Glenties Notes on March 8th 2000
On Friday 25th February 2000 work finally started on Glenties Street. It will probably be a while before we see an improvement on the surface as a lot of preparatory work, replacement of pipes etc. has to be done.
Congratulations to Peggy and Josie Byrne, Kilraine on the birth of their fifth child, a Leap Year Baby, born on 29th February 2000, a sister for Melissa, Jonathan, Darragh and Lucia.
Best wishes to John Roarty, son of Michael and Kitty, The Wood, Glenties and Paula Bonner, daughter of Cornelius and Bernadette, Glenties Road, Ardara, who got engaged recently. Cornelius is a native of Glenties.
Nora Breslin, Mullanmore, Cormac Quinn, Glen Tavern and Eoghan Ward, Edeninfagh were interviewed on Radio Na Gaeltachta on Sunday 5th March at 5.30pm. Dr. Mc Closkey and Vincent Campbell will be on next Sunday 12th at the same time. People from Ardara will be interviewed on the 19th and people from Doochary on 26th. The programmes were recorded during the ‘John Doherty Weekend’ in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties.
Denise Boyle, Highlands Hotel, Glenties, a talented young fiddle player has been invited to Europe to play with the renowned Carlos Nunez band of Spain. This band would be in the same category as ‘The Chieftans’ in this country so this is a great honour for Denise. Her Dad, Johnny has been in Holland exhibiting his paintings at a major arts exhibition of Dutch and Irish artists. He had a very successful one-man show in Germany in 1998.
Congratulations to Michael Gallagher, Curraghmone Ballybofey, who recently graduated from UCD with a 1.1 Master of Accounting Degree. He received his BA Degree from the University of Ulster, Jordanstown and is currently working with Price Waterhouse Coopers in Dublin. Michael’s mother, Mary is a daughter of the late John (Eamonn) and Bridie Boyle, Drimnasillagh, Glenties.
Rosie Quinn formerly of Mully, Glenties died quite suddenly in Limavady, Co. Derry on Friday 25th February 2000. Her remains were brought to her home in Mully later that day and were removed to the Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Saturday evening. Fr. Denis Quinn assisted by Fr Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass on Sunday. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Cemetery. One brother Cormac, Mully, three sisters, Maggie, Kitty and Eileen, survive Rosie. Four sisters, Annie, Hannah, Mary Bridget and Madge and a baby brother, Patrick predeceased her.
Danny O’Donnell Mullinamina, Glenties died in Dungloe Hospital on Wednesday 1st March 2000. He had been in poor health for some time. His remains were brought to his home on Thursday and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday. Danny’s nephew, Fr. Fergal Rooney (Peggy’s son) assisted by Fr. Prendergast P.P. and Fr. Ó Gallachóir C.C. celebrated Requiem Mass. Burial took place in the New Cemetery. Two sons, James, Letterkenny, Michael, Tipperary, two daughters, Marion Byrne, Sandfield, Ardara, Christina Brennan, Dublin, two sisters, Bella Mc Gill, Glenties, Peggy Rooney, Letterkenny, survive him. Danny’s wife, Annie, brothers, Joe, Jim and Hugh, sisters, Maryann, Bridget and Kate predeceased him.
