Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 23rd July 2009

Over 40 budding young stars enjoyed the July Golf Camp at Narin & Portnoo Golf Club hosted by PGA professionals, Connor Mallon and Daragh Lyons.

The Donegal Alzheimer Society fundraiser was a tremendous success with 6,884 euro raised to date from the collective effort. Great credit is due to Nan Quinn and John Quinn on their initiative and hard work. Mary Connaghan of the Donegal Alzheimer’s Society was on hand to congratulate the winners and to thank all those who participated. Marty McGing won the golf event with a great score of 42 points. The 17 handicapper had identical nines of 21 points, with five pars secured on the back nine. The raffle winners were Patrick Gallagher (All Stars signed shirt), Kieran Cunnea and Connor Mallon, who won a golf voucher for his own shop! The Dunmore Caravans Society handed over 560 euro to the fund, the proceeds of their competition last week and such a magnanimous gesture was much appreciated.

The club’s Minor League team won the first leg of the county semi-final on Sunday after a hard-fought match with Dudley Coyle’s Northwest. A three-two scoreline shows how tight the match lies and there’s all to play for in the return match scheduled for the coming weekend. We wish them well.

Wednesday’s competition saw Michael Doyle accumulate 41 points for a two shot win. His front nine of 22 points set up the big score and the 19 points coming home was achieved despite a blank on ten.

Sunday’s competition was sponsored by Patrick Johnny Sally’s Bar in Dungloe and 117 played despite the distractions on the telly. Joseph McLoone is the in-form player at present and he justified his favourite’s tag by engineering a fine score of 71. He secured a four over par gross total on the front nine and he held his game together on the tougher back nine to win by a shot.
