Glenties Notes on January 1st 2004

The annual Senior Citizens Party, which was held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Friday 5thDecember was as always a very enjoyable occasion. Thanks to all who work so hard to make it such a success. Thanks to Fr. Prendergast who celebrated Mass and gave the Blessing of the Sick to all present. As usual the food was delicious, the music was great and all the guests got a gift from Santa who arrived with the Lord Mayor after the Christmas Lights were turned on outside.

Our thanks are due to the Glenties Traders Association and all the workers who put up the Christmas Lights and also to the Fire Brigade who erected the Crib at the Bridge. Thanks to the Lord Mayor, Thomas Mc Dyre who switched on the Lights and to Santa who gave gifts to the children and also to the musicians who entertained the crowd.

The death took place at his home on Sunday 14th December 2003 of Francie Houston, The Rock, Glenties. His remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Tuesday. Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties assisted by Fr. John Mc Loone P.P. Frosses, Fr. Joseph Briody, C.C. Creeslough, Fr. Adrian Gavigan Chaplin, Letterkenny Hospital, Fr.Vincent Lawless, Gurteen and Fr. Kieran Blake, Athenry celebrated Requiem Mass. Readings were by Francie’s son and daughter, Sean Houston and Rosaleen Devally. His grandchildren, Kevin Cunningham, Niamh Corduff, Olga Houston Waite, Ester Devally, Shaun Sutton and Alan Devally read Prayers of the Faithful. Music was by the Glenties choir accompanied by Sr. Immaculata on the organ. Soloists were Nora Gallagher and Margaret Flannagan. The instrumentalist was Matt Cunningham. Cuana Kerr played the tin whistle at the graveside. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Francie is survived by his wife, Josie, daughters, Mary Cunningham, Kathleen Corduff, Josephine Sutton, Rosaleen Devally and Brideen Keeney, sons, Sean and Francis, sister, Gracie Gildea, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Two sisters, Nan Brennan and Mary B. Houston and a baby son, Tom predeceased Francie.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Nan Gallagher on the death of her sister, Meg Cunningham, Letterkenny (nee Breslin, Ardara), which took place on Sunday 21st December 2003; also to Meg’s husband, family, relatives and friends.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Cormac Gallagher, Main St. Glenties on the death of his brother, which took place recently in America.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Garda Tommy Boyle on the death of his aunt, Bridget Byrne (nee Boyle, Loughfad), which took place on Sunday 21st December 2003, in Harbour Lights Nursing Home, Bruckless. Burial took place in Kilclooney Graveyard on Tuesday.

Congratulations to Breda Mc Nulty, who recently passed her final admitting examinations to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. Breda is the only daughter of Hughie and Anne Mc Nulty, Ardnableask, Donegal. Her mother was formerly Anne Boyle, The Cottages, Glen Road, Glenties
