Glenties Notes on December 13th 2001

The annual Senior Citizens Party last Friday night in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties was, as always, very successful and most enjoyable. To begin the evening Fr. Prendergast celebrated Mass at 6.00p.m. after which dinner was served. Santa and the Lord Mayor paid a visit again this year with a gift for everyone. The weather was perfect, the food was delicious and the music was great and it can safely be said that everyone had a great night. Thanks to all those who work so hard, not just on the night, but for weeks before, to make this annual event such a success.

The Lord Mayor, Thomas Mc Dyer switched on the Christmas Lights last Friday night and the town is much brighter now. Santa was there too with presents for all the children. He will be in town again next Sunday in the Highlands Hotel. ‘The Chancers’ supplied the music. We were blessed this year with a lovely dry night and there was a very big crowd. Our thanks are due to the Glenties Traders Association and all the workers who put up the lights.

The Crib has moved from the Community Centre to the centre of the town and has been erected by the Fire Brigade at the Bridge. It is hoped to have the Church Crib, which will be a new one, in place this weekend.

The death took place on Thursday 22nd November2001 in Southport, England of Bridie Pritchard, formerly Gallagher. She was 95 and was the youngest of the family of Charlie and Mary Gallagher, The Brook, Letterilly, Glenties. Her brothers, Charlie, Johnny, Joseph, Daniel, Brian, Philip, Edward, Robbie and Paddy, sisters, Annie, Mary, Margaret and Cassie predeceased her. Her remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Tuesday 4th December and her great grandnephew Fr. Adrian Gavigan celebrated Requiem Mass on Wednesday 5th. Burial took place in the New Cemetery with her brother Paddy. Sincere sympathy is extended to her niece, Rita Gallagher, grandnieces and nephews, Glen Road, Glenties, her nieces and nephews in other areas and all her relatives and friends.

Congratulations to Brian and Breid Mc Devitt, Ardconnell, Glenties, who celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary recently.
