Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 27th April 2010
Entries are being taken for the annual two-day Pro-Am to be played on June 26th and 27th. The entry fee remains at 500 euro per team of three. Entries will be open to club members until April 30th and over 40 teams are in already.
The club’s Ulster Fourball team gave it their best shot but sadly came up just short in their second leg match against Portsalon. Three-two down from the first leg, Portsalon would have fancied their chances at home and despite a fine win from Pat Connaghan and Connell Gavigan and a half from Patsy Harkin and Hugh Francis Shovlin, it proved too high a mountain to climb. Kevin Gilgunn was a centimetre away from gaining a great half in his and Manus Boyle’s match but the napp won the battle. We wish Portsalon well and commiserate with our team members and captain.
James Keeney enjoyed a splendid round of 42 points last Wednesday which was just about enough to win the weekly mid-week competition. Out in a level twos 18 points, the Glenties native scorched through the back nine, recording birdies at 11 and 16 and pars at 12, 13, 15 and 17. But for the dubious pleasure of the presence of the P.R.O. on the 18th green, he would probably have parred it as well!
Sean Hanrahan finished runner-up to James Keeney on Wednesday and was there again on Sunday, winning his category with 37 points. The overall winner on the day was John Bán Gallagher, a man used to winning big competitions and taking full advantage of the benign conditions at present. His nines were fairly equal, with 21 coming on the front nine. Birdies were scarce, with just the solitary tweet on 14, but the 12 pars more than compensated. Cathal Donoghue returned to the podium in taking second and there’s surely more to come from this habitual winner. Our money man, John Malone, filled the final runner-up position and it’s good to see this hard-working officer focusing on his golf for a change!
New deadlines have been fixed for the Winter Matchplay closing stages and those still involved should ring the club for details. The entry sheets for the Spring Foursomes. Clements Mixed Foursomes and Dr. McCloskey Matchplay are posted in the clubhouse and players should enter soon.
