Glenties Notes on January 13th 2001

Congratulations to all the swimmers who took part in Narin / Portnoo New Year’s Day Swim in aid of Donegal Hospice. A special thanks to Paddy’s Bar Pool Team, Kevin O ‘Donnell, Columba O ‘Donnell, Dermot Hegarty and John Boyle who donated their prize money of £200 to the cause.

Congratulations to Paddy Joe and Peggy Molloy, Mully, Glenties who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently.

Congratulations to Michelle and Mathew Melly, Tullycleave, Ardara on the birth on Friday 29th December 2000 of their second child, a brother for Ryan. Mathew is a son of Tessie and the late Francie Melly, Glen Road, Glenties.

The Care of the Aged Committee wishes to thank everyone for their generous contributions to the recent Church Gate Collection, which amounted to £502.00. The Committee also wishes to take this opportunity to thank all those who gave Cash Donations and Spot Prizes for the Senior Citizens Party, all of which added so much to the enjoyment of the function. The Committee also offers sincere thanks to the Highlands Hotel.

Glenties Day Centre will re-open on Monday 15th January. If there are any new clients hoping to attend the Centre on a regular basis please contact the supervisor at 075-51326, or 075-51766, as soon as possible.

A Céilí Mór will be held in the Limelight, Glenties on Sunday 14th January. Music is by the Art Mc Nally Trio. Dancing from 9.30pm until 12.30am. and admission is £4.00 with supper.

An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny wishes to announce that performances of ‘Red Riding Hood’ will be given at 7.00pm. to-night Thursday 11th and Friday 12th January and on Saturday 13th January at 2.30pm. Box office number is 074 – 20777.

Barn Dancing Classes have resumed on Monday nights in the Highlands Hotel at 9.00pm.

The death took place on Friday 29th December 2000 of Kathleen Comerford, (nee Mc Nelis) Malahide, Dublin, and formerly of Glenties. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Sylvester’s Church, Malahide and burial took place in Malahide Cemetery. She is survived by her son, Joe, sisters, Nan Delaney, Majorca, Celine Mc Nelis, London, brother, Michael, grandchildren, daughter-in-law and other relatives and friends. Sincere sympathy is extended to her sister-in-law, Mary Mc Nelis, Castlegoland, Clooney, Portnoo and to all her relatives and friends. Her husband, Sandy, sister, Teresa and two brothers, Neil and Bernie predeceased her. Kathleen was a niece of the late Dr. Joe Mc Nelis who served the community in and around Glenties before Dr. Mc Closkey.

R.T.E.
A series of five programmes were filmed by R.T.E. last summer, featuring Irish Music, songs and dancing. Two of these programmes were filmed at the Glen Tavern,and include many of our local musicans, singers and dancers. This series will start Monday 15 th evening at 7.30pm on R.T.E.1.
