sunday 21st April 2013, of John Gallagher, Mullantyboyle, Glenties. Fr. Pat Prendergast assisted by Fr. Denis Quinn and Fr. Shane Gallagher concelebrated Requiem Mass. Family members did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music was by the St Connell’s Church Choir, of which John was a member. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. John is survived by his wife, Pauline, daughters Auveen, and Sinead, mother, Sarah, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His son Ryan predeceased him in 1994 when he was two years old. His father Josie and his brother Brendan, also predeceased him.

Cash for Clobber:
St. Riaghan’s N.S., Drimnacrosh ‘Cash for Clobber Collection’ will take place at the school on Tuesday 28th May; organised by the Green Team. The school will receive a cash donation for each well filled’ Cash for Clobber’ or bin liner size bag. Money collected will go towards school funds. Filled bags can be brought to the school on Monday 27th or early Tuesday morning. This collection is part of the Green School’s Initiative that is on-going within the school, and is an opportunity to get rid of unwanted clothes, shoes and textiles, in an environmentally friendly way. Sympathy:
Sincere sympathy is extended to Patrick, Leo and Jamsie Byrne, Maas, Glenties on the death in England recently of their nephew, Kevin Byrne and his wife in a motorbike accident; also to all other relatives and friends. Kevin was a son of the late Michael Byrne.

Sincere sympathy is extended to May Kennedy, Kilraine on the death of her daughter Carmel Cawley, Ashbourne, Co. Meath, which took place on Friday 26th April 2013; also to Carmel’s brother, Joseph and family, Kilraine her sisters Marie, Celine and Margaret, her husband and family and all other relatives and friends.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Rose Mc Monagle (nee Doherty, Beaghmore, Fintown) who died in Maynooth and was buried in Fintown last week.

The Presentation which was due to take place this weekend has had to be postponed indefinitely, due to the illness of one of the presenters. We will rearrange the talk at a later date.

Official Opening of Playground:
The Glenties Community Playground will be officially opened by Fr. Pat Prendergast next Saturday 4th May at 2.30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Fundraising Family Fun Day:
Relay for Life – Team Smiles and miles are hosting a Fundraising Family Fun Day and BBQ in Ard Patrick on Sunday 5th May at 4.30 p.m. An Evening the whole family can enjoy, with Bouncy Castles, Face Painting, Live Music and Prizes. All donations welcome; all proceeds in aid of the Irish Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Donegal.

Fintown Festival:
The Fintown Festival takes place from Friday 31st May until Monday 3rd June. Some of the main events are – Leisure Cycle in association with Tír Chonaill Gap C.C.; 5K Donegal Grand Prix Event – Walk / Jog / Run; Vintage Tractor Run by Mid-West Vintage Club; Fire Works Display on the Banks of Lough Finn; Hills and Glen Honda Run.

Mass in Rossnowlagh:
A bus will leave Mc Guinness’ Café at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday 7th May and every first Tuesday for Mass in Rossnowlagh. The organisers wish to make an appeal for more people to join them.

John Gallagher, Mullantyboyle, Glenties died at his home, after a long illness, on Sunday 21st April 2013. Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Pauline, two daughters, Auveen and Sinead and all his relatives and friends.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Cleave Baskin, St. Conal’s Close, Glenties on the death of her mother, Mildred Baskin, Drimnacrosh, Glenties, who was buried in Ardara on Monday 15th April 2013; sympathy also to all other relatives and friends.

Two ladies are coming from Donegal Town to talk at the Masses next weekend 27th / 28th April with a view to setting up a Parish Pastoral Council in Glenties.

Drama:
Inniskeel Drama Group is back on stage again for one night only in Glenties Community Centre on Saturday 27th April at 8.30 p.m. “Love Thy Neighbour’s a romantic family drama, (with a few twists in the “tale”). Proceeds are in aid of Glenties Day Care Centre and Alzheimer’s Society. Come along and enjoy a good laugh.

Congratulations to Derek Molloy, Mullanmore, and Aisling Gillespie, Kilcar who were married on Saturday last in Kilcar. Derek is a son of Gerry and Martina Molloy, Mullanmore, Glenties.

New Arrival:
Congratulations to Lorraine and Sean Mc Loone, Straboy, Glenties on the birth of their second child, a baby sister for Sean Óg.

Sympathy:
Sincere sympathy is extended to Cathal Donaghue and family, Glenties on the death recently of Cathal’s mother, Kate Donaghue, Glencolmcille. Kate lived on Main Street Glenties for a number of years before moving to Donegal to live with her daughter.

Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife, Mary, family, relatives and friends of Francie Breslin, Kilraine, Glenties, who died on Saturday 6th April and was buried in Kilraine Graveyard on Monday.

The Late Mary Teresa Boyle:
After a long illness, the death took place in Sligo Hospital, on Tuesday 19th March 2013, of Mary Teresa Boyle, Glen Road, Glenties. Her Remains were brought to her home on Wednesday evening and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday morning. Fr. Pat Prendergast celebrated Mass at 11a.m. Her brother Pat and his wife Jenifer did the Readings. Music and singing was by John F. O’Donnell, Anne Bonner and Christine Mc Cool. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Mary Teresa, daughter of Mary and the late Eugene Boyle, Glen Road is survived by her mother Mary, sister, Kathleen, brother, Patrick and his wife Jenifer, niece, Roisin, nephew Owen, aunt, Bridie O’Shea, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Sympathy:
Sincere sympathy is extended to the wife and family, parents, relatives and friends of Andy Chan, Main Street, Glenties, who died unexpectedly, on Thursday 21st March 2013.

St. Connell’s Church, Glenties – Holy Week:
Holy Thursday – Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper – 7.30 p.m. This Mass will end with a Eucharistic Procession to the Altar of Repose and there will be Adoration until12.00 midnight. Everyone is encouraged to spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament on this special evening. (Please Note: there will be no Adoration during the day on Holy Thursday).

Trócaire:
Please change small coins into € 2 or € 1 coins or bank notes, and bring your Trócaire donation in the special Trócaire Envelope provided in your Sunday Envelope Box, dated for Holy Thursday.

Good Friday:
The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion – 3.00 p.m. Good Friday is a day of Fast and Abstinence. There will be a basket collection for the Holy Places in Jerusalem during this ceremony.

The Easter Vigil Mass – 9.00 p.m.
Candles will be provided for use during the Service of Light.

Tír Chonaill Gap Cycling Club are holding a Charity Cycle (30k & 60k) and 5K Run for Aware and Breast Cancer Research on Easter Monday at 10 a.m. from Glenties Comprehensive School. Registration at 9 a.m. at the school. Adults €10; U-18 € 5. All are welcome.

Mass in Rossnowlagh:
A bus will leave Mc Guinness’ Café at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday 2nd April and every first Tuesday for Mass in Rossnowlagh. The organisers wish to make an appeal for more people to join them.

Charity Walk:
Good Friday Charity Walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Day Centre, Glenties. Please meet at the Day Centre, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, on Good Friday – 29th March. The Walk will begin at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to take part.

The winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 12th March were – Grace O’Hara and Mary Gallagher won € 150 each; Isobel Mc Loone, Marian Mc Guinness, Margaret Gillespie, Maura Kilbane, Marian Ward, Bridie Boyle, Daithi Mc Gill. Glenties Community Centre:
Bingo in the Glenties Community Centre every Tuesday night. Every Line € 50, every House €100. Jackpot if not won on 19 / 03 / 2013 will be € 5600 on 45 numbers. Glenties Sewerage Scheme:
Cllr. Terence Slowey proposed the adoption of a report on the Glenties Sewerage Scheme at the February 20th meeting of Donegal County Council. The report was unanimously adopted. The report related to the Consultation Process laid down in the Planning & Development Regulations 2001 – 2012 with regard to the Part 8 permission for the Glenties Sewerage Scheme as follows: Amendments to means of access to approved access road to the approved pumping station and the removal of the existing treatment facility at the Clos Naomh Chonaill Housing Estate and its replacement with a new pumping station to be connected to the new public sewer.

Roads Programme for Glenties 2013

Cllr. Terence Slowey has been informed by the Roads Section of Donegal County Council that in 2013 upwards of 1 km of the Glenties/Ballybofey road will be upgraded from Fintown towards the Dry Arch at a cost of €81000.

Cllr. Slowey said he was very pleased that he had secured €80000 for the upgrading of the car park at the Narin Blue Flag beach. He went on to say that he had requested that a concrete plinth would be put in position for the bottle banks and possibly for the fixing of a bicycle rack to facilitate cyclists.

The Councillor said that €22,500 would be spent on the Glen road at a section known locally as the “Lab”, which is prone to flooding, and in addition that 1 km of the Meenavale road would be upgraded at a cost of €42,000.

Cllr. Slowey said that the road to Kilkenny school would be surface-dressed at a cost of €12,600, while 1 km of the Cleengort to Derryloaghan road would be surface-dressed at a cost of €12,600. He also said that 700 m of the Lacklea road in the Glen of Glenties would be re-surfaced at a cost of approximately €12,000.

Finally, according to Cllr. Slowey a small section of the Tullyard road, close to the bottom, which is in poor condition would get re-surfaced in 2013 at a cost of around €9,000.
