Glenties Notes on July 26th 2000

There was a big crowd at the Gweebarra Bridge on Monday night to witness the switching on of the new lights on the Bridge by Minister for the Gaeltacht Eamón Ó Cuiv. It was a beautiful night and very talented local artists and the two local bands entertained the crowd before the Minister arrived. Chris Loughlin was M.C. His young daughter, Sara sang a song in Irish about the Gweebarra, composed by Doochary man the late Danny Mc Dermott who lived to be 105. On the platform were men who worked on the bridge when it was being built in the late forties and early fifties. Among them were Josie Mc Glinchey, Main Street, Glenties, John O’ Donnell, Ard Patrick, Glenties and James O’Donnell, Gortnasillagh.

Grainne and Michael Boyle were married on Saturday 15th July 2000 in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties. Fr. James Friel officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Grainne is a daughter of Dee and the late Neil Boyle, Ardconnell, Glenties and Michael is a son of Mick and Anne Boyle, Ard Patrick, Glenties. The bride’s uncle, Charlie Boyle, gave her away and her friend, Joanne Mc Loone was chief bridesmaid. Other bridesmaids were, Charlotte Dooley the bride’s cousin and Lisa Boyle the groom’s sister and another friend, Margaret Mc Gill. Gerard O’Donnell, a friend of the groom was bestman and the groomsmen were Kieran Gallagher and John Conlon, two other friends, and Grainne’s brother, Donal. Eimear Buchanan and Micheala Boyle were flowergirls and Rory Buchanan was pageboy. Readings were by Anne Buchanan sister of the groom and Declan Boyle, brother of the bride. Darren Molloy, Caroline Barrett, Alison Mc Dyer, Niamh Moody, and Veronica Loughlin read Prayers of the Faithful. Both mothers brought the Gifts to the Altar. Maria Molloy, a sister of the groom read a Reflection after Communion. The reception was held in the Highlands Hotel and the honeymoon was spent in Spain.

Mass will be celebrated next Sunday 30th July in the New Graveyard, Glenties at 3.00p.m.

Sunday 13th August is the date for the Graveyard Mass in Edeninfagh.

Masses will be celebrated in the Old Graveyard, Kilraine and Kilkenny Graveyards at a later date.
