Narin & Portnoo Golf Notes 8th May 2009
Keltic Hygiene stableford winner, Harold Reid was recently presented with his prize by Narin & Portnoo Golf Club captain, Michael Glynn.
Former county player, John Bán Gallagher was the proud recipient (along with the absent Manus Boyle Jnr.) of the winners’ prize in the Kelly & Sons fourball competition at Narin & Portnoo Golf Club. He is pictured with the sartorially elegant club captain, Michael Glynn.
Entrants should note that the closing date for the first round of the three club matchplay competitions is Monday, May 11th.
The Pro-Am entry sheet is almost full and we can look forward to a successful event this June. If the weather obliges, one can expect very good scoring, especially with the calibre of professional expressing an interest in coming this year. Ryder Cup hero, Philip Walton will be back and eager go one better and wrest the title from two-time champion, Damien Mooney. My money is on home professional, Connor Mallon whose form of late has been superb.

Kevin Pattons charges tried gallantly but failed to qualify for the Jimmy Bruen matchplay stages at Castle Hume. The team consisted of: Don Earley and Cathal Donaghue; John Molloy and Conal Keeney; Noel Quinn and Frankie Kennedy; Kevin Patton and Finnian ODoherty; Eamon McGill and Kieran Gallagher.
The clubs Donegal Minor League team (over 18 handicap) under the stewardship of Patsy Harkin got their 2009 campaign off to a winning start last Sunday. Three and a half matches were won at home to Redcastle and with the club up in holes, the team will be confident of a positive result in the away leg. Winners on the day were the pairings of Frank McGinley and Paul McGinley, Paddy B. Boyle and Hugh Francis Shovlin and Patrick Gallagher and Connell Gavigan. Manus Boyle Snr. and Adrian Maguire won a hard-earned half in their tussle, while Patsy Harkin and Kevin McCready were bested in the final match.
The Murvagh posse moseyed up to Portnoo on Wednesday and duly walked off with the winners garland! Marty McGarrigle led this merry band and after a perfunctory 17 points out, he turned on the after-burners coming home, parring six holes despite playing in to the breeze. Veteran Ulster Cup star, Owen Boner blew the cobwebs off his own game to finish a fine second and hinted at what was to come on the Sunday! The Tullyillion resident was at it again in the Kelly Toyota monthly medal, beating par with a fine 72 in very trying conditions. He led for most of the day before first Dudley Coyle and then Denis Carbery lowered the winning score. The latter had the only 71 nett and I continue to be amazed at how he can play so well, so often and still seem so modest about it. Denis didnt suffer a single double-bogey in the tempest, grinding out nine pars and a birdie at eight. He proved once again that when the conditions get tough, the old mariners strength comes to the fore. Less of the old, I can hear him say!
Pierce Purcell qualifying takes place this Sunday at Narin, so the Ardara G.A.A. stableford competition (which had to be postponed in March) has been re-scheduled for Saturday instead. A greensomes event was organised by the club last week to facilitate visiting Pierce Purcell teams and it was won by the pairing of Sean and Marie Callaghan of Strabane with a 67.5. We wish everyone a good days golf on Sunday and pray that Seamus McDonaghs home team can make a rare appearance in the matchplay stages.
The Ulster Fourball team endured a scare against Strabane in the return match on Saturday before winning through by a hares breath. Bart made no change to the team which won three matches away from home and the troops rewarded him by resisting the backlash of a wounded away outfit. A good night was had by all afterwards and we wish our lads well in the next round.
