Glenties Notes on on May 5th 2005

The death took place after a brief illness, on Sunday 24th April 2005 of Elma Mc Dermott, (originally Cork) Celbridge, Co. Kildare. Her brother-in-law, Fr. Padraig Mc Dermott, Mississippi, assisted by Fr. Denis Quinn, P.P. Falcarragh, Fr. Francis Mc Loone, Adm. Letterkenny, Fr. Hurley, Rockwell College, (cousin of Elma’s), Fr. Martin Daly, Principal of C.U.S. College, Leeson Street, Dublin and Fr. Carmody P.P. Celbridge concelebrated Requiem Mass on Wednesday 27thApril and burial took place in Celbridge afterwards. Elma is survived by her husband, Gerry and only son, Trevor, brothers, Sean, Vincent, Tim and Finbar, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.Her husband Gerry is a son of the late Con and Fannie Mc Dermott, Edeninfagh, Glenties and the family were regular visitors to the area. Many relatives and neighbours from The Glen of Glenties travelled to Celbridge for the funeral.

The young people who received the Sacrament of Confirmation in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties, from Bishop Philip Boyce, on Sunday 24th April 2005 were as follows – Aoife Ward, (Gairm Scoil Chú Uladh), Christopher Simms, Michelle Quinn, Sarah Louise Mc Dyre, Kieran Mc Dyre and Joanne Boyle (Kilkenny N.S.), Shane Molloy, Gerard Molloy, Hughie Gallagher, Conor Ferguson and Danielle Byrne (St. Riaghan’s N.S. Drimnacrosh), Andrew Scott, Lauren Perry, John O’ Malley, Ciara Molloy, Camilla Molloy, Gerard Melly, Moya Mannering, Shauna Mc Grath, Rose Gallagher, John Gallagher, Donal Corcoran, Darragh Byrne, Orla Breslin, Christine Breslin and Kevin Boyle (Scoil Mhuire, Glenties), Eamonn Ó Ceallaigh, Ciaran Ó Brionainn, Ronan Mac Daibhidh, Eamonn Mac Ceallabhuí and Jason Mac Ailín (Fintown N.S.), and Donal Mac Diarmada (Edeninfagh N.S.).

Local children will receive their First Holy Communion in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties next Saturday 7th May at 11.00a.m. Mass and children from Edeninfagh will receive their First Holy Communion in the Church of the Holy Family on Sunday 15th May.

The 11.00a.m. Mass in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties, next Sunday 8th May will be celebrated as the Inaugural Children’s Mass, for which the Children of the Parish will prepare the Liturgy.

Congratulations to Francie and Mary Breslin, Kilraine, Glenties who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last weekend.

Very many thanks to all those who helped with the Calcutta Project last weekend. Thanks to those who helped with the coffee morning, those who donated so generously both at the church door on Saturday night and privately. Thank you also to Fr. Pat and Fr. Nigel for their kind help. In all 2000 euro was raised over the weekend. This will be sufficient to enable Eleanor Cape from the town to spend the summer as a volunteer in Calcutta, as well as making a significant money contribution to the work of the Development Action Society in India, which aims to give poor children from the edge of Calcutta a start in education.

The council members of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association intend to have a Mass and Presentation of Pins during the month of May. Any member who feels they are eligible for a Gold, Silver, or Full Membership Pin can contact any member of the council before 10th May.

The annual Swimming Gala will take place this year on Saturday 14th May at 7.30p.m. in Letterkenny Swimming Pool. Names will be taken in the schools. This is a fun gala open to all children who have done some swimming throughout the year. Bus leaves Ardara Community Centre at 6.00p.m. and Glenties Comprehensive School at 6.15p.m. Cost per child will be 5.00E to be collected on the day. Looking forward to an enjoyable evening.

The Rural Resource Worker (Garvan Connolly) with DLDC will be available to provide information and advice on various agricultural schemes & social welfare entitlements for farming / fishing families. Garvan will also be available to provide information on other services provided by Donegal Local Development Company such as Enterprise Start Up, Community Development, the LEADER+ and National Rural Development Programmes, CLAR, Community Based Youth Initiative, Job Club, Job Initiative, Regional Employment Service &Rural Social Scheme.
