Glenties Notes on August 3rd 2000

It is just over one month to the Glenties Harvest Fair Festival and Programmes of events are in circulation locally. An attractive variety of events have been organised by the committee for everyone’s enjoyment. No person / business or organisation has offered the committee a site for the Funfair, whose absence would be a great loss to the young children of the locality – it is still not too late to contact any committee member.

Donegal Parian china has agreed to present this years Harvest Queen with a beautiful inscribed Trophy. Sashes are presently being made for all the Festival Queen entrants and local businesses and organisations should contact Sharon Watters (075-51666) by Thursday August 10th at the latest so that sashes are prepared. There will be outside adjudicators this year.

Barn Dances started last Friday in the Community Centre and next outing will be Friday 4th August at 10.00p.m.

As the festival is only one month away all Businesses / Committees and Clubs should at this stage have ideas and man /womanpower organised for the Float Parade on Sunday 10th September.

We were blessed this year again with a beautiful day for our Mass in the graveyard and as usual we had a very large crowd. Mass was celebrated by our Parish Priest, Fr. Patrick Prendergast assisted by Fr. Denis Quinn, Fr. John Mc Loone and our Curate, Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir. The graves were blessed before Mass. There have been a lot of improvements made in the Graveyard over the last few years and it is looking really good now.

A Pilgrimage to Medjugorje will leave Knock Airport on Wednesday 18th October and return on Wednesday 25th. For bookings contact Nora Grimes tel. 072 -51275.

Congratulations to Bernie Joyce, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties and Ronan Molloy, Ardara who were married in Glenties on Saturday last.

Congratulations to the Mc Loone sisters, Mary and Eithne, daughters of Pat and Eithne Mc Loone, Cleengort, who continue to add to their collection of medals for their achievements in athletics. In the recent Track and Field Championships in Tullamore Mary won gold in the Long Jump and Triple Jump and another gold in the Ax400 metre relay. At under 23 women level Eithne won three medals for the High Jump, Triple Jump and Long Jump.
