Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 24th November 2010

Paddy Boyle was the winner on a break-of-tie from Barney Cunningham with 34pts on Friday last in our local seniors society played over 16 holes. On the race for the Golfer of the Year, which will be decided on the best 4 cards, Barney Cunningham is on 25pts with Denis Carbery on 21 and Michael McGinley on 20. Our next outing is again this Friday 26th November with tee booked from 10 to 11a.m.

Our Wednesday and Sunday competitions were cancelled due to tempest and frost. Sunday’s turkey competition has been re-scheduled for this Saturday.

The North & West Coast Links Golf accepted the award for “European Golf Destination of the Year 2011” at The International Association of Golf Tour Operators annual Awards Ceremony in Valencia, Spain. Over 1,200 industry professionals from 60 countries attended the gala dinner to recognise and reward the exceptional contributions to the world of golf travel. Over 350 international golf tour operators from 52 countries across the world voted and initially selected 20 European golfing regions before whittling down the competition to just 6 finalists for the awards ceremony including Fife in Scotland (which includes the world famous Old Course at St. Andrews), the Czech Republic, Tenerife, Murcia in Spain and Lisbon in Portugal, along with North West Ireland.

Over the past few years the world’s most high profile destinations have won the coveted title, including Provence & Cote D’Azur, the Algarve, Andalucia, and Turkey.

North & West Coast Links Golf has grown from just 4 clubs to now being considered the premier golf marketing organisation in Ireland, through representation of 12 of the finest courses in Ireland, which include Ardglass Golf Club, Royal Portrush Golf Club, Portstewart Golf Club, Ballyliffin Golf Club, Portsalon Golf Club, Rosapenna Golf Links, Donegal Golf Club, Co. Sligo Golf Club, Enniscrone Golf Club, Carne Golf Links, Connemara Championship Links and of course, our own Narin & Portnoo Golf Club. So far this year, bookings have been up 40% for 2010 compared to 2009, ensuring a major golf tourism spend in this region.

Narin and Portnoo’s recent rise of 29 places in the Golf Digest Ireland rankings of Irish golf clubs has given us all further reason for good cheer as we approach the New Year and all associated with this progress are to be commended.
