Glenties Notes on September 20th 2001

RECENT WEDDINGS
June Conefry and Hugo Kilroy were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday 1st September 2001. Fr. Patrick Prendergast officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. June is a daughter of Noel and Bridie Conefry, Mill Road, Glenties and Hugo is a son of Patrick and the late Josephine Gilroy, Letterkenny. Her father gave the bride away and her bridesmaids were Jane Canney and Noreen Robinson. Richard Campbell was bestman and Roland Wray was groomsman. Rosie and Katie Carr, nieces of the bride were flowergirls. Readings were by friends of the bride, Mary Breslin and Diane Boyle. The groom’s sisters, Jackie and Anne read Prayers of the Faithful. Bridie Conefry and Patrick Kilroy brought the Gifts to the Altar. Joseph Mc Ginty, the bride’s cousin from Toronto read a reflection. The reception was held in The Lake House Hotel, Clooney, Portnoo, and the honeymoon was spent in Rome.

Danny Kennedy and Linda Mc Laughlin were married in St. Columba’s Church, Drumoghill, on Saturday 1st September 2001. Fr. Willie Mc Menamin officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Danny is a son of Sadie and the late Jimmy Kennedy, Maas, Glenties and Linda is a daughter of Dermot and Teresa Mc Laughlin, Manorcunningham. Her father gave the bride away and her sister Anne Mc Laughlin was her bridesmaid. Dave Roberts a friend of the groom was bestman. Aoife Mc Laughlin, cousin of the bride was flowergirl and Jamie Kennedy, nephew of the groom was pageboy. Readings were by Mary Kennedy and John Mc Laughlin, brother and sister of the bride and groom. Andrea Doherty and Danny Mc Elhinney read Prayers of the Faithful. Cousins of the bride, Ryan, Connor, Aoife and Emmet Mc Laughlin brought the Gifts to the Altar. The reception was held in Kee’s Hotel, Stranorlar and the honeymoon was spent in Cyprus.

Congratulations to Mary Mc Closkey, Glenties and Gerard Mc Nelis, Narin who were married in Glenties last Saturday.

Congratulations also to Caroline Doherty, The Rock, Glenties and Raymond Friel, Glenswilly, who were married in Ardara last Saturday. More details later.

Congratulations to Packie and Eileen Mc Cahill, Derries, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently.

Congratulations to Teresa and Tom Jordan, Dublin, on the birth of their second child on the 12th September 2001, a baby brother for Aoife. Teresa is a daughter of Jack and Nora O’ Donnell, Ard Patrick, Glenties.

Congratulations also to Angeline and John Ashworth, Dublin on the birth of their first child, a baby boy, on the 12th September 2001. Angeline is a daughter of Noel and Bridie Conefry, Mill Road, Glenties.

The Harvest Fair is over for another year. All day as usual, the street was thronged with people, young and old. There were stalls in abundance, from the Station Brae out to the Convent gate on the Mill Road. It rained heavy early in the morning but dried up before 10a.m. There were some light showers during the day and some heavier ones in the evening. On the whole, it wasn’t too bad.

RECENT DEATH
The death took place in Dungloe Hospital on Monday 10th September 2001 of Maura Mc Dyer, daughter of the late Patrick and Aggie Mc Dyer, Derries, Glenties. Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Tuesday evening. Fr. Patrick Prendergast celebrated Requiem Mass on Thursday morning. Burial took place in the New Cemetery. Brothers, Gerard, Derries, Conal, England, John, U.S.A., sisters, Annette, Derries, Bernadette, England, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended, survive Maura. Her brother, Packie who was in the U.S.A. predeceased her some years ago.

A Special Service was held in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties at 2p.m. on Friday 14th September ’01 for the victims and families of the American tragedy. A large number of people attended the Service.
